Whitney came in like Dinner. Mariah came in like dessert. Mariah looked at Whitney like "how you gon' block my powers like this". In the performance of this song on the Oprah show, it looks like Mariah was tryna snatch her hand away like 😬 "let my festive hand go, darling" and Whitney was like "Oh no lamb chop, not today". 😄 ruclips.net/video/J1OlwYJ364k/видео.htmlm56s
The part where Mariah looks at Whitney and stays silent on her part was ment like that. They did it on Oprah as well, It's like Mariah giving the mic to Whitney as she goes into that powerful "A small but stil resilient voice" and merch on the climax. I think it's a nice little sign of respect from Mariah giving credit to the master of all voices. Like she wrote in a memoir, something in the style of "I was interested in the music production and creation side, Whitney was a natural superstar born to sing"
i think he just went "oh" at that because the camera cut to mariah when she wasnt the one singing at that part, its always nippy doing the "RESILIENT VOOOICCEEEE" but them oscar editors (like most pro footage editors) aint never get the right shots for whatever reason
Besides the obvious quality of the vocals, there are so many golden moments in this song. I've always loved Mariah's very interesting harmony in the beginning of the bridge, starting out low and going up there the sentence after. Whitney's melisma like a machine gun, Mariah's like a river.
This is the kind of talent that we sadly don’t have nowadays. Amazing performance, and i’m sure to this day Mariah is grateful that she was able to perform this amazing song with Whitney
“On the evening before the broadcast, it was discovered, by Houston, that the arrangement wasn’t working, and the rehearsal ground to a halt. … With none of the musicians in the hall (including Bill Conti, the longtime conductor of Oscars ceremony) able to riddle out a solution, Houston identified the offending chords for the orchestra and created a new arrangement on the spot. The room watched her in awe.” Cinque Henderson - The New Yorker, January 27, 2016 The musical director had in mind for the two to sing the song differently from the recording. If someone has the source to help me prove this claim please feel free to post the link under this comment thread. Whitney showed up and couldn’t stay during the rehearsals. Mariah was present. During the bridge you see them singing the same line in the same key and pitch. 2:47 I always thought that was Whitney throwing shade for some reason lol. But no that was Nip signifying that she made an “oops” moment. And Mariah, who was at rehearsal, recognizes that as well hence her reaction to Whitney. Also Whitney naturally began to Adlib her performance and I don’t think it was her intention to outsang Mariah. She didn’t really align her voice with Mariah to harmonize the song how it originally intended to be done at least. So Mariah is following rehearsals, and Whitney who was either late or missed rehearsals, Whitney-fied the performance. They are both professionals who handled the performance very well, just a few hiccups came about because they’ve never really had the time to practice hence the inconsistency on Nips part to show up for rehearsals. I love them both! Thanks for sharing brother man.
JustTheVoice she’s like MJ man. Her musicality and her artistry were so great, she transcended the many limitations that could have made it virtually impossible for anyone to articulate a solution that made sense enough for respected musicians in the realm of classical music to translate and adhere to. Not even the conductor could do his job in that moment. In that instance she outclassed a conductor. That only goes to show how great Whitney was and is.
I read something about that too. At the Oscars they're supposed to sing the movie version, which was sung by Michelle Pfeiffer (who was in the movie) and someone else. It is different to the W/M version. That's likely what the musical director had prepped for. In the end they went for a hybrid. Also, a theory for the look Mariah thru: Whitney didn't sing "...clear through the rain", leaving Mariah unexpectedly on her own for that part. Whitney was likely gearing up for the next verse, the second part of which she needs to belt because it's designed for her to have on her own: "a small but still, RESILIENT VOICE..." and it's during "resilient voice" that Mariah gives the side eye slightly gritted smile lol
I think Mariah's smile there was because of the harmony part, she was surprised, I guess? She was supposed to be the higher harmony in that particular part, but whitney sang it, so she smiled and she did the lower harmony instead.
Mariah was PERFECT here, with all the runs/agility/head voice/belts/falsets… what a lot of people don't know, before criticizing, and was seen and spoken by so many, is that her microphone was actually lower than Whitney's! !! Finally: 2 icons that deserve all respect and recognition!!! ❤️❤️
@@TheeeDanielR Whitney is loud for the microphone, technically Whitney in this performance is not even singing, she simplified the arrangement and she is using her talk singing and sounds extremely loud because of her microphone, even too loud honestly, It's not pleasant at all to me, while Mariah performed the original arrangement which is more complex anyway even though her microphone is almost turned off. 99 was a good year for Whitney vocally, for Mariah was the worst of the 90s. Mariah did way better than Whitney at Oprah but I think that performance was better for Whitney too, closer to the arrangement of the studio for Whitney

@@lelelew2735 C'mon this is absolutely not true, the microphone was lower and Mariah was not a studio singer. She perform live the most complex and impressive vocals that I have ever seen in her prime. She's litterally the only live vocalist who can't be touched, just see the covers of her songs, her prime is just unmatched. Whitney is still my fave because thanks to her church experience was a more natural performer. This is Mariah's vocal decline, Whitney's voice was in great shape in 99, but anyway Mariah still followed the arrangement of the studio version while Whitney didn't, in this performance Whitney is more a studio singer than Mariah even if she's louder. In reality Mariah has always tried to sing her own songs following the same arrangement of the studio version in her prime while Whitney has always changed the arrangement in her career and often this made the song more interesting to listen to but also easier to sing. Hence the statement "Whitney never sings a song twice the same way" true but she never sings it like the studio version either. If this duet had come in the 2000s would you have called Whitney a studio singer because Mariah was in better shape vocally?
@@vocalslover2131 lol what are you talking about mariah is literally known as a studio singer because shes a perfectionist. Her whole sound is adding backing vocals and harmonizing with herself which you can only do in a studio. Whitney is a live singer because she did most of her stuff in one take and didnt need the extra art style to bring out her vocal ability. They are just different type of singers this doesnt mean mariah isnt talented. Also you just admitted whitney changed arrangements by ear in her live performances and switched it up but claim Mariah to be the best live vocalist. That is not true whitney was a better live performer as we see here and you cant claim whitneys voice was in better shape she wasnt in her prime Mariah is younger and should be in better shape than whitney vocally considering Whitney did drugs here and smoked cigs. This says alot because at mariahs age where was whitney vocally ?
Whitney came up with the arrangement for this performance, because the conductor couldn't figure out the chords. Whitney stepped in during rehearsal the night before and figured out the chords the conductor couldn't figure out. Whitney knew music and had a hell of an ear. My favorite part is Whitney's note on the drum beat that reverberates through the hall toward the end. She took over the performance. Love it.
Whitney made her own arrangements for every one of live performances, especially as years went on and her mental health was declining. It has been noted that live musicians would dread doing live performances with her, as she was extremely unpredictable - however that also displays great musicianship on their end to keep up with her melodies. For the purpose of a duet, I wish Whitney just stuck to the script here the same way Mariah did, that's my personal opinion. Still a beautiful and legendary performance.
I wish Mariah would have written another collab with them too…. Can u imagine how Mariah would have had both her and Whitney singing everybody in the industry under the table… she would have picked the perfect key and arranged it to where the peaks of their voice would have shown.
Whitney's power is out of this world! Honestly tho, Mariah's part is the hardest part of the song. I mean, try to watch some covers, only few slayed Mariah's part.
Insane - At the same oscars, just moments after this performance Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli sang The Prayer (which was my personal fav). You reacted to the Grammy performance, however the Oscar performance was my fav. Great night for music.
Wow! Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. Whitney's my all-time favorite and Mariah is a favorite. Mariah on that last part!?! I had to rewind that part like 4x. Those notes she was doing just before taking it higher and the vocals Whitney were doing simultaneously around her..just before the instruments stopped..ahh!. just mind blowing 🤯😍. You can't find enough adjectives to describe stuff like this...beautiful from beginning to end! Thanks for sharing!
The way Whitney enunciates. Absolutely beautiful! Great performance and both did an excellent job. However I think that look might have revealed what you mentioned earlier: Whitney for a split second sang Mariah’s note which through her off somewhat and what followed was that big climax and we all heard the voice there. But the contrast in styles is still beautiful to hear and watch.
I don't think you will ever get another female duet better than this. Their voices marry so well together and Mariah's head voice is absolutely heavenly while Whitney's tone has so much richness and warmth to it.
This duet was nothing short of magical. Whitney has often been credited for being the more powerful and dominant in this performance, but I feel they complimented each other perfectly. Mariah has always tended to sing like the recording. Whitney rarely does. That is a given. Whitney has and will always be my favourite singer of all time. Her innate gospel sound, her tone, her ability to imbue lyrics with so much feeling and most importantly the effortless way she sings is iconic. Love love love that women. But Mariah is a supreme talent. Vocally she is superb. But musically she is so talented. She writes and produces music. She is a master of her craft. The world has truly been blessed to have this witnessed this performance.......and finally how beautiful did they both look. With the utmost respect to Ms. Carey, Ms. Houston looked so incredibly chic and modelesque in this performance. I miss her terribly 😔
Omg I never saw this before!! Amazing holy shit, the combination whitney/Mariah is everything we need in music The runs, the rendition, the power. I really like how they harmonised there runs..what's happening?!
Mariah seemed a tad bit nervous. It also sounded like her mic was low. I actually prefer the Oprah performance over this one. They both shined in that one. My 2 favs😍
Love the reaction! I wish people would stop comparing these two legends and just appreciate the musical excellence and sheer talent which they both displayed during this magical duet. The Voice and The Songbird Supreme 👑
They’re my all-time favorites. I remember, in fifth grade, sitting in front of the computer and just playing Whitney’s songs non-stop. She was also the reason I got to know Mariah. I love and miss her.
People give Mariah a lot of slack on this performance and I just dont get it. She was giving transitions, runs ,head voice and belts! Her mic was definitely lowerd to harmonize better you can tell audibly that their mics dont have the same volume. (Especially with both their growls) She did amazing! Y'all know how nerves can get to her.. especially on a stage like the Oscars. And to add to that there were notable people bodyshaming her about her 'weight gain'. & label struggles. I wish people would look at things through an empathetic lens more often Whitneyyy slayyyed her part! Her voice is so dam strong!.
@@thecamil10 the Oprah performance was in a small studio with a small band and small choir. The Oscars is a bigger production with an orchestra and a loud ass choir. Mariah in all her 31 years of legend has never cut through an orchestra talkless of an orchestra abd a loud ass choir. I dare you to provide any proof of her dominating an orchestra with her power or volume? Whitney does this all the time in live performances abs actually drowns them out. Singing with an orchestra needs a separate technique . It is a Spinto technique and they use it to cut through . Mariah does not have this. She is lyric voice and light atimes. Her voice behaved exactly how it should behave next to a bigger voice . You guys are spreading lies.. Mariah herself would have addressed it if it was true like she addressed the Céline divas issue. Céline has a smaller instrument than Whitney and she was clearly still louder than Mariah.. Whitney did not need to belt to the rafters at Oprah to be heard. It was a band snd a small choir. Here it was needed, the bigger voice had to cut through the orchestration and the smaller blend in. It is just anatomy. Do t fight it
@@rosariodealmeida2328 How do you know that. The arrangement they Sang and rehearsed was put together by Whitney. If you have proof I dare you to provide it. Besides Mariah is a professional she should know how to adapt in the spot. Aretha/ Patti labelled and all the greats do not follow rehearsals to the T, the follow the outline and inject their soul in each performance on the spot. Sane as Whitney
I’m a Lamb but I realized Whitney was and still is the voice singing live. BuT in this song, it’s definitely Mariah’ish in the styling. And Mariah to me outdid Whitney except when it came to the bridge “A small but still Resilient Voice!!!” Who else could sing that but WHITNEY!!?!!??

The Voice is superb and I wouldn't want to try to sing with her on a gospel/inspirational song. That is her meat and potatoes. You better bring the squalling.
I've always watch your channel. I'm from the Philippines and we both love Mariah and Whitney because of their inspirational songs that inspire so many Filipino and every people in the whole world. 🥰🥰❤️❤️
I just wish they performed this song more times, their voices blend together seamlessly despite being completely different in texture. a historical event
Two of the most celebrated and loved iconic legendary DIVAS whitney and Mariah who performed together on one stage at the OSCAR....What a history in music it was. ( In the loving memory of the amazing Miss Houston)
This has never been one of my favorite songs from either of these legend’s catalog, but all these years later this is still a shining moment in pop culture history that has yet to be matched. You just really had to have lived the 90s to understand what an unbelievably huge deal this collaboration was.
Mariah Carey was definetly affected by nerves that night due to people commenting on her weight gain + she always hated award show performances. Their Oprah performance is where Mariahs voice shined the best and hit better notes and it was more resonant, prolly cuz her mic volume was different or she felt more comfortable since it’s not an award show. Regardless of that they both sounded amazing & they both had their moments in this performance and the Oprah one! Btw please react to Mariahs best performances: 1. If Its Over (Grammy Awards Performance): ruclips.net/video/tY0SMqLLEUc/видео.html 2. Vanishing (1993, Music Box Tour, NYC): ruclips.net/video/jRgII9akrm4/видео.html
Lmao I think Mariah gave Whitney a few "odd" looks because Whitney was changing the harmony up a little and she had to think fast to play along. Although I did notice a moment in the Oprah performance where it looked like Mariah snatched her hand back after they were holding for awhile so she could get back to her hand business xD Regardless, they sat next to each other during the rest of the ceremony!
mariah's voice was especially silky here, love that. also, as celebrated as this moment was back in the day, i think it's supremely underrated by the younger generations. i don't think people realize how legendary this duet was, most people who consider themselves vocalists now, 100% took some inspiration from one or the other (or both). they're both titans in very different ways, sadly mariah's nerves and stage fright never really allowed her to showcase her maximum potential on a live setting and this was no exception, so as much I love her I do think Whitney ate this performance up lol.
Just moments after this, Celine Dion performed The Prayer. Can you believe the vocal trinity performing on the same night on the same show... That's the closest we ever had to seeing the three petform together. Pls react to Celine's Oscar performance of The Prayer here too...
This performance is beyond anything else . Thanks for reacting to my Queen Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. They were amazing . Please react to this song at The Oprah's show.
You hit it on the head with their tones and textures....Mariah's voice is higher and lighter and so in that belting moment you are always gonna hear the lower voice. (Whitney) But it's like I don't know anyone 2 people that were absolutely perfectly chosen for this song. They both combined their superpowers beautifully.
Celine Dion won the Oscar for My Heart Will Go On year before....man this was my childhood. Miss this era with all my heart. I remember waiting ALL DAY for the Oprah show with Whitney and Mariah in my grandparents house. I was so excited. Thanks for taking me back
If you don't know it, you really have to watch jennifer hudson singing I will always love you in front of whitney, she was so damn impressed, standing and almost crying and everything.. its amazing!
Right. And When Whitney get in her A4- Eb5 portion of her register (in this era due to her darker tone especially) its over!!! This is Whitneys sweet spot in belting in late 90s!!
Whitney ate this performance up!!!! Sorry, Mariah fans hate this performance because Whitney swallowed Mariah up like Shark eating a goldfish! Says hope is very neeeeeeaaaaar seeeeeeee yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I tell ya it has been a blessing to have had these two Queens come our way. Thank you Lord! They both were brought up in the Lord in the church. Great Reaction. Thanks. 🙌😎👍
Why is the greatest live singer ever to me because the song usually given to her and with that gospel background sung the song how she feel, that’s why Whitney had like 5-6 version of one songs and you couldn’t get the full experience on a studio track with her simply with her voice being to big for the studio. On the other hand mariah to me is the greatest studio artist of all time because she usually wrote, produced and back her vocals. That’s why if you listen to Mariah live vocals(which are all time great as well) she didn’t really change keys and pretty much always sung out she wrote and sung the song in the studio. Not saying Mariah didn’t care about singing but she the artist more than Whitney and Whitney the Sanger more so than Mariah…both equally great
Wonderful reaction. Have you ever seen Kevin Costner's eulogy at Whitney's funeral. If you haven't, perhaps react to it. It is so beautiful. Can't believe they are about to remake The Bodyguard! It should be left untouched!
Whitney was not trying to harmonize at all😂 Mariah over there like: “Maam quit adlibbing all over the place” Whitney like: “You better keep up baby lol” But rt the performance actually still sounds good why Mariah mic sound lower she usually don’t sound that light especially when belting?
Whitney is THE VOICE for many reasons. She dominates live performances because of power, tone, charisma and agility. Mariah's element is the studio, that is where she thrives. Outside of Whitney, Mariah is my next best female vocalist. They are just everything to me.
She is definitely a Choleric Melancholic Personality, quite similar to Beyonce. It shows why a comment about her image affected her that much. It's her perfectionism especially in an outward expression.

Amazing holy shit, the combination whitney/Mariah is everything we need in music
The runs, the rendition, the power. I really like how they harmonised there runs..what's happening?!
I miss Whitney! These two vocal Gods inspired me to sing, along with Celine of course ❤️🙌🏼
Mariah seemed a tad bit nervous. It also sounded like her mic was low. I actually prefer the Oprah performance over this one. They both shined in that one. My 2 favs😍
The Oprah performance was Magical and the Holy Spirit came up in there too…. that’s why…
That's exactly what I said it seems like Mariah's mic was down and I think she did get a little nervous possibly even intimidated.
Two of the Most beautiful Vocal TONES in Music History period.
Love the reaction! I wish people would stop comparing these two legends and just appreciate the musical excellence and sheer talent which they both displayed during this magical duet. The Voice and The Songbird Supreme 👑
Oooohhhh Whitney, you're truly missed!!! 🙏💔🥺❤
finally!! this video has been removed from youtube for so long, i’m glad it’s up again!!
They’re my all-time favorites. I remember, in fifth grade, sitting in front of the computer and just playing Whitney’s songs non-stop. She was also the reason I got to know Mariah. I love and miss her.
This was so good, that run/riff of Whitney’s tone at 3:47 was everything. 😍
ikr!! I was like Whitney girrl, you better hit that low note!!!
People give Mariah a lot of slack on this performance and I just dont get it.
She was giving transitions, runs ,head voice and belts! Her mic was definitely lowerd to harmonize better you can tell audibly that their mics dont have the same volume. (Especially with both their growls)
She did amazing! Y'all know how nerves can get to her.. especially on a stage like the Oscars.
And to add to that there were notable people bodyshaming her about her 'weight gain'. & label struggles.
I wish people would look at things through an empathetic lens more often
Whitneyyy slayyyed her part! Her voice is so dam strong!.
I agree Mariah’s mic was lowered for sure. At Oprah that did not happen and you can her voice as loud as WH.
@@thecamil10 yea Mimi was belting some loud notes and it didn't seem to show on the mic. I think the main evidence was the growl sounding low.
Do t fight it
Whitney changed the performance last minute while Mariah was following what was rehearsed.
So Whitney CLOWNED TF up of Mariah.
To this day I still think Whitney slayed live and in the official video. I love Mariah Carey so much but on this song Whitney Houston shining.
We will never have another such duet...ever!!! 🥺😍🥰
Whitney houston ♥️ Nr 1 🎤🎤🦋
That night, Céline Dion and Andrea Bocelli also sang The Prayer. What a legendary night...
Two unparalleled legends, one we miss terribly, it's so beautiful to see these two masterful artists sharing this sublime duo.
Thank you for your analyzes, which are always fair and without bias.
👍😘🎶🎶🎶
Mariah is just so good for me. She looks like an angel, sings like one and is so inimitable, no one can really copy her or her tone.
The Voice is superb and I wouldn't want to try to sing with her on a gospel/inspirational song. That is her meat and potatoes. You better bring the squalling.
omgg my fav duetttt in the world
I've always watch your channel.
The Songbird SUPREME, don't forget SUPREME lol
So beautiful ❤️ Truth be told They sound excellent together!
One of the handful events that all 3 of the Vocal Trinity attended, and one of the even fewer that they all sang for.
Btw please react to Mariahs best performances:
1. If Its Over (Grammy Awards Performance): ruclips.net/video/tY0SMqLLEUc/видео.html
2. Vanishing (1993, Music Box Tour, NYC): ruclips.net/video/jRgII9akrm4/видео.html
two of the greatest singers that walked this earth
It’ll always give me chills. Probably the best duet ever recorded for real! Iconic. Whitney we miss you. And as Mariah would say, TRY IT ON ME!!!!! 🙏🏾
Wow! That was a moving performance! I’m shocked that I’ve never saw this version.
Beautiful duet by two of the best to hit a stage!!!
mariah's voice was especially silky here, love that. also, as celebrated as this moment was back in the day, i think it's supremely underrated by the younger generations. i don't think people realize how legendary this duet was, most people who consider themselves vocalists now, 100% took some inspiration from one or the other (or both). they're both titans in very different ways, sadly mariah's nerves and stage fright never really allowed her to showcase her maximum potential on a live setting and this was no exception, so as much I love her I do think Whitney ate this performance up lol.
This is my all time favorite song for many years.
The fact that this is the year both of them had vocally declined already makes it better💯
“I’m ready to block.” 😂😂
I can't with 2:50 😂 That's what I remembered from this performance. Hadn't seen it in years 😅
This video shows why they shouldn’t be compared to each other
I cry everytime. The magic created her will last forever.
He already did a few years ago.
They slayed
Legendary !!!
Whitney Houston
You hit it on the head with their tones and textures....Mariah's voice is higher and lighter and so in that belting moment you are always gonna hear the lower voice. (Whitney) But it's like I don't know anyone 2 people that were absolutely perfectly chosen for this song. They both combined their superpowers beautifully.
I’m here…. It’s been a while but I am here. Love your reactions man lol.
Yes that was the case, I feel like Mariahs mic was a bit lowered. They still both killed it ❤️
Celine Dion won the Oscar for My Heart Will Go On year before....man this was my childhood.
Epic!!!
I agree with everything you say
Cmon Whitney!
It's a gospel song, Whitney gotta show out💯
Right. And When Whitney get in her A4- Eb5 portion of her register (in this era due to her darker tone especially) its over!!! This is Whitneys sweet spot in belting in late 90s!!
LEGENDS only!!!! i miss whitney. love that they had this record together
You’re soo handsome 😍 and talented 👏🏽
Not saying Mariah didn’t care about singing but she the artist more than Whitney and Whitney the Sanger more so than Mariah…both equally great
Celine & Andrea Bocelli’s The Prayer is also a classic and couldn’t have lost the Oscar to a better song that night.
I love them both
Two legend
Perfectly said💯
I LOVE both of them-but something about Whitney’s late-90s agility, improv, and tone blows me out of this world. 🙌🏾
Unpopular opinion, I prefer her late 90s specifically 99 voice over her prime vocals
@@EthansTarot Same here! I can binge-watch/binge-listen any of her concerts from the My Love is Your Love tour.
Whitney was Prepared. She said this is Herstory aka Her Moment. She had Ginger Tea and Extra Ginger. Shoot.
Wonderful reaction. Have you ever seen Kevin Costner's eulogy at Whitney's funeral. If you haven't, perhaps react to it. It is so beautiful. Can't believe they are about to remake The Bodyguard! It should be left untouched!
PLEASE MY FRIEND!!! React to: “He, I Believe” by whitney Houston 1986
Whitney was not trying to harmonize at all😂 Mariah over there like: “Maam quit adlibbing all over the place”
Whitney like: “You better keep up baby lol”
But rt the performance actually still sounds good why Mariah mic sound lower she usually don’t sound that light especially when belting?
Iconic
Whitney is THE VOICE for many reasons. She dominates live performances because of power, tone, charisma and agility. Mariah's element is the studio, that is where she thrives. Outside of Whitney, Mariah is my next best female vocalist. They are just everything to me.
My 2 favourite singers of all time with cece winans! Sorry my 3 all time they just the best
Mariah was so nervous after Joan Rivers said people been saying Mariah gained weight 🥲
She is definitely a Choleric Melancholic Personality, quite similar to Beyonce. It shows why a comment about her image affected her that much. It's her perfectionism especially in an outward expression.
Were they saying that because of this performance?
@@justthevoice4529 not sure but i believe it was right before she went on
@@justthevoice4529 Here's a link to the interview ruclips.net/video/_sW4sa2f4wE/видео.html
It has stuck with her all the way till now. She recently mentioned how much it got to her 👀
@@justthevoice4529 no she said she was told that when she arrived. So before she performed during the red carpet
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE react to Girassol (R&B Version) by Priscilla Alcantara.
She is one of the best singers in Brazil. I really think you will love it!!
YES
