when Mariah debuted, the media and public always compared her to Whitney and made them as a 'rival' when they really never have a problem with each other... They never was a friend since Mariah debut in 1990 until 1998 but in 1998 they collabs and became friend and shut down the rivalry and rumor about them not liking each other and the song won an Oscar... and Mariah's speech about Whitney in 2012 was truly heartbreaking because she really love her friend Whitney... Whitney is a legend and The Voice...

Oh my god you have no idea. These two legends are the biggest female artists of the 90's and people often pit them against each other, creating a rivalry between them. When Mariah debuted in 1990, people tended to pit her against Whitney because of her powerhouse vocals that's on par with Miss Houston and to have this very historical moment to have them both on stage singing together is phenomenal to both fan bases. The rivalry between them disappeared and rumors dispersed. So when Oprah said "for the very first time" during the introduction, people really felt it that's why when Mariah came in, the audience really went wild. Two sensational songstress performing live in national television was really a history making. No one really saw this duet coming.
Also a fun fact about this performance, at 5:33, Whitney was supposed to sing the higher part and Mariah will sing the melody but look how quick Mariah's ears to notice that Whitney will be singing the melody and she switched to sing the higher part so they wouldn't ruin the harmonization. These little things really prove how musically inclined Mariah is and how pro her ears are.
Something that should be acknowledged is Sony/Columbia was in desperate need of a female pop singer to rival the likes of A&M’s Janet and Arista’s Whitney so that’s part of the narrative of why she got signed (other than she being extremely talented, beautiful and young, and still is). So the comparison of two big voiced superstars was inevitable but in the end turned out great
Jack Reacts what you should also know is that before they agreed to actually record together, they didn’t play into the rivalry. But they kind of remained their distance. They were both told that the other had agreed to record the song together, when neither of them had agreed yet. So because Whitney thought Mariah had already said yes, and Mariah thought Whitney had already said yes, they both agreed to do the song. Little would they know that very quickly They would become such good friends.
I love your comment but if you listen carefully at 5:33, everyone is singing their parts Mariah sings the melody and Whitney sings the harmony, it's just that Whitney started The first note in the melody before switching quickly to the harmony. Mariah sings the lower part throughout the bridge.

the song of "when you believe" was used in one of my favorite animated movies of all time "The prince of Egypt" and of course it won an Oscar for best original song.
I remember running home that day to watch my Lady and the great Whitney Houston. Such a moment in time, so blessed they blessed us with this.

Mariah wasn't having the best voice day here, and you can tell she's self conscious about it, but I love how Whitney is giving her support by holding her hand and through her facial expressions. Also, both artists were tricked into doing this project by being promised that the other lady had already agreed to it when they hadn't.
That was a masterclass on vocal performance. So much depth and emotion. It just pulls you in. Just beautifully done!
