As a former dev this brings joy to my heart, it is 99.9% completely explained : one thing that is forgotten is that there is a 0.2s delay between these gauges. Probably the best video explaining Elemental Gauge Theory I've ever seen. Shield breaking and ICDs were a pain to explore when Genshin just came out. Hopefully more people will discover this video and may your channel continue to grow. I almost cried when I saw this vid, two years ago my friends and I spent days and nights on this topic. It's nice seeing other people being dedicated on this part of the game and not just see reaction videos on youtube.
Happy to hear that the visuals hit the mark for you. Those were definitely the most challenging part of making this video. A majority of my editing time was spent just going through every clip frame by frame to track where all the Elemental applications were happening so I could time the gauges correctly lol.
@@jyolikearock_ I'm also glad that you had the visuals since i have not heard of this term before but i have hard of ICD and what not a lot from the various build videos, appreciate the effort for putting in the videos 😊
This is some "Sumeru Akademiya" level lessons. Didn't know that this stuff had so many layers, but you managed to break it down into things that were much easier to understand. Nice vid!
Simultaneous auras with reaction priority is also why Fridge/Hyperfridge teams are a thing. Dendro + Cryo can both be auras at the same time. When hydro is applied on the target with both, freeze gets the priority first, and thanks to the aura tax and the fact that freeze's coefficient is 1, if your cryo and hydro sources are the same gauge, the cryo will "shield" some of the dendro aura but let a little hydro leak through, which lets less hydro react with the underlying dendro. This can let you squeeze an extra bloom core out of the same amount of dendro application.
Bro if my teachers had been as thorough as you in my math classes, I wouldn’t have had to spend all those hours struggling through the material myself. Seriously impressive stuff here. Great work!
0:54 ACKSHUALLY Zhongli is currently the only character in the game that can apply a Geo aura via his Elemental Burst being Petrification 🤓 Okay now that I finished the video, this is probably the best one I've seen covering the topic especially with the visual aid.
I mean sure but Petrification as an aura results in Crystallize when it comes into contact with anything that can react with Geo anyway. The strength of the Aura or the applied element is irrelevant lol
this 17 min video is more simplified, informative and easy to digest than a 6 hour long modules projected by our professor in college which makes us fall asleep before halfway. i could easily get an A+ if genshin impact was included in our curriculum. lol
I'm late to this party, but I've finally watched this video and it's just beautiful how sensible and thorough this while lesson is! The Aura tax, Fatui Armor coefficients, it has everything without dumbing anything down or feeling overwhelming. Thank you for making it, Jyo!
Wow, just wow. I thought Genshin is a simple casual game, not that I need university diploma to understand it. Thanks for great explanation, you really did a good job. It's actually pretty simple concept, the complexity goes just from all different coefficients applied to each individual interaction. But there's just no way I could ever remember it all and apply that knowledge so I guess I'm back to my old good unga bunga.
Tis actually not so complicated. Short form is that you can control who in a party triggers a reaction. It will always be whoever applies less of their element, so that is the character who should be more heavily built, probably. Xingqui with Yelan results in overwhelming Hydro application, making it very unlikely that either of them will be the one to trigger the reactions, and ensuring a stable Aura of Hydro on the target. Therefore, whichever Pyro unit is with them will be the one to trigger the reactions. Inversely, as I tried to run before I ran into Gauge Theory, Kokomi/Yanfei/Noelle/Jean, as Yanfei applies Pyro only on field, and does so relatively quickly, a majority of the Vaporize triggers ended up being Kokomi's jellyfish, which is rather unsatisfying in its effectiveness. Trading Noelle for Xingqui solves that problem and allows Yanfei to trigger all the Vaporize reactions.
@@mileskittman This is really easy to understand, thank you! Also, it’s Xingqiu, not Xingqui, just because you typed it that way multiple times so I thought I’d say something.
The story is more complicated when it comes to dendro. Plus, we also have to learn character buildings. The same archetype of team should have differenttt builds when we consider Bennet, Kazuha buff, Sucrose buffs... Vaporize and Melt is like basic math.
You probably wasn't thinking about this at the time but burning reaction can proc melt multiple times without reappling pyro. Ganyu melt teams benefit greatly from a dendro character
Simply amazing. You actually helped me understand melt-vape teams a lot more intimately. Now I know why theory crafters suggest certain characters for the team (especially national). This was informative and interesting as a dissertation on popular video game should be.

This is my favorite thing tbh I dont play genshin but seeing people get to SUCH levels when talking about game mechanics it always takes my interest Even if its a simple thing seeing it complexified with fandoms findings is just the best thing
This is the clearest and easiest to understand explanation of Elemental Gauge Theory I've ever seen. However, you are missing a few things. Frozen and Hydro (or Cyro) aura can also co-exist when you trigger Freeze and then apply Hydro (or Cyro) to the Frozen enemy, which can be used to set up a double swirl. Also as other comments have mentioned, Frozen/Cyro and Dendro aura can co-exist, which is the main mechanic of Fridge team. Another thing that might not be very useful but you can break elemental shield/armor with pure DMG (no reaction) as long as the DMG dealt is not the same element as the shield/armor, however, you need A LOT of DMG to break it. (usually 5x HP of the enemy who has the shield)
I admire the time and effort you must have put into this to break this complex topic make it rather straightforward and to the point ! Everything was very well presented, I was already familiar with the concept but it was a good refresher...
Amazing video! I can't wait to see if you'll make an advanced version for those more complex topics you mentioned at the end! I liked the EG bars a lot they were a very intuitive and responsive visual aid.
That bar really helps in understanding the theory I used to read the theory but it took me a while to understand what's written there, especially in regard of mutilple aura reactions I'd like to see what you left here explained in future video
A very clear rundown on elemental gauges. I salute you. I knew most of this, but the visual aides that you employed really helped to get the message out there. Even I learned a thing or two about quicken and electro-charge. The only thing I missed was the "fridge" interaction with bloom + cryo and how that allows more cores to be spawned.
Holy this video is sooo good! As someone who finds joy in genshin theoryctafting, it's really nice to find someone explaining it a really informative, engaging, and relatively easy to understand!
I never understood elemental gauge theory until this video. Honestly the best video I’ve seen on this explained. You definitely earned my sub. I have been almost playing genshin for a month and I learn something new every time. I personally think that dendro is the best most versatile element in the game with all the reactions it creates. I just yesterday used a burning overload team and an anemo swirl character to beat a an early floor of the abyss because I didn’t have Bennett so I use Keqing yaoyao xangling and anemo traveler and it was super fun. I have so much stuff I want to try now after watching this video.
1:00 both Geo and Anemo can be auras. Anemo aura is provided by Jean's burst, but only for your own party, not for the mobs. On the other hand, Zhongli's burst petrification can be seen as geo aura by elemental sight.
you can't trigger geo reactions off zhongli's petrification. The same is true for geo hypostasis' aura. Geo can be an aura but it's completely inert and only works as trigger
As a teacher, I really appreciate your visual aid. I really didn't care much for Aura gauges, until it became easily digestible. I'm a sucker for good learning techniques, and I'm surprised to see a tailored one for genshin content.
It's honestly weird to me how all of this isn't explicitly explained and modeled in-game. We should have a in-game damage simulator, we should have detailed walkthroughs with numbers showing us how all these elemental reactions work. It took me 4 MONTHS to finally fully understand everything going on with dendro. I mean, I think I didn't miss anything...heh... I guess they wanted to leave the game feeling "organic" by not letting us in on all the numbers and timings that are happening but it just feels opaque and frustrating.
I always felt like there was a much more intricate system behind reactions than it appears. I always questioned like "Why does Melting the Cryo shield do more with Bennett's skill than Hu Tao's?" And just figured out through time that some attacks just reacts harder than others being despite the same set of elements and reactions. Like how Wrio's punches do so little to freeze a hydro shield but kaeya's skill takes 2U chunks. I'm glad to have found this video to further my curiosity and actually learn what I've been picking up and noticing from playing the game.
Man, since raiden national rised in popularity I wondered how it didn't conflict between elements and be a funtional team, this clears that up and a lot of new dendro teams as well. Excellent video
Just wow. This was an amazing video. Thank you for making it. While I might not remember all of it at the end of the day, it definitely provides more insight why stuff happens and why certain teams are just incredible.
This is THE best video on elemental gauge theory I’ve ever seen and believe me I watch a lot of TC videos. Superb content and I can see that you actually put in a lot of work into making this! You have my respect!

I love your channel, it seems like nobody really covers nerdy mechanics stuffs of genshin (I didn’t even know stuffs like these existed, granted I’ve only been playing for a month)

Fantastic explanation, especially the use of visuals to help demonstrate. I can only imagine how much work this was to make, so I want to give credit where it's due.
I wonder if they actually had some practical use for ice bridges in mind in 2020 but scrapped it later on. Seems a bit too specific to be just a one-domain gimmick.
@@jeremiahsmith916 There's an island in Mondsatdt that can only (used to be) reacheable via ice bridging. Not sure if Kazuha plus Inazuma fan gadget or Xiao's skill made ice bridging obsolete.

your guides are entertaining, and make it easy to learn these things! i heard about the "gauge unit" thing and i tried looking it up but couldn't understand it, however this sort of visual learning makes it really easy to understand
this is why i always thought it was weird that people ragged on electro pre-dendro since it was a good element with strong mechanics allowing for multiple reactions and double swirling. characters like sucrose or kazuha being able to double swirl and boost the dmg of 2 elements and reduce the resistance is so strong, and we all know how popular raiden national is. i think lacking this knowledge beforehand made electro seem bad but with this knowledge now, i hope people realize how good it was BEFORE dendro and how much stronger it got with dendro.
Sir, I cannot thank you enough for this knowledge in a digestible form. I still do mean to read the majority of the kqm site's topic on Egt but this way I have a video to visually reinforce the knowledge 👍
Best explanation to date. Detailed, well paced, well organized and very clear. Appreciate the visuals and subtitles too. Added to personal library. Thx for this.
Also worth mentioning the 'a', 'b' and 'c' decay rates. 'A' comes from 1U attacks, 'B'=2U & 'C'=4U. 'A' decays the slowest overtime with the other two decaying faster ('B' decaying slower than 'C' obviously). If you try starting with a 2U attack and reapply with a 1U attack, the 'B' type decay will only be refreshed and wont decay slower due to an 'A' decay application being utilised. This means applying a 1U attack four times will actually last longer than a single 4U attack. Although they will consume the same costs from reactions it is usually not relevant and in practice only has a split second difference. [[Random additional comments below]] Sorry if this is a little hard to explain but thats the general gist of it and hope it gets pointed out somewhere or noticed. (Also fun side note there was actually an 8U attack source from using a skill in a limited event [supersense skill in day 5 of Fayz trials]) As always thanks for updating the new gauge unit theory with the introduction of dendro since I needed to be caught up with it. [[Edit note I also didn't realise that u missed out on this topic because of how long the vid was and I was about to ramble on about reaction limits but I'll leave this comment out anyways]]

Superb content and I can see that you actually put in a lot of work into making this! You have my respect!
I already knew the concept of some characters elements staying longer on enemies than others. And I also instinctively used a lot of combos shown in the video, but I never knew the real concept behind it and you explained it so easy and nice! I learned something new and that makes me happy 😊
I can physically feel my neurons establishing new interconnected networks after watching this video
I love your channel, it seems like nobody really covers nerdy mechanics stuffs of genshin (I didn’t even know stuffs like these existed, granted I’ve only been playing for a month)
Feels like I’m in a skillshare subscription. This shouldn’t be free.
Kinda off-topic but your comment single-handedly resolved my long-time wondering of “is it just me or are there just no high quality informational vids online anymore”. I guess all the talented educators just moved to paid platforms. I finally have a moral reason to spend on subscribing to these sources. Thanks, random stranger
yo amazing videos all around, we're all watching you on zajef stream right now, keep up the great work man
you actually explained this really well. I literally understood all of it, I may not remember a lot of it, but I did understand it during the first watch through
Excellent video, it gives knowledge to people who are new about EGT while also provide refreshers to the TC watchers. The visual aid is awesome
Thank you for the animated gauge graphics. Helps massively to move from knowing about gauge units to understanding them. Especially when it comes to the stupid elemental shields/armour xD
why go to school when we can get a phd in genshin
the visualization of the ticks are really really well done ty! hope this channel grows more
Thanks professor. I'm sending you my tuition check in the mail.
the visuals of how many remaining auras helps a ton. Thank you for making this video!
Fantastic explanation, especially the use of visuals to help demonstrate. I can only imagine how much work this was to make, so I want to give credit where it's due.
This is the sickest video ive ever watched wtf i learned so much and ill see my elements so much more differently now thanks
amazing explaination. 1 million subs by the end of this year i believe in you
So Kaeya really is made to be a bridge maker.
BTW, this island is NOT visible on the map but visible from the western cliffs of monstadt. Not sure if it's west of startsnatch cliff or the thousands wind temple.
@@ezurachan from starsnatch cliff, anemo resonance with amber or collei on full stamina makes it redundant. early game before maxing stamina though, kaeya is a good way to reach it.
@@ceci--lia oh... I only need the gliding passive and full stamina? I thought it would need Xiao, the feather gadget or Kazuha with anemo res. Granted I never tried it again after ice bridging years ago...
your guides are entertaining, and make it easy to learn these things! i heard about the "gauge unit" thing and i tried looking it up but couldn't understand it, however this sort of visual learning makes it really easy to understand
holy fuck THX! its so nice to get those really well explained videos about such complicated yet important parts of genshin
Thank you very much. This is exactly the kind of visual illustration i needed to understand these concepts
Even though i know most of the stuff, it's still fascinating to see them again. Thanks for amazing video
i just realized when kaeya does his burst there's a primogem shaped icicle on top of his head
this is why i always thought it was weird that people ragged on electro pre-dendro since it was a good element with strong mechanics allowing for multiple reactions and double swirling. characters like sucrose or kazuha being able to double swirl and boost the dmg of 2 elements and reduce the resistance is so strong, and we all know how popular raiden national is. i think lacking this knowledge beforehand made electro seem bad but with this knowledge now, i hope people realize how good it was BEFORE dendro and how much stronger it got with dendro.
man if you become a uni lecturer I am signing in, You are just too good.
That’s crazy. Not sure how you’re able to get so technical. The info is very much appreciated
This edition and explanation are so professional!:)) thank you very much
Wow, this is gold. Thank you! Visualization of auras helped a ton.
What an awesome video, thank you so much!! I have zero intention of ever using any of this info, but it was fascinating to learn about this stuff.
Just as i was waiting for this subject after your precedent video
The way you explain this are so good. Nice bro
This explanation was very clear and the visualizations were very helpful. Thank you for the video.
Bruh.. this is like.. what?.. How u make this GOD LEVEL explaining videos??
Feel nice to finally understand a bit of this type of detailed video of Genshin.
Thank you! This is what I've been looking for. Reactions always bugged me and this clears up everything.
This was so interesting if only math was this interesting in school.
[[Random additional comments below]]
Sorry if this is a little hard to explain but thats the general gist of it and hope it gets pointed out somewhere or noticed.
Bro that's awesome. Nice explanation!
I've read the concept of gauge theory before but didn't fully understand it. Your video helped a lot to visualise what the theories actually mean. Looking forward to the next one!
I wish all of my teachers explains like this
This is really well presented and with very clear examples and visuals! I think i still need to watch it two more times for everything to fully sink in, but it’s all very intuitively presented-fantastic work!
This was just fantastic. I was looking for this exact topic. Thank you!
Bro this is the best video on Genshin I've ever seen. Thank you.
Wow, this probably the first time i ever understand reactions and gauges and etc. Explaining well, the subscribe immediately. Haha. Nice video. More video until end games
Thank you for an amazing and informative video, the visual aids are incredibly helpful and you explained it all in a concise (concerning the full complexity of the topic at hand, I'd say this is concise) manner that feels approachable. Some videos that explain these more advanced topics tend to make me rewind several times to understand, but I only needed to rewind once to catch a visual aid.
Nice work on the sliders! Very helpful for understanding
its sad with the depth of the combat system, we only have the spiral abyss to play around in the end game
