      Agreed. The drum solo is amazing . Instead of just banging out a loud show-off type of drumming, he skillfully transitions the gospel classic from its slow "piano" beginning to the "allegro" quick dixie style uplifting finale.
      Bravo.

    I bet that Clapton considers this performance one of the tops in his career. Not being his main style, it must have fulfilled his aspirations of playing black music, the very reason he became a pro. I can see him thinking "look at me surrounded by 7 black jazz musicians. This is it, I made it."

    • @murph3001
      @murph3001 4 года назад +5

      I totally agree 1000 times ___ I saw the same thing. I think however rather than playing with black musicians he is in awe of playing with an all star team. ___ his smile at the end says it all ____ wonderful moment ___

    • @freddymclain
      @freddymclain 2 года назад +2

      There's a certain validity to your point. I 'made it' in 1965 when I wandered into the Continental Club in 3rd ward in Houston and met Spookey Dancye (Hammond B-3) Ronald Wynn (drums) and Horace Grigsby(vocals.) I worked with those guys, and a good many other notable Houston black musicians until 1968. After the MLK assassination, I found The Old Quarter in downtown Houston and started doing solo gigs there. I did tunes like 'Work Song' and 'God Bless the Child,' which the mostly white clientele had never heard. Still, I never felt like I had 'made it.' I was just a playing bum trying to supplement my meager day gig pay (In 1965, my salary as a first-year teacher was $4590, but everyone knew that the pay scale was set up for women whose husbands worked at Exxon or the like.) I remember those days, and I'm thankful to those black musicians for helping me, mainly by being tolerant and kind.

      It’s supposed to be played slow at the beginning (this being the traditional style of New Orleans funeral procession), and after the drum 🥁 solo it picks up. It symbolizes the sorrow of losing a loved one to a celebratory ending knowing that that loved one is no longer in pain but in the arms of Jesus. 🎉 perfect interpretation of this old hymn

    I loved this song in all its entirety.
    It brings a teapot my eye thinking of all those dearly loved family an friends no longer here with us.
    And I'm reminded of the time when I will be rejoicing wither in heaven.

    Esto esta por encima de todo. Del dinero, del poder y la ambición. Esto es lo que nos identifica como personas y hace q millones de almas se unan con un sentimiento compartido. Esto nunca podrán quitárnoslo. Muchas gracias de corazón.

    I feel so much emotion in this. Even when they are doing something like clapping their hands in time, you can tell that they love what they are doing

    My oh my, now that takes me back... as an old preacher, I remember that song and the way they played it and my brother sang it. This song was also my grandfather Scott's favorite hymn. Great job to Wynton Marsalis, Eric Clapton and the rest of the band. Bravo!!

    Certainly the best version of this gospel with that of Mahalia Jackson. Magnificent solo from Eric Clapton as well as that of Ali Jackson and of course Winton Marsialis always excellent. Congratulations to all.
