when i was 9, i was obsessed w/ super mario to the point i asked my parents for plushes of ALL the characters & enemies for my 10th birthday. this resulted in my parents indeed getting plushes of most chars & enemies, but here's the thing: almost none of them were official. wiggler, chain chomp, bowser, goomba, paratroopa, koopa troopa, you name an enemy, i had a plush of it on the kitchen table for my 10th birthday. there were like 45 in total. but most were bootlegs from ebay. i still played with them & enjoyed them anyway. but. my favorite, & the one i've kept after so long, even after we sold/gave away all the plushes, was a green yoshi. i've had him since that time, it's been about 8 years now. this whole time, i thought he was official. this video just revealed to me he's a bootleg. this yoshi has been with me across the usa, to disneyland, the grand canyon, los angeles, disney world, & now i'm finding out he was merely a cheap copy for easy cash.
So about SigurdHosenfeld (the artist behind that one Peach drawing that would be used on a bootleg), I recently found out he lost a battle with cancer and passed away in 2016. May he rest in peace.

locally, we have a towing company named mario's. this company has been here for over 30 years, and they have nothing to do with super mario. but I do remember at one point, we had a towing company nammed luigi's, and it had a bootleg luigi on the truck insulting mario's.

I would rather spend money on the official thing so that the profits are seen by the original creators, however, it still stands that there's not always official merchandise of the character/item I want to buy, and even if there is, it could be limited edition and very difficult to get a hold of (or too expensive for my budget).
Like Patmac said, bootleggers are making plushes and figures that most fans want that Nintendo will probably never do. And honestly most of them are really unique especially if it is a bootleg that King Koopa plush looks Great!
I lived nearby the Dr. Amigo office and I believe its been there since 2010. While it does make sense that they would change their logo in fear of Nintendo coming after them, I think they were just tired of trolls leaving 1star reviews and making Mario related jokes on all of their social media.

Looking at their site, they look like a really legit business catering to the Spanish speaking population in Houston. Which I’ve found is not really common in this part of the state. Most Spanish speaking oriented businesses in Texas are farther south, so this is actually a great business idea, just poor branding

Hot Sauce Hysteria I feel like Joel ruined every bit of the official side of Felix the Cat's reputation as a franchise, although it was always small. Whenever you look at a comments section for an official Felix video or anything Felix The Cat unrelated to bootlegs, there's a high chance the comments sections will feature a ton of morons saying HET in reference to Joel. This is why I despise Vinesauce. I'm no Felix super-fun, I've also only heard of Felix through the Het community, but the thing is, most people only know Felix as this Het thing who tears his face. I know that Felix The Cat actually is, a kid cartoon franchise similar to the old Micky Mouse ones, though minus all the popularity.

In Venezuela, I remember living very close to a Pizzeria in Maracaibo where they had Mario characters on the walls, hand drawn. They actually weren’t too shabby. The pizzeria itself was actually named just Mario Bros, with Mario and Luigi from MKDD on the banner. The best part? They specialized in mushrooms, whether it was pizzas or just toppings. Not sure if they’re still operating to this day, but I remember them cuz their pizzas were great :)

Down here in Britain there’s a chain of pizzerias called Mario’s pizza and burgers. It’s logo is paper Luigi holding a pizza up high and paper Mario in his battle pose holding a burger. Ngl they do good pizza

When you were talking about fan work at the end, I wish you had talked about the Grand Dad fan game- a game mechanically based on The Flintstones: Rescue if Dino and Hoppy and inspired by the infamous 7 Grand Dad bootleg game, but built from the ground up to be a love letter to bootleg video games. You even get to play boss battles against other bootlegs brought up in this video including Somari and Felix the Cat for the genesis. It’s free on game jolt and I highly recommend the game, aside from being a tribute to video game bootlegs in general it’s genuinely a lot of fun.

That gave me a good laugh at the time, I'm glad that was in this video. As a russian, i can say the popularity of bootleg consoles is VERY accurate. EVERY store that i went to, that sells electronics, always has either orange cartridges, or consoles with the box art saying "500 16 bit and 8 bit games included!!!". I even have one of these along with my nintendo switch and ps3 lol.
Chinatown is the best for getting bootlegs. I got some bootleg Pokemon figures which looked pretty cool. They were little figures of the Gen 6 starters that you would get inside a plastic poke ball, so you wouldn't know which one you'd be getting. None of the poke balls were the classic red though, just white bottom with random color on the top, so I got a purple one and a green one, to represent the Master Ball and the Safari Ball. I got Froakie and one of the two different kinds of Pikachus you could get. Pretty nice

Bootleg doesn’t always mean bad. Some unofficial plushes and similar products can be really good. It’s just that most are terrible. I used to collect bootleg Pokémon figures from a liquor store. They at most have 2 colours and never in the right places. I love them.
A few weeks ago, I saw some action figures in the window of a store in my neighborhood. It had action figures of Mario, Luigi, Diddy Kong, Wario, and I think some others. It was branded simply as "Super". There was no Nintendo logo, so, definitely no copyright infringement.

I used to work in the art department at an ad magazine, there were multiple local pizza joints with Mario traces and recolors for their mascots. It was hilarious. One also stole another's slogan - "The last honest pizza." The irony, like the curve of the Earth, was just too big for them to see.

The fact a Wario drug exists and is the shape of him is so fucking cursed. Not only would it fit his character perfectly but it's also just absolutely hilarious someone out there had the idea to do that and it makes you immediately overdose.

I would rather spend money on the official thing so that the profits are seen by the original creators, however, it still stands that there's not always official merchandise of the character/item I want to buy, and even if there is, it could be limited edition and very difficult to get a hold of (or too expensive for my budget).

I lived nearby the Dr. Amigo office and I believe its been there since 2010. While it does make sense that they would change their logo in fear of Nintendo coming after them, I think they were just tired of trolls leaving 1star reviews and making Mario related jokes on all of their social media.

Looking at their site, they look like a really legit business catering to the Spanish speaking population in Houston. Which I’ve found is not really common in this part of the state. In Venezuela, I remember living very close to a Pizzeria in Maracaibo where they had Mario characters on the walls, hand drawn. They actually weren’t too shabby. The pizzeria itself was actually named just Mario Bros, with Mario and Luigi from MKDD on the banner. The best part? They specialized in mushrooms, whether it was pizzas or just toppings. Not sure if they’re still operating to this day, but I remember them cuz their pizzas were great :)

When you were talking about fan work at the end, I wish you had talked about the Grand Dad fan game- a game mechanically based on The Flintstones: Rescue if Dino and Hoppy and inspired by the infamous 7 Grand Dad bootleg game, but built from the ground up to be a love letter to bootleg video games. You even get to play boss battles against other bootlegs brought up in this video including Somari and Felix the Cat for the genesis. It’s free on game jolt and I highly recommend the game, aside from being a tribute to video game bootlegs in general it’s genuinely a lot of fun.

Fair play to Dr. Amigo. I mean, he got away with it for years, then got out the generics before Nintendo came knocking. As a Drs. office, it must have something going for it to still have enough patients to stay in business. On saying that, the whole Amigo part was far more interesting than I thought it would be.

As a russian, i can say the popularity of bootleg consoles is VERY accurate. EVERY store that i went to, that sells electronics, always has either orange cartridges, or consoles with the box art saying "500 16 bit and 8 bit games included!!!". Chinatown is the best for getting bootlegs. I got some bootleg Pokemon figures which looked pretty cool. They were little figures of the Gen 6 starters that you would get inside a plastic poke ball, so you wouldn't know which one you'd be getting. None of the poke balls were the classic red though, just white bottom with random color on the top, so I got a purple one and a green one, to represent the Master Ball and the Safari Ball. I got Froakie and one of the two different kinds of Pikachus you could get. Pretty nice

A few weeks ago, I saw some action figures in the window of a store in my neighborhood. It had action figures of Mario, Luigi, Diddy Kong, Wario, and I think some others. It was branded simply as "Super". There was no Nintendo logo, so, definitely no copyright infringement.

Fun fact: There was a food truck burger business near my house called "Burger Kong", which had the famous Donkey Kong thumbs up render painted on it with a spatula on his thumbs up hand. It was also painted in black with the classic Donkey Kong beams from the arcade as a background (although in a green color scheme).
Sadly, I never managed to take a photo of it, and it's not longer there...
