Thanks for tuning in everyone - hope you're all doing well and staying indoors for the time being.
    Quick corrections:
    - DOOM 3 released on PC first, and was then ported to the ORIGINAL Xbox in 2005 (not the xbox360).
-Wolfenstein released in 92 not 91. They started working on Wolfenstein 3D in 91 I believe.
Stay tuned for more documentaries along with full coverage for DOOM Eternal coming soon!

I've discovered DOOM in 1994, when I was 15 year old, and it blew my mind, it was unlike any other games I've played before. I've spent hours and hours playing DOOM at night, when the only PC we've had wasn't occupied... What a great time it was.

Brings back memories. Originally I had only PC speaker which limited the sounds to very basic noises and no music.
Had a friend to who soundblaster and would play occasionally at his house. It was so awesome!
Eventually I got adlib which was only 1/2 way there but was an improvement!

Thanks for the memory flashback. Back in the 90's I used to modify autoexec.bat and config.sys and put them on a boot floppy disk. I first had a PC with 4MB RAM which had lousy graphics. Then I got another PC which had 8MB RAM and great graphics. I used to play with a friend. We'd connect our two PCs with a cable using the serial and parallel ports. I've installed sound cards to improve the sound. We played Doom, Doom2, Ultimate Doom, Quake, Duke Nukem and others. Great times.

The thing that GOT me into Doom was the story. I read a Doom novel as a kid and loved the story of the Doomguy going deeper into Hell. Was fantastic.

That game gives me the chills in a way that only DOOM can...the cut scenes, log entries/emails found in the PDAs, dark atmosphere and "Oh s*****" moments just made it a lot of scary fun!

@@christopheralthouse6378 I agree, I love the entire franchise, all the games since 1993. A return to the horror style would be so awesome, with all the improvements in lightning technology, ray tracking, incredible shadow renditions and details textures would make enemies so scarry.
And for the flashlight mechanics make it like the first version but for single handed weapons (like the pistol, the cube, etc) one hand flashlight and the other the weapon. For the big guns just ambient light or even the weapon's on light effects (like the Plasma Riffle and BFG).

Doom II was one of the most defining games of my childhood and I have fond memories from around age 7 (back in 97') of learning how to setup a Serial Link between two PC's to play co-op and deathmatch with my Dad - which was probably the moment that sparked my IT interest and career today. Around that same time I met a kid at school who was also a huge Doom fan, and we would spend all lunch time talking about the game, and recreating the monster and guns sounds etc. One Saturday morning my Dad had said me and my friend could play over modem which got us super excited, and initially that took ages to setup due to us having to disconnect the internet, call each other so my Dad could explain what settings my friend had to configure, then both reconnecting to the Dial-up, creating the "lobby", and praying that it worked this time.
That moment we both finally got into a game and could see and type to each other in the Entryway was SURREAL (I still remember being mildly upset that my Doomguy was Indigo instead of my favorite colour Green)

The Ultimate Doom and Doom II somehow feel the most scary and creepy. With the crucified half bodies on the walls, infernal drawings, impaled bodies... and that midi music. Some people try to make covers of the original Doom music, but automatically, with higher fidelity it loses its scary feel.
Btw the cinematics in the post- Doom 2 games look cool, but on the other hand, it steals the moment of surprise and need-to-learn when encountering an enemy you've never met before. When I played Knee-deep In The Dead for the fist time, I remember how terrified I was when I finally entered Phobos Anomaly, right away I sensed that there will be something big behind the silence. And that scream of the Barons of Hell did justice to my pants later...
    Great video, thanks!

FYI carmack wrote 99% of the rendering pipeline for doom 2016 (idtech6). All the crytek guy did was add vulkan support.
Idtech7 is identical (essentially) to 6. The only real difference in the rendering pipeline is the removal of megatextures and updating the vulkan function calls to the latest version. So it's still mostly Carmacks work.
I only bring it up because it shows his absolute genius and he deserves credit for idtech7 even though he works at Oculus where he created some amazing magical math that keeps the Rift S controller tracking accurate even when the camera can't see them. Prior to the update he made it didn't work well when out of camera view but he wrote code that used the sensors in the controllers and some insane math
