My fondest memory of the show was actually learning that Captain Lou Albano lived right around the corner from my grandmother, which is where I used to watch this show a lot when I was a kid.
It was weird yes but its quite clear everyone who worked on it loved working on it just looking up how proud both Danny wells and Lou Albano were after it ended shows that even if the show wasn't great or like the games they still put in the love, time and effort to make the show entertaining for kids while still making sure kids learned something from the series. These guys next to Charles Marinette are probably the best actors to have played the duo
Yup, even the weirdest shows back then was made with a lot of love, by the people behind it and the PSAs were always a thing back then, they weren't bad, like most people made them out to be, because of the times back then, kids needed to hear em.
FUN FACT: Robert Remus AKA Sgt. Slaughter was under investigation by the US Marine Corp when filming his live action segments commenced. Remus himself never served in the military. He received several draft deferments and actually opposed the war, often protesting and demonstrating within the antiwar movement. This has caused controversy because, at times, Remus has talked about military service while seeming to be speaking as himself, and not in character. This has led to accusations of cowardice and stolen valor.
Agreed, I still remember the Indiana Jones episode where there was a character that didn't have a face and everyone just acts like its completely normal.
_Super Mario Bros Supershow_ is maybe cheesy and wacky at best, but Captain Lou Albano and Danny Wells are already plumbing up their game on the roles as the live-action Mario and Luigi, which makes the show memorable.

This show was a lot of fun. We didn't have much in the way of lore or backstory back then so my friends and I would watch this and make up our own further adventures at recess. I think that's probably why I loved the live action movie, it wasn't that much different from the stuff my friends and I invented.
God, I remember watching the DVD sets for this cartoon so much that the discs were practically unusable for scratched they were from use. Also, the live action bits creeped me out back then for some reason.
My mom would throw this on a lot when I was home sick as a kid considering she grew up in the 80's. Definitely a weird show, but a memorable one! Thank you for the constantly stellar content, man! Say, could you review Shredderman sometime? I kid, I kid. I'm going to wait a LONG while before bothering you with a request again. 😅
I feel instantly old the moment this show is ever brought up. I do still have a soft spot for it but I think this is a series that deserves to live rent free in my nostalgia.
Facts: in 1990, Club Mario replaced the live action Mario & Luigi segments in reruns on the Super Mario Bros. Super Show rather than being its own program and the Anti Drug PSA with Lou Albano (where he says "You'll go to Hell before you die.") was broadcasted on Philly 57, a channel that is now my local CW affiliate.
5:58 my boyfriend recently found the "do the Mario song" and we always watch Lou/mario dancing and singing for a little laugh. My bf says that Lou was drunk while filming that, and if you watch closely at the end you can see Lou stumble forward a bit as he loses balance while striking his final pose. It is hilarious!!!
I absolutely ADORE TSMBSS, no matter how cheesy it is. I remember discovering it on Netflix many years ago, and I fell in love with it. I soon later discovered that there were 2 more Mario cartoons after stumbling onto them on RUclips, and while I enjoy them as well, I'll always love the first cartoon. Not to mention, the cartoon invented Luigi's timidness and made Peach a bit more proactive rather than just being the damsel in distress. Plus, Hooked On The Brothers and Do The Mario are certified bops lol
I was the biggest Mario fan when I was like 5 in the late 90's. My uncle told me there was a TV show! I managed to get a hold of a single VHS tape of the show and would watch it over and over. I know it's not the best but it is extremely nostalgic to me
One of the DVD collections of this show was the first movie I ever bought for myself. I was maybe 7 or 8? It's such a staple of my childhood, and the mario rap is forever embedded in my brain
I loved the show back when I was a kid and I still do today. I watched it back when it first aired. I remember that day; I'd usually watch Happy Days around lunch time, but I decided to channel surf a bit and found this show! I was already a Mario fan at the time, so finding this show was the coolest thing ever! Later that year, I actually got to meet Captain Lou as well. I still have the photograph that I took with him.
The Super Show and Captain N are in the realm where they're so bad its good and I still love them to this day. Plus Captain Lou Albano is just a class act and treasure who died too soon while not being given enough credit to how he merged all forms of entertainment into the realms of Music, TV, Wrestling, and Video Games which makes him a very unsung visionary to me.
I remember watching this show as a kid and really liking it! To me, Lou Albano is the quintessential voice of Mario, with Bob Hoskins second. I grew apart from video games around the N64 era, so Charles Martinet never had a chance to grow on me. Back to this show, though, I've got lots of fond memories of it! I remember really loving how they expanded not only the SMB1 and 2 worlds, but also went to many imaginative places with their parodies and homages. It really fired up my imagination, and made me wonder what all other kinds of situations and adventures Mario could be a part of. As an adult, though, I've learned to be content with my memories of my experiences and imagination of the time, and not have that be sullied by clinical detachments of the show in a bingeable archive format, so I'm not going to rewatch it. There's a lot of other cartoons that I had similar fond memories of but rewatching as an adult showed they don't hold up to modern standards and probably didn't hold up to contemporary standards either, but it was for kids with bright colors and toys so I still respect them for hitting their audience.
I was in high school when these aired, couldn't watch them at first due to the time they aired here in the area of the US where I live, 5 freaking AM, I didn't wake up for school till 5:45 AM. Finally they moved the show to around 2:30 PM, and by that time, I was home, and able to finally watch all 52 episodes of Mario, and all 13 Zelda episodes. Years later I'd buy a bootleg DVD with just the animation parts, still have both discs, the quality on them quite bad. My sister did buy me a DVD within the last few years that has some of the episodes on them, but I can watch them all anyway either here, or somewhere else. Absolutely loved the show, was bummed Lou Albano and Danny Wells weren't called upon to do the SMB 3 and Super Mario World cartoons, despite both shows still being under the DiC banner.
it was weird, but i loved it as a kid, it captured Mario's Essence in the cartoon segments and the live action was a nice break in the action. also, name another cartoon show that encouraged you to dance, you'd be hard pressed to come up with an answer. now... DO THE MARIOOOO!
Let's not forget the two sequel series; Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World. While shorter in run, they did explore some new territory.
You ever seen Kirby Right Back At Ya? A solid anime adaptation that takes its own creative liberties. While outdated in terms of character representation, like DDDs redemption arc in the games, it’s a meme worthy, entertaining ride I’d love to see a video on.
9:12 Princess Peach/Toadstool in that Quicksand Pit was the highlight of the series for me. I imagined myself wanting to save her from that Quicksand Pit quite often when I was a kid, because I wanted to be like Mario and Link saving girls from perils like that.
I have so much nostalgia for this show. This show is also older than me but I watched it on Netflix as a kid. As a kid the animation was by far my favorite but returning to it I agree the live-action is more entertaining.
for how weird this show and how much it relies on pop culture for most of it's plots, I love rewatching these cartoons and see them as a time capsule of when Mario was only a niche thing that a couple of circles of communities know about. yes, it is cheaply made, but there's clearly a labour of love put into every episode and skit, you can't help but smile
I would honestly like to watch a video on that Double Dragon cartoon I remember watching it Sunday mornings as a kid and remembering it was pretty bonkers
6:48 - this is a good example of how the show would mimic things we saw in the games. This shot (logs falling thru water) in particular is like several stages in SMB2 for example, and they used other elements from the games into how they executed the show, so it really connected with the gamers (maybe because the structure of source to adaptation was streamlined or something along those lines).
My favorite gag in the animated parts of the super mario series was a space episode where the Legend of Zelda music would be played and King Koopa called "horrible noise"
sounds basicly like the mario version of "Adventures of sonic the hedgehog" where too "fun" comes first and logic so distantly second it orbits a different star
The Zelda show was pretty bad, but it was always entertaining. It ultimately got us The Legend Of Beavis too, so how could I not love it? I don't think it was part of Super Show but I've had one of the episodes of the Mario 3 cartoon stuck in my head for years. Mario and Luigi have a fight, one goes into the rain and forgets his frog suit. Weird stuff.
I love this show! It feels very nostalgic and I'm a 2000's kid. The jokes, while corny work well with the show. This cartoon reflects that Era of animated kids shows and I love that. I'd say it's fine just the way it is!
I remember all the fun memories I had watching the show on RUclips with my brother. It a was weird but a Fun time and I really loved the portrayal of Mario and Luigi brotherly dynamic
Man, I’m old. Because I watched these when they aired and had copyrighted music that was cut out in reruns. Also Jordan, look up the short run of comics made by Valiant. You’ll love it.

I mean king koopa is completely green and looks more like king k rool and wart but wart is an amphibian Whereas bowser has red hair a yellow face and limbs.
The best thing about the Super Mario Bros Super Show in my opinion were the cartoon segments. I loved hearing the music and sound effects from the games utilized in the cartoon. The live action segments were ok, but I found them to be a bit too silly and sometimes annoying probably because I was 11 years old and over zany style humor is geared towards younger kids. Also, Lou was too tall, and his long curly hair made it difficult for me to accept him as Mario however his voice fit perfectly in the animation. Anyway, I consider myself fortunate to be a 1980s kid who experienced Nintendo at the height of its popularity. This show is a nostalgic gem that hasn't lost its charm after all these years.
I grew up watching this live in the 80s and 90s and found a dvd box set of all the Suoer Mario Supershow episodes at Software Etc. in 2005/2006 for like $5. Best purchase ever.
From what I understand, the original Super Mario Bros movie was more based on this show than the games, in the similar way that Tim Burton's Batman is to the Adam West TV show. That was the approach, at least, but it didn't exactly came out at a good time with its competition. I'm happy we now have the better version, but still, I love that wierd movie.
Hey Jordan, thanks for all the dope vid! Not sure if you are a podcast guy but "wizard and the bruiser" (a deep dive on culture and video games) as well as all the LPN network might be a worthwhile check!!
I grew up with this show and loved it. I still have my old VHS tape that I would watch nonstop. When I think Mario and Luigi's voice I always think of Capt Lou and Danny Wells first. I miss Luigi being a smart ass all time.
I remember hearing kids who watched vhs tapes of this show back in something like the 3rd or 4th grade. I had no idea what they were talking about at the time. I was only 2 years old when the super mario bros super show was on tv way back in 89. I didn't actually get to see it till I was in high school.
i liked the live action segments and how they used the video game music in the outro and intro shots, i liked the design of the animated characters and i think they used that design for the mcd happymeal toys and also figures that were available in some toy stores.
I remember watching this show every weekday afternoon when I got home from school. I was 10 years old at the time. I loved every bit of it, but I really loved the Friday shows because not only I looked forward to the weekend but I also get to watch the latest Zelda episode that they anticipated all week.
I never liked the live-action part of this show, which is why i prefer the sequel shows SMB3 and Super Mario World, which were just cartoon (and got better voice actors).
I first remember watching this at a friends house at a sleepover in the morning, but it was during the last couple minutes. I would find it again on Netflix a few months later, and it was enjoyable.
I just found ya through my reccomendations. I have very fond memories bumping into this gem of a show back in the 90's on it's re-run era back then. I was a huge fan of the live action segments a bit more over the cartoon segments. I was hoping they would collab and do a whole half hour live action segment show at some point down the road. Not realizing it was a one off deal. it would've been neat though. :)
I LOVED this show! And even though it was campy as hell, it was sooo good to watch TMNT AND this back to back everyday after I’d get home from school. 😊😊 A weird time capsule but such a fun part of my childhood! Do the Mario!! 😊😊 And of course LOVED the Zelda on Friday’s! “Excuuuuse me Princess” So cringe and so good! 😂😂
Cringe is right. I HATED Zelda (the character), I hated what they did to her! You can be independent and be kind too, ya know! I just wanted het to be left to Gannon till she could learn some humility.
I had a short lived Mario phase growing up and had a dvd with some super show episodes on it. Weirdly though, is the fact the dvd didn’t include the live action segments so imagine my confusion when the credits rolled and some guy in a Mario costume started dancing.
The show is slightly older than me, but I got to watch it on TV in a slot that was split with the Super Mario World show (they cut out the live-action stuff to make it work). When I found the Super Show on DVD, I pounced, and it has been a long stretch of nostalgia ever since. My favorite bit from the animation was the episode where they built a plane using magic carpets, specifically when they take off with Luigi at the controls: Mario: "Hey Luigi, we're flying upside down!" Luigi: "We are? No wonder I don't wanna look!"
I was from the Super Mario 64 era and got a DVD or CD of DIC shows in a cereal box. One episode of Mario was the biggest tease in the era of N64/Gamecube. I remember reading about it on forums since youtube and the internet were not established yet.
The Super Show was Peak Television, it still competes with modern Anime it's that good. And when Toad becomes the Toad Warrior? Toad inspired Fist of the North Star, it's full-circle.🧐
Great video! Now you probably don't remember me, but back in October 2017 you did a livestream where you reacted to other RUclips channels and I was the last one you checked out. It was a video of me playing Super Mario Odyssey at Best Buy before the game came out. Back then my channel was called ZeldaInferno and I had only 50 subscribers. Now I focus on making videos about indie animation and I'm on track to hitting 5,000 subscribers. I like to think you helped me to really give me the push I needed. Keep up the great work!
Thanks so much for watching! Do you have any fond memories of this show? What other Video Game Cartoons do you enjoy?
Donkey Kong country show (best show ever made)
For me I literally found episodes on RUclips 😂
Again Phelous introduced the show to me (I didn’t exist in the 80’s or most of the 90’s)
Actually I think Redhead Princess Peach looks Awesome
Bro you're too slick with it. Timing meta AF
This show has a lot of color palette swap moments that stick out so much that I'll never forget this wacky lovable show

@@PedroBenolielBonito You're thinking of Bob Hoskins who played Mario in the 1993 movie.

It's for the best that Metroid show didn't happen considering that DiC didn't know Samus was a woman.
i love this show i will always enjoy it
I remember watching the cartoon, but I don't remember the live action bits. It must have been cut when aired here in Botswana
You just had to be there. This show was amazing!
Talk about the Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach anime movie.
This cartoon really is memorable for both the memes and the cartoon in general
Hey Jordan, thanks for all the dope vid!
Not sure if you are a podcast guy but "wizard and the bruiser" (a deep dive on culture and video games) as well as all the LPN network might be a worthwhile check!!
“I’ll have a Milk!”
My stepmom actually had some of the dvds of this show for my stepbros and I would periodically watch them with them. I really liked them.
My innocent 5 yr old mind was not “weird” for getting a giggle out of “dic” !
I think it’s perfect that you put the ads right at the “we’ll be back” segments
i liked the live action segments and how they used the video game music in the outro and intro shots, i liked the design of the animated characters and i think they used that design for the mcd happymeal toys and also figures that were available in some toy stores.
I remember watching this show every weekday afternoon when I got home from school. I was 10 years old at the time. I loved every bit of it, but I really loved the Friday shows because not only I looked forward to the weekend but I also get to watch the latest Zelda episode that they anticipated all week.
I love your channel! Keep up the awesome work!
I watch this as I go to bed, every night, no joke.
I remember the commercials for the show that had mario giving us life lessons about smoking weed good times.
still think this show has better voice acting than the super mario bros movie
If you were a kid in the 80s you LOVED this show.
I LOVED this show! And even though it was campy as hell, it was sooo good to watch TMNT AND this back to back everyday after I’d get home from school. 😊😊 A weird time capsule but such a fun part of my childhood! Do the Mario!! 😊😊
And of course LOVED the Zelda on Friday’s!
My favorite bit from the animation was the episode where they built a plane using magic carpets, specifically when they take off with Luigi at the controls:
Mario: "Hey Luigi, we're flying upside down!"
Luigi: "We are? No wonder I don't wanna look!"
had some episodes of the super show on dvd as a kid would watch then a lot before going to bed i have a lot of nostalgia for it
"You have a little spaghetti on your overalls"
"Well F%&$ YOU, Luigi!"
I was from the Super Mario 64 era and got a DVD or CD of DIC shows in a cereal box. One episode of Mario was the biggest tease in the era of N64/Gamecube. I remember reading about it on forums since youtube and the internet were not established yet.
If the Boomerang Channel has taught me anything EVERY 80's cartoon looked cheap.... I'm assuming its from the change from hand drawn to earliest cgi.
The Super Show was Peak Television, it still competes with modern Anime it's that good.
And when Toad becomes the Toad Warrior? Toad inspired Fist of the North Star, it's full-circle.🧐
The anime part was so much comfy, it's part of my childhood. We didn't have the live action part in my country, only the animated part.
Thank you for making this video. 🔥🔥🔥
Mario telling me I was going to Hell was the highlight of my life
Great video!
