"Sometimes doing the dumb thing is such a smart choice"
I love your conclusion.
That also explain why there's such a disconnection between the critics who hated the film and the public that applauded it.
"Doing the dumb thing is such a smart choice."
Amen. It shows confidence in letting the i.p. be itself and having fun with it instead of being too gritty for the sake of it.
Both the Sonic and Mario movies reminded me of why I liked those franchises as a kid.
Same here. Both movies were pure fun
Only applies to Mario for me, The Sonic I knew was a little more serious.
Mario it's Coke and Sonic it's Pepsi
I dunno, the Sonic franchise I grew up with didn't have obnoxious humor and wasn't a wannabe Marvel movie
@@gungaloscrungalo8925 he always had tude and if you watched the cartoon he was a chilli dog eating, wise cracking so and so.
It's honestly crazy how Paramount didn't get any Sonic songs aside from very few. Could you imagine if Crush 40 or Richard Jacques did the music to the Sonic movies?
We needed crush 40 in the movie so badly :((
@@zayzafy6969 OPEN YOUR HEART
Sonic Boom from Sonic CD would’ve been awesome to hear in the movies during action scenes
@@zayzafy6969 instead you guys got Wiz Khalifa, Bruno Mars and Kid Cudi lol.
Honestly that is my main complaint with the Sonic movies. I always tell people that the movies need more Crush 40
Our 90s kid selves would've have their minds blown, had they known about Mario & Sonic movies becoming this successful in this century!
Fellow 90s kid here and I agree! The Mario movie is exactly what I would've wanted as a kid back then, rather than what we got with the live action one
@@kdusel1991 Same. all those mario and sonic toys also. Wish i got these 2 movies and toys as a kid instead of what we got back then.
It's crazy to think that in 2014, Mario and Sonic were gonna get movies by the same company Sony. I'm glad both were made.
But they were never making Rachet and Clank, make sense
@@volvoman5262 they did make a ratchet and clank movie. In 2016
Although Paramount (who used to own Sega before the 80s) & Universal (who tried to sue Nintendo over DK) wound up making the Sonic duology & Mario movie, respectively! :D
Agree
@@TonyJenn i know, but not by sony
Nice to see the Mario and Sonic rivalry being reborn via the cinema
That makes one of us
Crossover movie when?
@@beauwalker9820 Mario and Sonic at the Olympic games movie.
Yes since the 90s wasnt a rivalry between them!!!
We have finally fully arrived into the 90s throwback nostalgia train.
I gotta be honest. Going from the real world into a fantasy world is way more interesting than someone going from a fantasy world into the real world, as far as movie ideas go.
That's like every anime from the last 5 years to now lol
It's the same
Granted, both are pretty cliche', as already pointed out, but both executed it well.
There is no "fantasy world" in Sonic.
Let's get that Captain N movie going.
Who would have thought that Sonic and Mario (not counting the 1993 movie) would get better video game adaptation than Assassin Creed, Halo, Uncharted and Resident Evil.
The 1993 Mario movie is and will always be the most amusing videogame movie ever made
And Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat
Nintendo😂
I would, since it's easier to make it work when they're animated characters that look exactly like in the game, even if they don't sound like them at all. I'm sure Sonic's performance would have suffered if they had gone with abominable original design.
I honestly really love what they did with the 1993 Mario movie. I feel like it gets judged unfairly. It had its problems, but I really respect the ambition, and I feel like much of it WAS realized -- it just wasn't necessarily what people were expecting or wanted.
Sure fit the bill for me, though, and I'm glad James here was as kind and respectful toward it in this video as he was.
I love these wholesome reviews where James talk about something he genuinely liked it
Same here.
I pretty much agree with all his points except when it comes to Seth Rogen. Casting Seth for this movie was truly an awful decision.
@@elgatofelix8917 I agree, definitely just a corporate decision to get a "popular celebrity guy" especially one that sounds very repetitive and sorta blahed out.
Idk, I thought he was fine as Donkey Kong
The Mario Movie’s soundtrack really went above and beyond. A few of the motifs were so quick and subtle that I didn’t even catch them until my second viewing.
Looking forward to 2nd viewing, loved all the easter eggs and nods
The music in Mario was incredible, literally transported you back
You mean where they literally just used copyrighted music with snippets of nostalgia track thrown in? Okay..
@@Sandman_Slim 😮
The sad part is that Sonic’s soundtracks in games slaps harder than any Mario game soundtrack will ever do, and it’s sad that they didn’t took the opportunity to reference them in the movie
Growing up, I am a huge Sonic fan. I prefer his movies but the Mario Bros movie is great in its own right.
I can appreciate the disclaimer at the beginning "I'm going to be biased". It definitely shines through, and I love just about everything Cinemassacre puts out ... That being said, almost all of these points came down to two factors "I like Mario more, so his bits were more nostalgic" and "Sonic was more realistic." Granted points were distributed between the two, but every point was based on those two things. I don't feel like this was a proper review at all.
What I thought was really cool with the music was the metal song they played was from Bowser's Fury, a game from 2021. Meaning, a game made while the movie was still in development! They referenced Mario games so old and new that they literally included a song from the absolute newest one to come out.
Both movies cover different, yet similar bases. Sonic has the more realistic, yet CGI approach and focused on a semi original tale. Mario is fully CGI and packed with references and focused on an alternate take of the games. Both are awesome!
The nostalgia of this video is at peak level. Not only for the sonic and Mario references , but it’s also a throwback to James’ snes vs sega Genesis video. I love it
Both are enjoyable they just need a slight bit of refinement before they're the best possible screen adaptations
How would you improve it?
@@meesteranonymous8177for sonic 3 they could easily branch away from humans for at least half the movie except for the necessary humans like eggman and the gun commander if they adapt SA2s story. Mario movie pacing was not great and could be improved.
@@sloth3046 I think the sonic 3 should have less references to modern pop culture and more jokes that are actually funny on their own. l
I find it freaking INSANE that the Mario movie made over 724 million dollars in a little over 2 weeks
It's going to make more than that. It's already guaranteed to cross 1 billion dollars. No video game film has ever made close to that much.
I was never gonna be surprised tbh. It's Illumination. They're incredibly smart with marketing, and most of their movies do phenomenal at the box office, with Minions (their biggest IP) totaling up to 1.1 billion
@@superduperm1 That argument has lost a lot of viability over the years. No video game movie ever had that big of an audience/market. It is not surprising that it made more than past movies. The sonic movies were pretty successful too.
It's $876.4 million worldwide now and soon it will be premiered in Japan and South Korea - they will have Golden Week (Hollyday) Nintendo is extremely smart! it will earn at least 200-300m there, 350-400m my prediction so it could make 1.1-1.2b maybe more

In addition to having more game music, “Fastest Thing Alive” from Sonic SatAM would be nice to have. Perhaps if there’s a third Sonic movie they’ll include that as a response to the SMBSS theme being in the Mario movie.
Crush 40 is apparently coming back for movie 3.
they're both great in their own rights I like this style of just comparing the two for fun rather than a way to say one is better than the other because they are completely different movies
Sonic and Mario fitted their stories game tones perfectly with a simple but entertaining story and a action packed story with a thriving narrative
All 3 movies in my personal opinion were great. I like that the Mario movie and the Sonic movies are very different from each other and it's great to see them do so well at the box office. Especially the Mario movie hitting currently over 700 million dollars! I'm more of a Sonic fan, but I'd be lying if I didn't have a big smile on my face throughout the Mario movie. It's so cool to see Nintendo and Sega making movies out of their IPs and doing very well with audiences.
It's a crime we didn't get any Crush 40 in the Sonic films.
you're that moderator from r/SonictheHedgehog who bans everyone who disagrees with the Sonails ship right? That ship between a 8 year old and a 16 year old? And you even drew said ship?
Mario was a better experience overall but Sonic was a better movie
Mario had easter eggs everywhere, while Sonic told a story
They're both amazing, but Mario definitely wins, as it's the most faithful to the games and the most fun.
Very true.
In that interpretation yes, but in terms of just viewing them as films, I'd say Sonic is objectively better because it has a strong narrative structure while Mario is very fast paced by comparison, but if I were to be subjective Mario beats Sonic 1 for me, and Mario beats Sonic 2 in terms of having a better wedding scene.
Nah, the Sonic movies are better to me, especially Sonic 2.
I think they were both great in different ways. Mario was full of references and Easter eggs, but it's story was simple and didn't differ much from most the games. Sonic didn't have as many in-your-face references, but it offers an original story for Sonic. The second Sonic movie has way more references, and the plot started to integrate more video game themes. Overall, I think the Sonic movies are the best live action video game movies, but Mario is the best animated one. I think it's great both can succeed since overall they are different types of films.
They're both pretty fun.
Been really happy to see some great video game movies with both of these and Detective Pikachu. On top of TV shows like Arcane and Last of Us, we've been getting some indredible video game adaptations. My dream one though would be a two-part Final Fantasy VI movie that's like a fusion of Dune and RRR.
7:05-7:08
Actually, most fans I knew were expecting Ryan Drummond, Jason Griffith or Roger Craig Smith.
Personally I prefer the Mario movie though I liked the Sonic movies too
15:25 Imagine a Metroid movie that's basically a lite action/horror that follows the storyline of the games with a few variations. I would absolutely be in the theater.

Just take the Capcom approach. Take whatever property, turn it into a Mega Man reskin with music from the original work, and people will love it.
I remember him talking about how he would hypothetically direct a Ninja Gaiden or Castlevania movie in a James and Mike Mondays episode.
Despite being more of a Sonic fan, the Mario movie brought me to tears at the theatre with how much love and attention was injected into it. Sure, 90% of the fun I had with the movie was seeing all the Easter eggs and seeing this world realized on the big screen, but it truly felt like a love letter to Mario’s 38 years of legacy and fandom.
Live and Learn should’ve played when Sonic went Super Sonic, like I understand they’re saving the adventure stuff for the 3rd movie but still it would’ve been so hype
Don't forget the Gusty Garden Galaxy music!
How I see it:
Mario Bros. = Better *_Video Game_* Movie
Sonic 1&2 = Better Video Game *_Movie_*
i agree tbh. i feel like this is the right take
Finally we can get the Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games movie we've all been waiting for
Mike Tyson should be getting a Punch Out movie going right about now.
This is genius but Nintendo would never do it.
@@nintendianajones64 not after Tysons allegations
Nintendo dropped the Mike Tyson branding a little bit after the game came out and changed it to Punch Out. It would never happen to feature Mike Tyson.

What was best about Mario Bros 2023 is how the accentuated and made the focus about the brotherly Mario & Luigi share.
16:01 - "Sometimes doing the dumb thing.....is such a smart choice." - James Rolfe
Truer words could never be said. Very well said, James. ✌
Like taxes?🙃
The fact the Mario movie used so much Mario music whereas the Sonic movies barely used Sonic music is a huge point for Mario.
Also the Sonic movies essentially are live-action retellings of Sonic X. (Only instead of the Thorndykes it’s the Wachowskis.) This is furthered by the fact the third movie will include everyone’s favorite spiny edge lord!
SONIC WINS
Though Chris could only wish he was Tom. As far as found human families go, the movies blow X out of the water.
I like both adaptations, but for me the Sonic movies win out because they build their own universe rather than just showing one we've all seen before. They're definitely not perfect and have a clear amount of studio/family film mandates, but they've also been getting much more faithful with each movie. Can't wait to see the third one!
Well, of course the Sonic movies feel more like they’re building their own universe, they got to have two movies with a third movie incoming meanwhile the Mario movie still only has one movie so far. Wait for the inevitable Mario movie sequel and you’ll see them building on the world like the Sonic movie is with it’s sequels.
How did you just give a better review than bimmy?
Family dynamics are much more interesting in the longterm as opposed to superhero stories.
Agreed 💯
My dream idea for Metroid would be a show styled after 80s/90s anime but told like Samurai Jack and Cowboy Bebop. That would be awesome if they did it right.
Actually and since we are on the subject of Samurai Jack? If to make it more hard hitting for a Metroid style animated TV series. Have Craig [hope that the guy who made Samurai jack] do the show and make it VERY atmospheric and let the environments speak for themselves,, similar to how he did that Caveman...I think I am thinking of the right one, that caveman style animated show he did. Where it was all atmospheric and allowed the environments tell the story with very little to no dialogue. It can work for the foreboding sense of story telling, while still keeping the feeling of Samus being the only one on the planet.
I think doing it this way would be a great way to do it. Something not quite anime but with that flavor.
@@Megamanexe you mean Genndy Tartakovsky. He would be my director of choice precisely for this reason.

Now all we need is a Bonk movie to represent the Turbografx 😝
That would be awesome !
If you saw the animated 80s Mario Movie from Japan, you know that Japan did it best from the get go.
Keep it within the Game World with a brief backstory to the main characters.
Took Hollywood 40 years to fully understand that.
"Sometimes, doing the dumb thing is such a smart choice."
I feel that's the mantra for Illumination, and what made them oddly perfect for Mario.
To be totally honest, the opening part of the Mario movie in Brooklyn was my favorite part! I would love to see more of their Brooklyn adventures in the sequel.
Nobody ever mentions the hand-animated Sonic movie, based on the cartoon from 1993.
there was never a movie like that
That wasn't a real movie. That was an OVA.
@@LoliconSamalik In 1999, the two episodes were combined and given an english dub. It was colloquially referred to as Sonic The Hedgehog: The Movie.
At least those old cartoons got Sonics design right.
I cannot help to gag when I see the new design.
@@enskje Why? Because the redesign is associated with Sega losing the console war? Or because of his attitude, whatever that means regarding Sonic.
Sonic & Mario are timeless. Would love SEGA to make a new console.
Still waiting for a Dreamcast 2 or something though
I'd love if Sega went back to making 16 bit games again, on a console that could play the old cartridges too.
Sammy (the company that bought SEGA in the early 2000s) probably has them busy making Pachinko machines.
What would be the point? Consoles are pretty much over at this point, it's not worth the investment in the same way a Sega Flashback plug-in console would (and did).
YEEEEESSSSS SIR, IF ONLY!!! I feel so hurt to think so far into such an idea, because it seems so impossibly farfetched!!!
I wonder if Rolfe knew who Chris Pratt was before this movie. He didn't know who Robert Pattinson was.
There was the Chris partt house hold and the Robert Pattinson household
Now that videogame movies are happening "the videogame was better" will be the new "the book was better"
the best thing here is that they stayed away from woke political ideology. No diversity, no mary sue, no whamen, no LGBT just plain old characters and simple stories
Mario having better music renditions in the cinema than Sonic is nuts when you consider just how iconic Sonic music is. Huge miss there. Hopefully in the third 🤞

I'm anticipating the novelization!
But would it dethrone Street Fighter: The Movie game as the best game based on a movie based on a game?
There’s no need, the movie is just a rollercoaster filled with bunches of Mario references, honestly I think a Sonic movie game would be better
Still haven’t seen this film since a lot has been going on lately, but it’s cool many people enjoy this film and it’s interesting to compare this film with the Sonic films. Really cool video James!
Go watch
I want a Castlevania live action
That would be incredible
Can't wait for the Smash Bros initiative
I wish the Mario movie ended with Princess Peach saying "you're not going to believe this."
and than say "i have tickets to Wrestlemania!"
XD
I was smiling throughout this whole film literally listing references in my head. Best video game type film I've seen since Ready Player One (Yes I know it's not a game lol)
I'm sure you know, this is 6 months later, but it's very posible that Charles Martinet last words dubbing anything related to Mario was "These are my boys!" and I was teary eyed at that moment, because it is SO apropiate that THAT's his retirment from voicing Mario. He is still involved with the saga, of course, but if his last dubbed sentence is really calling Mario and Luigi his sons... well, I just love it!
Brilliant as usual mate, cheers! If you can believe it, saw Mario in a theater on a military base, and when the credits rolled the whole theater applauded 😊
I been wondering why fans of Mario never mention the 80's anime movie, did it just never catch on?
I know its a long shot, but if done right I hope this could get us a Legend of Zelda move franchise, Metroid movie franchise, and my personal hope an earthbound movie.
ah yes, i'd love an earthbound movie
Earthbound PPPIIIFFFFFFHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA
A Zelda movie would be dope. I’m actually kind of surprised one hasn’t been made yet considering there’s like a thousand Zelda games and they always do well financially
And a Starfox movie franchise most of all.
Make Metroid child-friendly? I don't want to see. Show Metroid as a dark film, Nintendo won't allow it. Link would have to talk in the movie, won't work. Yes, Mario also speaks in the film, but in the game he also has a few snippets of dialogue, which was more imaginable.
I'd definitely be down for Zelda and Metroid movies with Nintendo at the helm...just not with Illumination as a partner. I think I'd like the idea of Nintendo partnering with different big animation studios. Like say, partnering with Studio Ghibli for Zelda or with Sony Animation for Punch Out or Aardman for Star Fox.
They are contracted with Universal. So they will likely go with anyone under that. Dreamwork could quite possibly do a Zelda/Metroid movie. Maybe perhaps Starfox would be best.
I think Universal needs to be smart about how to present the different film opportunities. Everything related to Mario should be cartoonish, but Metroid is more like Alien
Star Fox should have a hyper realistic yet cartoonish look. If that sounds contradictory just look at Rango
I noticed that too. I was sitting next to my wife in the theater and I was like, Woah! That's the theme from the super mario bros super show with Captain Lou Albano from when I was a kid! You'd have to be of my generation to get the reference.
What’s even better is even the generations who grew up with the N64 get a nice taste of the DK Rap song in the movie with Donkey Kong’s introduction! This movie is a big love letter to the fans of Mario. (Here’s hoping that the Kong Island becomes a real water park in the future.)
Sega movies can what Nintendon't.
This movie understands what cartoons and vidro games are all about, pure FUN.
I love vidros too
@@Sr.Anonimo-bk1uz Didn't notice the typo until now 😂
This guy is so genuine.
Pokemon, Mario, Sonic, all we need now is a Legend of Zelda movie. And maybe a grindhouse styled Duke Nukem for the adults.
Something cool about Charles Martinet's performance is that he voiced both of his characters in all languages.
Danny DeVito should have voiced Cranky Kong.
The Super Mario Bros movie does what the Mario games have always excelled in: Create a vibrant and fun experience that's light on story and characters. An experience for all ages.
While the Sonic movie has been doing what the Sonic games have always excelled in: A more intense action fuelled experience with an ever-branching list of characters, lore and themes (some work some don't) which has left a multitude of split Sonic groups but overall extremely dedicated fans.
I saw both Sonic 2 and Super Mario Bros. In the theater. They both blew my mind. They're just awesome movies and to compare them is difficult in my mind. I've loved Mario since I was a kid, though, so of course I'm biased towards it.
Loved the sonic movies. Still need to check out the Mario movie

Man, hearing you talk about these video game movies, I feel right at home. =D
Sonic 2 was my favorite of the three!
While I absolutely adore both Sonic and Mario as characters, I will always love Sonic way more. This being said, I seem to be one of the few people that thinks the Sonic movies were absolutely terrible, a disgrace to Sonic as a character and franchise. Mario's movie on the other hand was fantastic. It is everything the Sonic movie should have been. Fully animated, and a story that uses the already established games as the basis for the story while keeping it original. Sonic had none of that. It made things up left and right and had almost no influence from games and established lore. Mario easily takes the cake for me on this one.
I love the movies differently, but the same. If that makes sense.
I’m a Mario fan.
I’m a Sonic fan.
We exist.
The musical scores were actually mind boggling to me
At this rate, Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games might happen and it would be such a crossover, it would rival the MCU.
Dude, the trans Caitlyn Jenner would beat them both. Pls, I hope this movie will never be made 😢😅
I agree 100% about sonic's music. The snowboarding part had me so hyped and it didn't even play ice cap or hard times. I was let down.
Finally. Been waiting for this Cinemassacre review for awhile. Like Mario says
"LETS A GO" 😎
bruh
Jaleel White is more of what Classic Sonic would sound like.
Modern Sonic, I would have preferred if the movie Sonic was voiced by Roger Craig Smith :D
I wish a Sonic movie in the actuall Sonic world, like Mario's movie did.
I wish they didn't have the humans subplot.
Sonic's world is the earth in the games, they sepparated it in two in the movie

I would love a Mega Man movie. I was more of a Mega Man fan than a Mario fan yes I did play the games but Mega Man was my hero as a kid hopefully this Mario movie will cause a Mega Man movie to finally get made.
YESSSSSS!!!
I think there was a Megaman movie in production a few years ago, but there hasn't been any news about it recently. There were talks about it being like action, which imo is a shame cuz a franchise like Megaman would work way better as an animation.
