those two RE titles on gamecube still blows my mind to this day.. it was visually way ahead of its time. Gamecube was eating the competition in terms of graphics

    • @adawg37
      @adawg37 4 года назад +23

Yeah, it was more powerful than PS2. (Specs may not seem that way, but it was like a racing 4 cyl in a tiny car vs a weak V6 in an SUV. Sure PS2 had the V6, 2 more cylinders, but the 4 cyl of the game cube pumped out better performance and easily won the race.)
The OG xbox was more powerful but that was like the epitome of 'Murica excess.

Yeah, it's a shame they didn't use standard sized disks or that thing would have been a monster. It's my favorite of that generation, but if they used regular disks with more memory then the GC would have been the winner of that generation imo.

I agree. But I also accept that that approach doesn't always guarantee that money will be made. They are gunna make bank off this RE2 remake, and if it was a remake the REmake, then the chances of people buying it goes way down. It's what happened to the REmake itself(as well as being a GC exclusive). Poor sales for a AAA game. I just wish they would have remade RE2 back then.

Thing is last time playing all the RE series it was about finishing the game and surviving. With the newly released remake it's more than surviving but a story of each character even the npc how they actually affected the next line of RE world. I wonder what's next after RE3 remake though. I have high expection after the RE2 remake but I wonder how would they change the mechanics of the game later on. It would be a real challenge to overhaul it so it wouldnt be stagnant like what happened to RE 5 and 6.

I heard they are making RE8 which will use some of the ideas from 3.5 where there is a virus that causes hallucinations. not sure if it will be another VR title or not though. There is not much info yet. Also Nemesis is meant to be being remade, too.

  • @facuuaf

Great! Maybe you forgot to mention that RE5 wasn't intended to be fully coop, and the first 2007 trailer for the game showed Chris completely alone (also, the atmosphere resembled RE4 a LOT more), but racism and cultural issues made the developers add an african teammate (with a super basic and boring story background). That changed almost everything, specially since the narrative of the game focuses a lot on "partners" and death. Also, the action was pumped up since having two characters gives you more ammo and power

I used to be a huge fan of the franchise from the moment I played RE2 in 98. It is my favorite game on the PS1. However, the games seemed to get worse as they went on. RE3 was all right though inferior. CV was fun, but it also turned the narrative into a convoluted mess (especially with Claire contacting Leon to contact Chris despite her not knowing where Chris was being the whole reason she got captured in the first place).
I enjoyed Outbreak most of the time and RE4 was spectacular. I actually even kind of liked Gaiden. It wasn't great by any means, but it was an interesting experience. RE5 was a good conclusion to the franchise, but then it just kept going. With how bad the movies became and then RE6 being a Gears of War/Left4Dead/Haunting Ground Bayplosion QTE bullet sponge nightmare, I lost my entire desire to ever touch the series again. I sold off everything except for REmake, 2 and 3 and 2012 was the last time I had ever touched them.
I'm not big on first person games that don't have Metroid in their title, so I never played RE7.
However, playing REmake on the PS4 and the new RE2 remake has reignited my love for the franchise. If Capcom keeps the games like this new one, but also cuts down on the overly complicated jumping the shark bullshit like huge anarctica bases and outbreaks on every corner of the map, I might be willing to get into the newer installments again. Or hell, if they remake RE3, I hope they give the Umbrella story an actual conclusion in that game since their causing an entire city having to be nuked would have forced the government to shut them down instantaneously. It just seems way too farfetched for a pharmaceuticals company to be that irresponsible and that capable.
BTW, I don't know what you mean in your RE2 segment about them hiring a Hollywood writer to do the new story as Noboru Sugimura was not that. He was a cop drama writer that also worked on some episodes to Lupin III Part 2 and several Toku shows including Winspector, Kamen Rider Black, Zyuranger, Dairanger, Kakuranger, and Ohranger. He also was the man who wrote the Onimusha Trilogy and Clocktower 3.

    Just a slight correction here:
There's a lot of conflicting articles that say "Code Veronica" is the true RE3, and others that say quite the opposite. From what I understand, RE3: Nemesis was indeed a side project, but Code Veronica was not necessarily intended to be Resident Evil 3 either. There was an intended Resident Evil 3 project starring "Hunk" but it was canned.
If you all have heard information to the contrary, please reply here, I'm interested to learn more. Because of the supposed contract with Sony, there's a lot of confusion about this particular topic.

The game that you are talking about involving Hunk, I undestood to be one of the Resident Evil 4 iterations that got canned. I think there were three version of RE 4 , two fo them were scrapped before the final one was picked and one turned into DMC. I'll see if I can find some sources and either post them here or dm you. Oh and its my understanding that Code Veronica was meant to be Resident Evil 3 and as you stated Nemesis was a spin off.

I think the issue with Code: Veronica (and why it kept it's development title as it's name) is that when the next Resident Evil was officially announced as being in the works, it was announced as a DreamCast exclusive. For a game that had debuted on the PlayStation. The PlayStation was easily the more popular console, so that didn't sit well with series fans. So you have Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, an attempt to split the difference. I think that's also the reason why Code: Veronica in spite of easily being as good as Resident Evil 1 or 2, isn't as beloved by franchise fans. :) BTW you have, hands down, *the* best Resident Evil retrospective on the net. Well done!

I was 16 when Resident Evil first came out on the PSX. I have been obsessed with the franchise since. Even read the books...I absolutely adored the series until it started not being the game I started playing. Somewhere between 4 & 5 I lost that feeling.
It scratched an itch I never knew I had and gave me a feeling I don’t think I can ever get back.
Everything you said in this video is pretty spot on.
I really enjoyed 7 and it gave me hope for the future of the franchise. No co-op was also a huge win as it brought it back to the slow claustrophobic tension filled experience I fell in love with in the first place.
I’m currently playing RE2 remake and it’s everything that I wanted it to be.
I’m lucky to have this game right now but I’m still very curious as to where they go from here. Im good with a new game or even more remakes like this.
Took Capcom the better part of a decade to get back on track but here we are, in a renaissance for Resident Evil, going back to its roots for inspiration as to where to go with the franchises future.
P.S. I wouldn’t mind a fixed camera style game with updated control and graphics to really get back to the root feeling I use to have. May be in the minority but I don’t care.

I like how it was the first game to implement the player zapping mechanic where you can switch between Rebecca and Billy. Plus Dr. James Marcus was fucking creepy lol. Overall, I would say it's underrated as the horror elements were amplified in this prequel.

@@journey95far49 re4 deff feels like a resident evil game lol. Just because it has a different camera angel and mechanics dosent make it not feel like a RE game. RE is all about atmosphere, feeling of being underpowered (which on your first playthrough you do) and puzzles. Re4 checks all boxes.

Re4 isnt my favorite. It's a worthy resident evil overall yea. But I hated what they did to Leon's character as a whole. In re2 he was a rookie cop just trying to do what he could to survive and help others and I liked him. So when I finally got through 4 I just felt like they made him a edgey character for the sake of current times at that time. Everyone around me was getting that haircut and brooding his attitude, and I just didnt see his character development going that direction. Had fun and such, but idk way they moved leon forward from 2 just rubbed me the wrong way.

When me and my friend popped this disc in for the first time in '96 we were so scared, and it was so difficult, but we knew it was a masterpiece. Neither of us wanted to be the one to quit, so we pulled through. We then beat R2 and Nemesis together. We ended up in different schools and I have not seen him since. I wonder if he kept playing the series on his own...

The first RE was one of my all time favorite games and I really liked RE2 and RE3 of which I liked 3 better actually. I did like RE4 even though it was not really a RE style anymore imo. The rest of the series is forgetable for me. Until RE7 which was excellent even though it didnt feel like a part of the story line really. But Resident Evil 2 Remake was the best game since the original game to me. Absolutely stunning. I've played it over and over again and I would instantly buy a RE1 or RE3 remake of this current Capcom team. Btw. very solid review of the series. Well done!

I’ll never forgot going over to my friends house in 2005 to see him playing Resident Evil 4. It was the first Resident Evil game I had ever seen and it really surprised me to see Leon get decapitated by the Verdugo. It was the most violent video game I had ever seen at that point. Definitely first time I saw someone lose a head. I’ve been a fan ever since. The over shoulder camera made the game the most enjoyable in my opinion. I could say I’m guilty of being a fan of the action oriented Resident Evil installments. I liked Resident Evil 5 but the daytime setting made it less enjoyable for me. I loved Resident Evil 6 because of the multiple storylines and new dodge and roll mechanics along with new melee styles. It felt to me like the apex of the Resident Evil games because of the freedom of character movement. I liked Resident Evil 7 but it felt really detached from the lore of the older games. I’ve really been digging the Resident Evil 2 remake. I feels like it’s the perfect combination of over the shoulder camera setting, limited item management, puzzle solving, and story placement in the series.

Sega Genesis was fairly violent. I remember playing a game banned all over the world. It was like a power ranger zord having a western shootout with giant monsters in a static-ish FPS playstyle. I remember shooting arms off of monsters and they-d throw em at me.
