This is probably the best advice I have received this year on the reality of running an SEO consulting business or agency that no one is talking about. We are constantly bombarded with marketing messages from people trying to sell you their products that it can confuse people from doing the work they enjoy. It wasn't until I took a deep step back from everything and started to look at one high-level service I am providing for clients and not follow the crowd. I love your mindset in business and you helped me breakthrough and shift my mindset in business to have the confidence to sell just one service to clients. Thanks Ryan!!
Such great advice! I'm in the middle of tearing down my web biz that's going broke and rebuilding it based on SOPs. I need to do more work around the Profit calculations as you suggest.
I gotta know Ryan - Do you speed up your videos sometimes? You talk so fast and there's so much information I get from your videos, that it feels like a really productive use of my time! Instead of watching 2-3 videos, I watch 1 one yours. geez.
Awesome video and great value! It would be cool if you can create a youtube playlist with all the videos you are doing about creating&growing your new agency, so it will be more organized (just my 2cents...) Thanks
Do you recommend to niche down in industries or should we focus on being a general agency? Also, should we do PPC and SEO etc.. or should we just focus on SEO in an agency?
Wow, man. I can tell you have an MBA! I thought about doing one about 9 years ago, but did not because of student loans.. But I can see where it helped you start and manage your agency! Good stuff..
what does a degree have to do with resource management? that's all an agency is, in the end. You just figure out what goes in, what goes out and plan accordingly.
75% margin. You must really hire alot of offshore staff. Content needs to be done by locals that understand the market searcher intent, lingo, nuances, people and the client. Where and what do you pay for quality content to get written so that you maintain 75% margins.
I do - my staff is 90% offshore. I hate to give you a sales pitch, but you should really check out my content marketing module, I break it all down for you there: theblueprint.training/trainings/content-marketing/
Great video Ryan!!! I enjoyed getting so much value from it. Any advice on getting clients of English Speaking countries ( aka rich countries hahaha) from where i live, Argentina, ( aka 400 usd a month is the avg salary = poor country ) ????
It's all about the brand and perception of your company in that market. That comes through creating content that proves you're an expert and can handle their campaigns. Podcasts, RUclips, speaking engagements - do them all
Excellent video Ryan. So many experts speak to tasks agencies can do to create revenue, but creating revenue and being profitable in terms of agency ownership are two entirely different things. Being CEO a creative digital agency (www.uniteinteractive.com), your comments totally resonated with me. Thanks for continually producing outstanding content!
In school you quickly realize that not everyone is good at the same things. So it's ironic that when it comes to life and especially business most everyone simply assumes that being successful is just a matter of following gurus. Buying a guitar won't guarantee you'll be a guitar hero. THe truth is LOTS of people simply aren't designed to run a business; especially an agency with several clients, employees and all its many moving parts. First thing you should do is ask yourself if your built for this type of business. I'm a big fan of the online business community, but having clients doesn't make you the boss. More often then not it makes you just another self employed employe. 404 error to your link: ryanwashere.com/agency-ecomomics/

@Ryan Stewart Good stuff, Ryan....
How do you define “custom work”
custom work is anything outside the scope of what your agency does, aka your position or 'niche' in the market
