At 5:55 when singing "But when you're blinded by your pain..." Whitney seems to have sung Mariah's part then they both looked at each other knowingly, Mariah switched to Whtney's part to balance the harmony....classic moment.
Yes! I always noticed that part but didn't realize that Whitney should have sung the higher harmony, but Mariah was quick to fix that for her friend!

@@bigboom3693 No Whitney was supposed to sing that part with Mariah. They sing it together on the recording too.
@@jobuck879 I don't think so. Whitney sang the higher harmony there in the record too. I think Whitney asked Mariah to switch parts in rehearsal (maybe because Whitney was a little hoarse that day) and when it was live on TV Mariah forgot for a minute and then jumped to the higher harmony.
@@bigboom3693 The original comment is that Whitney forgot and sung Mariah’s part and that’s not true. And Whitney didn’t sing the lower part just for the show, in the recording Whitney still sang the lower part.

Mariah is known for pretty much everything especially in her prime, not just for the whistle as you said, the whistle register is just one of the things she is unbeatable at just like agility, falsetto and transitions.

Mariah Carey’s VOCAL TRANSITIONS are incomparable, her adlibs and runs were so divine and on point she wasn’t just throwing random runs and her belts sounded like million dollars in a bag. Whitney started the song with a bang and mariah ended the song with that high falsetto in magic.
And I agree I love how whitney seemed secure with her talent, she’s so confident weather on a bad day or good day vocally. Mariah on the other hand knows what she’s singing, notes she’s hitting and she knows what melody fits the song literally a brilliant vocalist and musician/artist.

Always loved this performance, and your commentary, as usual, is spot on. Whitney was ALWAYS supportive of her duet partners. It also shows that her stage presence wasn’t just about what she was doing while singing, but also about what she was doing when she WASN’T singing…a mark of a true performer. She was charismatic and present at ALL times in her performances.

@@nm1raider758 That’s what makes her even greater. She sang with The Winans, CeCe Winan, Deborah Cox, Faith Evans, Kelly Price, Shirley Ceasar and Aretha Franklin. Whitney was secure in her abilities and talent without trying to upstage or one up the other artists. She was gracious and humble until you came for her. Whitney sang live with countless others like Natalie Cole, Dionne Warwick… Whitney was beyond great.

I can think of several performances off the top of my head were it looked like Whitney was having fun with the performers she was with at the time as well as with the audience! Another classic performance for me was when she sang "That's What Friends Are For"! In all honesty, it looked like they were all having fun (Dionne, Stevie, Luther& Whitney)The performance was phenomenal of course, the audience loved it and of course they gave them a well-deserved, standing ovation! In all honesty, as much as I enjoy this performance, it also makes me quite sad! Because I know that we probably won't see this level of talent on stage again for quite sometime!!!

You should react to more Mariah! I'd recommend You and I (a tribute to Stevie Wonder), where she really showcases her low notes. There's so many great ones- If It's Over (Live at the Grammies), Underneath the Stars (Tokyo Dome), Make It Happen (Madison Square Garden) and so many more. But I don't want to bombard you with listicles, even though I'd love to😅
