I have been snacking on fish products and eating fish as follows: snacks; cod livers in their own oil on a round of bread (amazon); pickled herring, anchovies. I eat wild salmon seared in a pan and cod I make in a court-bouillon or in a butter caper sauce in a pan. My omega quants have increased. Real food works better for this.

Pretty severe dry eye symptoms is something I at 75 of age only recently began to experience . . . for the last 3 months. And, I've had cataracts developing for about 2 years. I asked two experienced optometrists if there were any dietary or nutritional inputs which could ameliorate either of these two conditions, and both seemed surprised by the question; and both said no, and both recommended that aside from eventual surgery for the cataracts in the next 12 months or so, only eye drops and mild heat treatment would help . . . for the rest of my life.
This video is, pardon the phrase, a real eye opener. I'm especially interested in the Omegaquant test which I'll followup on. Thanks you, doctor for a well produced video. Very helpful.

I read something about Melatonin supplementation possibly being good against that quote: "This study showed that melatonin delayed cataract formation and progression in diabetic rat lenses. It may increase the levels of GSH, inhibit oxidative stress, diminish the activity of polyol pathway enzymes, and thus protect the lens transparency."
Your cells are capable of making it but you need to be exposed to the heat of the sun. There's also Astaxanthin which is a pigment extracted from seaweed. It's what gives lobster, salmon and flamingo their pink color. Astaxanthin has long been shown to defend aging eyes against the threat of cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, and glaucoma.
      Not medical advice.

The Omega-3 has been a huge help for me. I don't take the fancy stuff the doc talked about, just the Nature Made from the supermarket. I used to take the eye health formula that Thera-Tears makes, but TBH the supermarket stuff is works fine at a fraction of the price. It's great, if I don't forget to take it my eye will do really well... of course when my eyes do well enough for long enough I'm bound to start falling out of the habit in a somewhat unfortunate cycle, but as long as I resume as soon as I notice symptoms it's not terrible. I've never tested my omega levels though, I just know my eyes stop hurting.
It also helps to ensure that my hair and eyebrows are well trimmed (also checking the eyelashes is a good idea, although I rarely have a misaligned eyelash some people get them and need to pluck them) ... if I can pull any hair at any angle to reach my eyes, even if it looks fine in its normal resting position, there's probably a time when it is getting in my eyes and keeping it cut way back prevents that. A humidifier helps a little, eye drops and warm compresses provide temporary but welcome immediate relief.

To get the benefits of the Melatonin the Pineal gland produces before you sleep, make sure you are in darkness two hours before going to sleep. If you live in the city, block the neighbor's lights from the windows so that you will sleep in total darkness also try to go to sleep at the same time every day. Do not look at devices such as computers, cell phones or iPads two hours before going to sleep as it negatively affects the circadian cycle and may prevent the Melatonin release. The Melatonin produced by the pineal gland in the body before you go to sleep is something that helps you sleep but it's also a highly potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. It can help against arthritis and oxidative damage.
People who have jetlag from having flown to a different latitude sometimes take supplements of it before going to sleep to help set their body to the new time zone they are in.

The condition known as " dry eye" actually causes your eyes to be watery ( not dry) because the body is trying to keep the tissue hydrated with tears. Dry Eye isn't caused by lack of tears. It's due to the decrease in an oil- like substsnce that coats the tear- moistened eyeball to prevent the moisture from evaporating too rapidly.

Its easy to check by using iphone. use video on slow mo and just look into camera, if you noticing any flickers in screen or in lightning, you should replace lamps or change display. second check if you have astigmatism, if so I highly recommend to correct it up to 60-70 percents. Secondly I would recommend use weaker prescription for screen use. It helped me alot. But if you have astigmatism it should be corrected even in weaker prescription. Astigmatism is main reason of dry eyes for me. also no contacts like never.

I took fish oil supplements for about 2 years about 8 years ago. I think it was 1200mg - 360mg Omega-3 daily. My heart started missing beats not long after I started taking it, and slowly got worse, until it developed into arrhythmia. The arrhythmia kept getting worse, and got so bad I would almost pass out, because my heart would stop for 3-4 seconds sometimes. I never thought it could be anything to do with the fish oil, but I believe now it was. I had to finally get a heart ablation procedure about 7 years ago because the arrhythmia was killing me. My heart is functioning normal now, and the heart ablation really saved my life. I can't prove that fish oil caused my arrhythmia, but after doing a lot of searching on the internet I've found others with the same problem with fish oil, and even found a study from Sweden that mentioned some people getting heart arrhythmia from taking fish oil. I think this is very rare, and a very small percentage of people ever experience this problem with fish oil, but I'm telling people this in the event you start taking fish oil, and your heart starts to miss beats, stop taking it immediately. I've tried taking fish oil a couple of times after my heart ablation, as an experiment, and my heart would start missing beats in 2-3 days. Do a google search of "fish oil heart arrhythmia", you may be shocked, apparently it's a bigger problem then I thought. If fish oil bothers you drink 2 tablespoons of virgin olive oil a day.

I'm so glad your video showed up on my feed. I started taking Omega 3 oil tablets during COVID, for general health. About a year into it, I "discovered" I no longer needed reading glasses, which most people post 40 years old will need due to blurry reading. The only thing I changed in my diet and lifestyle once I got reading glasses, was fish oil tablets. Little to no change in anything else. When I went for my full eye exam, the doctor could not explain it, other than to say I still needed glasses to read (for distance, which I need anyway). I asked again: I no longer need reading glasses at all, in fact, I have to take them off to read. Crickets 😂 I also googled this phenomenon and no known cases, or discussions on this, were found. More crickets 😂 Amazing stuff! Thanks again!

Consistent results. No Omega 3s, trouble falling asleep. Lots of Omega 3s, fall asleep normally within 10 minutes vs my normal 30 minutes to one hour. My daily dosage is 1420 EPA & 960 DHA. Next order, I will likely increase to 3-4 total grams vs. my current 2.4 grams.

At 73 after cataract surgery, laser surgery implant of toric lens, great results for a couple of years, then vision and dry eye issues becoming serious enough to require prescription scleral contacts and dry enough to cause a couple of corneal abrasions overnight upon awakening. I tried warm compresses, Munro 5%, dry eye drops preservative free, scleral contacts and prism glasses to get 20/20 vision with minimal distortion. Eye doctor suggesting the oil gland procedures costing thousands without guaranteed results. I wanted to try Omega 3’s and I definitely got fantastic results after a couple of months of daily use of Omega 3 fish oil. It’s been about 4 months in, still doing very well.🤞

I take cod-liver oil every day and I swear it's an eye saver. I have been an insulin dependant diabetic for over 30 years, and I had started to show signs of early stage retinopathy in my scans around 4 years ago. After that, I started taking cod-liver oil every day, and within 2 years I had actually reversed the damage. My eye-doctor was very surprised. He said if he didn't personally know me, he would have assumed my scans from 4 years ago, compared to 2 years ago were from a different person. He said my current scans do not indicate that I am a diabetic at all. I can only put this down to the cod-liver oil which is very rich in omega 3 and also contains vitamin A and D. Nothing else changed during that period. The only thing with cod-liver oil is that you have to make sure you don't overdose on the vitamin A.

Hey Doc, I started being impacted by blepharitis. This went on for at least 1 year, until I went to an eye doctor and was prescribed warm compresses, pills, and ointments. Nothing worked even after sticking to the prescription for months. Then I started having daily intake of Omega-3 fatty acids. This was the cheapest brand of Omega-3 fatty acids on the shelf, nothing fancy. After a couple of months of taking Omega-3 fatty acids, my blepharitis went away. Now it's almost been 10 years, that I have been taking omega-3 fatty acids daily. I have not had any re-occurrence of blepharitis. I can tell you, that in my case at least, it cured me. This was purely thanks to the internet searches I did at the time. I am surprised that even today, 10 years later, the eye doctors have not come to a consensus that Omega-3 does wonders for the eye, and for the rest of the body for that matter. I can tell you that it worked in my case, and hope others read this, and it works for them too, just like it worked for you, and hopefully one day it will be part of the prescription, rather than the person needing to Google it for themselves.

My dog was diagnosed with cancer some years back and given 4 to 6 weeks. I supplemented him with salmon oil and a few other things and he lived another two years, these were two healthy, pain free years. Even the vet called him the miracle dog.
I did so much research on omegas and the effects they have.
I don’t have eye issues at all so can’t say much about that, but maybe I don’t have eye issues because I take omegas daily? Who knows. But I will always remember my wonderful dog and how I’m 100% positive they improved his symptoms and gave me more time with him.

Interesting study, which i can vouch for in real life. Briefly, i am a Type 1 diabetic for over 50 years, and have suffered from severe dry eye condition or over 25 years. Unfortunately, i also suffer from recurring eye erosions, which is linked to the dry eye condition. About 12 years ago, i started to take 'Omega 3 and collagen powder' supplements every evening, and it has changed my quality of life completely. My eye health improved over a period of 8 weeks, and the erosions reduced dramatically in that time period. These days i still follow the same regime, but have the collagen three times a week only. My eye erosion is now only occasional, and peaks when the pollen count is high. But after 12 years of use, i am happy with my eye health overall.

At the beginning, I did not feel a big difference after I took Omega 3, but I do feel my dry eye issue is lessor, but still dry. One time, I finished by Omega 3 and did not buy another bottle right away, so I stopped for like 2-3 weeks, then I realized that my dry eye issue was getting worse significantly. Then, I bought another bottle of Omega 3 and started to take it daily, my eyes feel a lot better. So, your suggestion to keep the Omega 3 within eyesight, is a good idea. I also suggest to keep extra bottle to avoid running out. Thanks again Doctor.

I noticed after about six or eight weeks on a plant based diet, alone, that my eyes were far less red, enough that I could stop eye drops altogether. I don't know if that's because I was getting so many nutrients IN every day, or that I was keeping the more inflammatory processed foods OUT everyday. I wish I would have supplemented with fish oil omega -3's at that time. I'll bet I would have seen much more improvement, because as you say, just healthy greens and whole foods don't supply enough Omega's to make much difference. I have good quality fish oil supplements on the shelf. I'm going to start my own 90 run and see how it goes. Thanks for the video, Doc.

Thanks for sharing this! I know many people who feel a more whole food plant based diet or even a more vegan diet is optimal for dry eye, some other eye docs I know feel that the Whole 30 diet also works (which I think is the main common denominator between them is whole, healthy food and not so much processed junk). Perhaps the vegan algae oil also may work but I have not tested it yet, and there are no studies specifically on dry eye with it (that I can find).

I just challenged my gf to a 90 fish oil challenge...just to see how things are affected by allowing a build up of those omega's in the body....not just on eyes, but possibly on her blood pressure and occasional bouts of depression. I was told to start getting Omega 3 supplements after having some heart trouble back in 2009.
    Those and multivitamins.
I had/have a pretty healthy and varied diet, excluding fish though, but they recommended that I get them nevertheless.
I shopped around to find how much DHA and EPA that various products contained.
Merely comparing oil weight per dose per unit cost doesn’t necessarily get one the best deal.
So now, since 2009, I’ve been taking 3 x 1000mg capsules per day; from Holland and Barrett here in Britain.
I asked the Doc how long the ‘repairs’ that they had made to my heart would be good for.
“Oh ! We’ve had patients go as long as 10 years without needing intervention …
That was 14 years ago !!!
    Fingers crossed eh ??
