Grandma passed down the same type of sheet cake to me and every year dad asks me to make him this sheet cake for his birthday since it’s his favorite cake from childhood. The icing is SO rich (especially when leaving out the nuts). Something fun you should try is starting to make the icing 5 min before the cakes done so that as soon as the cake is out of the oven you can pour the icing on top of it. The cake almost absorbs some of the icing and it’s fantastic 😊

I make a powdered sugar icing with vanilla and put it on my 2-Great-Aunt Ediths' Applesauce Loaf made as a 13x9" cake instead. By putting the icing on the cake it absorbs into the cake ¼-½ inch. My husband sat one morning and ate the whole cake!!! He had never had an applesauce cake before. Because it is meant to be a loaf it makes for a shallower cake....he was 22 at the time, and now that he's 66 he can't do that anymore. Lol between then and now he had to compete with 2 boys, so he learned how to do with less. Lol
I've been making this cake for 35 years. It's the BEST! Even some people who don't like chocolate like this cake. When I use buttermilk, it's Oklahoma Buttermilk Cake. When I use sour cream, it's Texas Sheet Cake. Also, I usually make mine in a 9x13. You need to put the warm frosting on still warm cake.
Born & raised Texan. I’ve never thought to use sour cream. I’ve always made it with buttermilk. I’ve done a red velvet cake with sour cream when I didn’t remember to vinegar. ( someone swore by it on facebook) but it wasn’t that bad actually. & it’s not to sweet since you can control the amount of powder sugar. It’s not nearly as sweet as a buttercream. 😊

I made a trip from California to west Texas in the 70’s, my cousin served us Texas Sheet Cake, it’s got to be one of the top five cakes on the list of cakes I like best! When we got back home I think we made it at least once a week for months! Same thing with a pumpkin log! I make the TSC in a 9 x 13 pan, have never had it in a sheet pan.

Yep. I was unsure what made this a Texas cake, until he added the pecans. Much of Texas is chock full of pecan trees, lol. I live right near the Nueces river which is named for all the pecan trees that grow along its banks. (Nueces is Spanish for “walnuts”, but when the first Spaniards got here, they didn’t know what to call these nuts. So, they called them the closest thing they were familiar with: walnuts/nueces. At some point someone learned that the Algonquin tribes called them “paccan”. So, in French it became “pacane”; in Spanish “pacana”; and of course in English “pecan”. Still have no idea where the “pee-can” pronunciation came from since it’s so different from the others. Lol!

I’m a texan from Houston and this (similar) recipe is and has been my favorite cake for years. The only difference is my recipe calls for a teaspoon of cinnamon in the batter, I sometimes add a little more. Try it you’ll love it even more, I promise!

We were in Germany in the 1990s, and I made one of these for a Christmas dinner at some German friends’ house. It made such an impression, I had to make several of these that winter to take to gatherings. It really is exquisitely rich and delicious!

Hispanic culture tends to be cinnamon with chocolate. Super yummy.

We were in Germany in the 1990s, and I made one of these for a Christmas dinner at some German friends’ house. It made such an impression, I had to make several of these that winter to take to gatherings. It really is exquisitely rich and delicious!
