- 8/12/11 Jelly Roll Morton's "Dead Man Blues" peformed by Wynton Marsalis-trumpet, Victor Goines-clarinet, Marcus Printup-trumpet, Wess 'Warmdaddy' Anderson-saxophone, Carlos Henriquez-bass, Ali Jackson-drums, Dan Nimmer-piano, Chris Crenshaw-trombone, James Chirillo-banjo, and Ricky 'Dirty Red' Gordon-washboard.
Jazz in Marciac, Marciac, FRANCE.
I'm a US history teacher, 7th grade. I like to add music links to my assignment pages so the kids can click on something different, but relevant to the subject matter. I used this on some work I gave and one of my kids just responded that "the song...is so good that I plan on learning how to play it on my clarinet." Just made my day! B)
Hopefully, they also listen to the Jelly Roll Morton version
The mics are ADK 3 Sigma, model U47
I want to play this at my funeral, I feel its way better than playing something sad- this way everyone can celebrate
So do I!
Dear Vinton, I believe that you are the best successor to the great Louis Armstrong, I love your creativity and good luck to you
The person who can continue. Thank you.
(and the chief sits comfortably)
I never liked Dixie land jazz when i was young and and dumb. I love it now! I guess i must have gotten smart!
this music makes you speechless! There is nothing you can do but just listen to it again. Wynton, you are my role model, even though I don't play trumpet the way you play, the emotions that you show and the love you have for playing is seriously contagious! You make me want to be a better musician and a better person!! Thank you so much for being exactly who you are! -Heather
I second the motion ! 💕
He held that for 12 measures!!!!!
I had the honour, pleasure, joy and any other superlitive you wish to use being at this concert in Marciac on the night of 12thh August. We did not let them leave the stage before 2 in the morning!! The genius of this group of musicians is to perform this music played before to only a few underprivilaged to new atrrangements. Each and every musician contributed indivual styles to this music which could have got lost for ever. (the banjo played looked like an ex-banker from Leahman Brothers)
Wow, they make the dead man come to life.
So right
Swings so hard at times...it rocks.
this is great. i especially liked seeing the washboard and how it is played.
Washboard I have never seen it played like that watch tuba skinny if you want to see some more washboard more traditional
If this doesnt play at my funeral, I aint going.
*LOL* 😅 💀
I have no words and expressions Marsalis is genius and clarinetist is great all musicians are out of questions they're great
Meu Deus! Como vcs são maravilhosamente, divinamente, inimagivelmente..bagunçados. Amo isso.
That is without question the best rendition of Dead Man Blues I have heard in a long time and I have been playing this happy music since 1961. Tradjazzman in Portland.
You know it's gonna be one of those nights when Winton starts his solo like that 😂
Those licks from Marsalis...It's like someone's talking.
It was such a great honour to meet Wynton Marsalis at the Joy of Jazz and that colleboration he did on stage with Sibongile Khumalo was my highlight of the evening, such an awesome experience.
2:15
Wow, Victor Goines kept that one going for 21 seconds!
Once you get the hang of it, you can keep it going forever
Love it all , and especially when a Band leader has something ta say@ 3:12 circa, love it,, Wynton just havin some Fun!🎉, every note , accent, phrase, has purpose ,,,,feel dat,,, it inspires the band, and me,
This sounds like it would incredibly fun to play!!
This was written in the 1920s you can find recordings of the song from that time here on youtube.
Wow ! great a bunch of guys enjoying themselves and entertaing lots of people
Wynton plays a Monette B2S3 mouthpiece in STC-3 weight. On his Monette trumpet, the mouthpiece is an integral mouthpiece. (as you can see, it is a built in mouthpiece)
I can listen to this all Day and half the night, thank You Guys.
I want to learn how to play Clarinet like Mr. Victor Goines...that shaking clarinet thingy is awesome
Try to find Sidney Bechet on youtube
Kevin K It’s more ridiculous than awesome - and Sydney Bechet certainly never did that. The rest of the performance completely misses the spirit of Jelly Roll Morton’s beautiful version - the different bumblebee flights are completely out of character.
Thank you All
The solo-award goes to Mr. Goines.
The song is written, but they are adding their own improv in the music.
Jelly Roll in hi-fi. Who could ask for more? Thanks for keeping that beautiful section with the three clarinets.
Love it at all times!!! I know Jelly Roll's relatives the Mc Kenna's from childhood and was schooled about his history from the great nephew before he passed....This brings back my memories of what his great ;nephew shared with me.
I had never seen that clarinet tremolo technic before...
Liked that a lot.
Wow! Just Wow!
The communication around 7 minute mark is really smooth!
Wynton puts together some of the best bands out there still playing that real, old school jazz. He's one of my favorites by far. Weird question, but does anyone happen to know what kind of microphones those are on the clarinets? They sound fantastic! They look a little like short architecture ribbon mics, and if anyone knew the make and model, I'd love to grab some for my studio!
No sorry
I Love this till death do I part.
Love the clarinet duet. There is something for everybody here.
Victor Goines en respiration continue ; super clarinettiste
yeah, he's great!
everything perfect !
Alberto Zorzi Actually nothing like and he would never have done that stupid pulling the clarinet in and out of his mouth
Un régal pour les oreilles
Wynton Marsalis, sir, you are an absolute genius! I love your approach and style! Thank you so much for uploading- your passion and ability for the music has completely entranced me! I love your music and the way you and the band play! Thank you so much
He’s reading now
Phenomenal. I saw this band in San Francisco a few months ago and not one song approached the coolness of this tune.
Straordinari Grandissimi professionisti,Technica Impeccabile. Mario Calvisi
Wonderful and thanks especially for the three clarinet trio part that was in the original Jelly Roll Morton recording.
The guy playing the washboard uses old shotgun shells on his fingers. I wonder how that goes down at security when he's boarding an international flight?
He wasn't disagreeing with the washboard player, he was just joking around, chill out.
you must be fun at parties

Super Wynton !!
Deshalb: Super Wynton !!

I truly eat, sleep and walk jazz, but, original Shrimp boat by Dollar Brand from album Peace+2
Wooonderful!
Vilken härlig musik
I absolutely love jazz... like period. But I find it hilarious how the perception of jazz has changed. You go back to the 20's and it was the trashy, dirty, sex music, and now jazz is like the "sophisticated" thing.
Good point . The bands in the 20s did not have the scores in front of them when
they played . However the playing here is first rate !
I Disagree 100%.
There was nothing trashy nor dirty about Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Ray Brown, Joe Williams, Ella Fitzgerald, Dakota Staton, Sarah Vaughn, Sweets Edison, Roy Eldridge, Art Tatum,Flip Phillip's, Jean Louis Illinois Jacquet just to name a few. You cannot mix the upper crust with the lower crust because the upper crust was just the opposite of what you had in mind and they are not trashy nor dirty nor sexy but instead great jazz musicians.
@@lindalawon9151 I'm very late to these comments, however I believe he meant that was how the public at that time had seen jazz.
Authentic

Wynton appreciates all of your comments.
Nice shout out from eptx
οπως ξαναειπα:σουπερ!στο τραγουδι αυτό,"ο καθενας,παίζει καλυτερα απο τον αλλον",που λέμε στον τόπο μου.
Wynton for Musiklovers 🌹🇸🇪🐓🌷👍
I love this piece so much !
But how did Walter Blanding get left out of the personnel list ?
Please correct.
The genuine blues link between New Orleans, the Delta, and the Bluff City resonated on the original Beale Street until Dr. King was silenced by jim crow ... . "It (Beale Street) ain't the same no mo!" Plato and Aristotle notwithstanding: mimesis ain't diegesis!
I love to transcribe music
