UPDATE:
That noise, It turned out to be the Water Pump Bearing, it started several months back, and I thought it was the timing chain, because it sounded like a chain rubbing against the guides, so I first heard it then did some research, so in this order this is what I did to fix that noise.
1. Replaced Serpentine Belt & Pully and Tensioner (DID NOT fix noise)
2. Replaced Timing Chain Tensioner (DID NOT fix noise)
3. Replaced Water Pump (FIXED the NOISE)
My car is quite again:)

I film myself fixing and replacing my Upper Timing Chain Tensioner on my BMW E65 E66 745i 745li 750li 750i. This motor is the BMW N62 motor V8 4.8L, if your wondering the car in the video is a 2006 BMW E65 750i. This was a simple replacement took start to finish about 15-20 mins.
Thanks for Watching:)

How do you know that tensioner needed to be replaced?
When you hear a rattle similar to this then it might be a good idea. But if it is the tensioner then that noise is pretty much constant. However it may not solve your issue 100% if your guides are broken or your chain too stretched. If you have such noises touch your valve cover. That is the place where a stretched chain slaps onto from the inside. It is like a dozen of gremlins knock on the valve cover because they want out. Don't forget to prime your tensioners with oil before putting them in.
Its 27mm for the rest of the world lol great vid, cheers m8
Its 65-70nm torque spec too ;)
I own 2007 BMW 750Li. I have a slight noise coming from drivers side valve cover. The noise sound very low, only hear it when close to engine. I ordered a New upper Timing Chain Tensioner, I HOPE that is what it is.
Thank You for your posts, VERY HELPFULL. Fixed my Thermostat, L7 AMP, many other small things. LOVE THE 750LI, Love the posts.
Mike Siedliski Did that work?
+Mike Siedliski How did you fix the L7 amp?
I took it to a Stereo Shop in San Jose, called Short Circuit. Tell the guy I send you.
I have a brand new one, rebuilt.
On the valve cover noise, I had to put in a new waterpump,,,::(( $1,200 installed, flush, BMW Coolant)
+Mike Siedliski How much for did you pay for the rebuilt L7 amp?
I wondered timing chain problem when I saw the first part your water pump video but after seeing the slack in your pump I guess it was the pump. My pump seized without warning on my e38, snapping the tensionor etc. Was the only tow home in my life and cost lots to fix...I enjoy your videos.
My parts are ordered and I need to fix this asap, I don't want to risk seizing my pump and causing other issues. Thanks for watching the videos. And thanks for commenting:)
How do you change the the other side .there's no room
I have an x5 with the 4.8i and there is not enough room to get it out
you have to drop the engine or subframe from what I've heard
Got a 07 E65 & Love your videos you give me hope: )
Thanks for watching the videos, I have some more in the works:)
why you not changing second timing chain ???
Why don't you just remove your belts and run the engine for a minute - to see IF the noise goes away? Kind of sounds like a bad bearings in the waterpump to me. Could also be a bad belt or tensioner. Removing the belt would narrow this down.
Can you replace the lower timing chain tensioner by lifting the engine a bit to achieve the required clearance to get it out?
sean symons did you figure this out?!
I have the same problem no room on passenger side. Help.
If can you make video about water pump, i guess mine i will need to change, i have somes noise but i cant figure out where it dioes comes. I like your videos i did save i lot if cash with your videos
Glad you saved a lot of cash:) I filmed my water pump diy, I just put it in yesterday, I'll edit that and put that together stay tuned in 1-2 days for that.
Remove the belts and run it with out it and see if the noise goes away..... if it does then is one off the pulleys
what noise was it making? i think mine has a problem??
great man , great video , love your video's , thx
What size is that bolt
Is it possible to do this that easly with lower one on the other side?
Hi i have a E70 4.8 v8
X drive
Do i need timing tool to remove the lower timing Chain tensioner?
thank you for your video, i know this is not the subject but i trust your opinion, have you dealt with valvetronic motors? im doing my valve covers and once i put the valvetronic motors bmw requires a program to relearn them, but other ppl have said that without turning the car on just on position 2 for 340 seconds twise that it will relearn them any ideas?
IMO you don't need the answer by now but someone else might - valvetronic relearning program, ISTA-D, takes about 3 seconds for both to relearn their positions. IMO the whole valvetronic idea is BS and BMW could have kept the M62 design.
What was the ultimate diagnosis? I have a similar noise from that area.
Did you star the engine with out belt
?
Maybe the noise from outside engine
Hi thank for your videos I have the same car is only one or the have another in the other side too
I have the same exact issue
I took it to ALL GERMAN AUTO in San Diego and they told me it was my timing chain was a lil loose and my upper chain guide was no good !
It turned out to be the Water Pump Bearing, it started several months back, and I thought it was the timing chain also, because it sounded like chain rubbing against the guides, or timing chain guides, so I first heard it then did some research, so in this order this is what I did to fix that noise.
1. Replaced Serpentine Belt & Pully and Tensioner (DID NOT fix noise)
2. Replaced Timing Chain Tensioner (DID NOT fix noise)
3. Replaced Water Pump (FIXED the NOISE)
My car is quite again:)
So be careful because a shop will be unsure sometimes because these cars are quite complex. If you don't fix your car yourself, and you take it to a shop make sure you pay to quite the noise and fix what's really inside.
Thanks for watching the video:) Let me know what happens

I'm. Just started my car the morning after after a 500 mile trip.. And its making a horrible rubbing noise inside the right hand side of the head too.
Making Dreams Come True - do you have any clips of your sound? I have sound coming from same area and does NOT sound like sound in DIY guys video
Did you figure out the small oil leak that was there..?
What caused the noise? I have a similar problem.
It's your water pump or harmonic balancer
Your right, it was the water pump bearing, just fixed it today, thanks for your input. Noise is gone:)
I know I was falling asleep watching the video lol... What's up with trash for treasures?
Lol, that's my new web series, I go around hunting and diving dumpsters for my new hobbie, I've been finding some great stuff.
No I ment when r u gonna upload the new episode... But u already did
Open with 27mm socket
I have same noise, lot of comments on other videos says it's timing belt.
Check the volt for the alt
Can you explain why did you change it? Wht bring you to change it?
That noise is what caused me to change it, it sounded like rubbing chain so I thought it was the tensioner after doing some research but I guess the research was wrong because I just replaced the water pump today and the noise is gone:) It was the water pump bearing making the noise.
DIYsavecash MY 08 550i has the exact noise, I bought a new water pump and will get it done tomorrow. tnks.
Sweet, let's watch a misdiagnosis in progress!!
It definitely sounds like a timing chain guide is completely worn and the chain is just flexing in the cover
Sounded like a pulley bearing, honestly.
Just take the belt of the alternator and start the car. If the noise is gone thats it....
water pump
Too late now but its seems it's going from downside
