Bun ki Baat | Irani Bakeries and Cafes of South Bombay
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 27 мар 2019
- 'Bun Ki Baat' is the story of the Irani bakeries and cafes of South Bombay. It is also the story of the men behind the counters and that of a rich Indo-Iranian Heritage. Bun Ki Baat is the story of generational conflict and how changing times and changing preferences have led to the decline in the condition of these iconic Irani cafes.
Shot, Produced and Edited by the Xavier Institute of Communications, Mumbai: All Rights Reserved.
If you want to read more about these bakeries and the men who ran it, you might want to check out this piece where I write about it in detail: adityaworah.in/bombay-irani-bakery-cafe/
Look at these lovely people. They came from outside and they became one of us.They are more Indian than any of us India will remain indebted to you.
Thank you Hindu people for making us welcome and loved in India.. we will always remain loyal Indians

This documentary is an award winning documentary it has all in it.
The art,the sentiment, the culture, the purpose and the reality of life and time that Time changes everything.
I hope thier culture and families and thier businesses survive the strong winds of Time.
Keep Baking .
The owner of Byculla bakery died .
He was a simple man whose aim was to serve best quality food to everyone in any situation even at low costs and to continue the tradition of parsi food with old and antique touch to preserve culture .
Rip sir....
I got tears in my eyes, what a lovely documentary, I have grown up eating here whenever my father used to take us to South Bombay during Ganpati festival.
Sassanian cafe owner was so unhappy with the current situation, parsi's are the most peaceful people, they're fun and had given us our very fav Mawa cake, please help them stay.
Only a true Mumbaikar will understand their feelings.

That Sassanian Uncle.
His eyes when he said he had a sentiment, he is barely surviving:(
Big joKe. Idiot he is. Prawn pulao is 950 rs, fish fry is 900Each person pays no less than 1500-2000. And always full. Moreover he takes only cash. Full black money. Bankchor!!

These irani restaurants are legendary. Yo just can't compare them with modern day restaurants. In these restaurants you get a feeling of 19th century.
My favourite is brun maska bread and chai. Also egg omllet with bread since last 66 yrs.when I was 4 yrs old.with all memories of my dad.
Kayani & Co irani cafe mumbai honest review...
Let me tell you guys..this is one of the worst cafes running in mumbai by their" Old time's name"
1) Food is very average.Nothing special in taste.
2)Waiters are disinterested.even they are not ready to take the order.
3) they have list of rules like they are paying us for eating
4) Hand wash area and surrounding is very unhygienic.over all the cafe looks very dirty( even not painted)
5) they only accept cash..not even card.
6) serving food in disposable plate.
7)The manager is very rude and they are not customer friendly.
I really regret about the visit to this cafe.it really hurts when people behave rudely. Disheartened.very pathetic experience.
You can see the same experiences in google review ..thank you..guys
It reminds me Iranian cafe and Restaurants in Karachi's Saddar and Garden areas exactly in same fashion. I am in North America now but this program has taken me in the memory lane of old days. Thanks for uploading.
Also same here are those cafes still there in Karachi
Yazdani bakery's apple pie is just amazing.... Infact there all items are too good... These Irani cafes are just more than a restaurant....I was a frequent visitor of Yazdani during my Bombay days and boy the conversation I used to have with the owner was out of this world... You're served food with compassion at these eateries...
These masala alu bun , puffs , irani chai are my daily breakfast . Good job team for covering the story
thank you :)
Two of these legendary Irani-cafewalas have since passed away. Mr Boman Kohinoor of the Britannia Bakery passed away in September 2019 and Mr Darius Ferzandi of the Byculla Bakery passed away in May 2020. RIP :(
Om Shanti
💐💐🙏🙏
As someone who stayed in Mumbai for 10 years...I worked as a sales manager...so these cafes were absolute favourites!!especially after a long day in field....this video brings back so many memories...makes me hungry 😄 ...great background music
From past 18 odd years me n my friends occasionally go to the first place shown in this video
which is in Byculla east. I also go to Yezdani bakery from year 2001...this video is sheer nostalgia. I hope these places keep running.
you & others need to keep going to keep them running
@@Enemji yes, most certainly! Call me old school, but m real fan of such places which depicts spirit of "Bombay". I like to relive the nostalgia through visiting such places.
Yogesh Padwal - Thank you. There should be some effort made to showcase these cafe and popularize them. Facebooks, Instagrams, etc.
Rather than going to these places people are helping food corporations like KFC,MCD etc... Go eat here help out our citizens.
very good videography..Irani hotel is Rock all the time ...I am just simply loving it..bun maska n Irani tea it's deadly combination...feels like heaven
We youngsters love irani cafe sir great respect 🙏
Dump Mc Donalds and go to these places

many Iranian Restaurants have been shut down in Karachi too. I was very fond of eating at Iranian Restaurants when I was in college. Extraordinary service, neat and clean waiters, delicious food and above all wonderful environment. I miss those restaurants a lot.
Beautiful story amazing soulful music voice on the background was superb loving watching your short documentary on Iranis love from punjab
AFTER A VERY LONG TI ME I HEAR VERY LISTENABLE MUSIC. VERY NICE VIDEO.
thank you :)
Cafes serving food of an identity culture are gems and should be valued in each community. Otherwise the world becomes just a mono consumers culture
Boman kohinoor the owner is no more

A very intimate and evocative story of Irani Cafes in mumbai !!
Will come one day and enjoy all these foods. Will sit with these lovely people and have lovely conversation. A dream of mine Will come true.... love from Karachi
These cafes were the highlight on my trip to Mumbai. I loved the Yazdani Bakery! Amazing bun maska and chai. Other favourites were B. Merwan & Co. and Kyani & Co. I tried to visit as many as I could when I was there. Lovely video, but so sad to hear they are dying out.
Very well portrayed. The true essence - like the man dipping his Khari biscuit in Chai, or Milk Bread Load being wrapped impeccably is just gorgeous! As the next gen, we need to keep these traditions alive.
Please don't close down these iconic places they are part of Mumbai's great past they should be cherished and valued and maintained above all!!God bless them all!!
These little cafes and bakeries should try and thrive and it is really upto the present generation to pick them over the modern franchises. It's in these little cafes and shops that you find the most authentic, man made delicacies that also define a region and it's people. Same goes with Kolkata (if you ever plan to make a similar video there). There are numerous age old ''Mishthanna Bhandar'' that make traditional sweets and savouries like no one else. We as a generation should pass on few things to our kids, like the habit of going all the way to these shops and buying from them..we should instill the taste and sentiments in our future generation! Thanks for this video!
Very nicely said Riya.
This video reminds those 90's documenteries..old heritage cultures and legacies should be preserved and carried forward..
Very nice documentary.. lovely film...Plz keep it up... Waiting for more dear...
thank you :)
The Irani cafes mostly in Mumbai I would think is a great place for people to connect...support them as these enterprises bring in tradition which we are losing today.
Sahebji,I wish u all the best, I grew up, with parsis.very good hearted, it’s too sad, they slowly disappearing.they r the best people in India. I live in Canada for last 34 years, and missing all this dishes.
Thousands parsis in canada look for them
My gosh ! I grew up on that byculla parsi Restuarant ! Miss those simple days ❤️😊👍🏼
True Bombay we love and miss
And I want to eat Pakistani food...
@sheh hocane .. u know na its not possible now..
I like the beautiful broad smile of that Uncle when one of the customers said Who will be there after him. His sons are all millioners in Canada. I don't know to make all these. I am a baniya. Very sweet people. God bless.
This is shot so well. Love the background score. Awesome stuff!
Brilliant documentary!!!!
Recently on my trip to Mumbai from Bangalore. I happened to visit Kyani and B.Merwan (legendary outlets). And trust me the MAWA CAKE was just out of the World. It was so yummy I packed few dozens and took it along with me to Bangalore😅😋
Great video 👍

Being a documentarion I LOVE YOUR WORK . This thing makes me fall in love with Mumbai Jahan main kabhi nahi gayi. :)
i come back often every few months to watch this video. its a masterpiece.
My Best Wishes, these heritage cafes will never come to an end. They will keep on going with their food serving business, it will flourish always. I like all old things they have maintained very well. It's my pray, these cafes will go on forever
Lovely !
My mom is from marine lines.
And thats how i know what these irani cafes can offer.
No matter what nothing beats nostalgia
Parsis are Indias model citizens. May their tribe thrive!
Man... what a good video..what a good background music..what a good way to show history...I almost smelled the aroma of those bun maska.
How lucky are India and Pakistsn to have this community present and active in their respective societies. Such straight forward people. May they be blessed.
Lots of good memories, growing up with Paris’s, best people in India, dhansaag, missing all the good stuff, best kulfi, I live in Canada for last 30 years
Missed all these stuff after departing from south bombay especially plum cake
I love the old school feel of these cafes. No opposition to modern cafes yet, I prefer them to fast food restaurants anyday. They're a part of Indian heritage and youngsters should promote them though they may not be hip or trendy.
Very nicely put together. Well done.
Cheers 👍
Hey...This is video was great...I don't know what...But by the end of the video ...I was in tears...I love cafés,Irani food n i couldn't accept this bitter truth ...Nevertheless...I wish I could help them...

Such a nice friendship can be seen between modi uncle and Irani uncle.
It's better to visit vintage cafe more better than modern restaurants.. very thanks to parsis community for kept their villas , vehicles even shops kept in original condition..
Amazing work! Really love the spirit of these Parsi cafes.
Interesting Information
I don't mean to offend anyone with this long comment. I apologize in earnest before hand. Irani tradition has been a promising gem to India. They brought so much to us and we are forever indebted. Their cuisine, the elitism, the class etiquette. They were also one of the most educated class of the country and its heartbreaking to witness the decline. I understand they want to preserve their authenticity but even when the restaurant was built, the original owners must have tried to decorate it in the newest fashion. If only they would renovate a little, may be the crowd would flock in. Soda bottle opener wala is a great example and though I have never been to britania, I can tell britannia will exceed sodabottle.
Next generation is not interested in this culture
@@irfann8820 that's just sad, man. Had my forefathers had such a strong base for an establishment, it'd be a delight to keep crafting such great cuisine.
Omg glad to see byculla restaurant uncle! :)
such a beautiful video made by you guys really your work is amazing n pls make more videos like old food shops pls
What a lovely presentation! Great job, guys. Would love to see more of Mumbai's diversity documented in this way
Just for the fact people love this old kinda places.. N buildings which serves good food n delicacies.. .. All the need is to revamp the whole menu.. N bring in some new gen food..
Clean tables.. Dressed waiters..
I've seen restaurant owners wanting to make their interior like some of the places..
This places can work actually
.
Need some investment.. A good management n they are good to go..
Bohot Badhiya. Waiting for more videos
thank you :)
This was such a good video to watch. Very well made. Kudos to the team.
Jeena yahaan Khushiyan Manama yahaan iske sivai Jana kahaan 🤗
Loved it completely. Being in Delhi how I wish I could be in Bombay. I would have gone to these cozy Irani cafes as often as I could. 😊
Great video guys.
thank you :)
My favorite memories of living in Mumbai, are these Irani n Parsi Cafe s.
Youngsters : Please eat at these places because they serve tasty, quality & fresh food for economical price. All American chain of restaurants McDonalds, Burger king etc sell slow poison frozen food by adding some brand to it.
Few enthusiastic people entered these restaurants, ate food and gone up.
Great documentary guys...
Parsis are legendary, some of the best people you can come across, salute
Really good documentary. Made me emotional.
But visit to Kyani bakery was not pleasant. Complacency will kill these guys on their own slow path to death. The behavior of the staff and the cashier and owner was full of "Who cares"
Loved the background music
Good work guys ..keep it up .. loved it .
I miss my birth home city BOMBAY
Unfortunate to see the number of Irani restaurants dwindle .They’re an EMOTION
Amazing Video ❤️❤️❤️
These should never be closed, the aroma and the taste are better than the Fast food we have today. My mouth is watering.
Nice and awesome 👌👍👍😊
I was a regular visitor of razdani restarent. Bun muska and tea are most precious memmory in my life. May god help this great restaurant
Beautiful documentary
Most peaceful and love spreading community.
The taste of Tea, in these restaurants is unforgettable. During my childhood, I had spent in Bombay & had visited all of Irani & Parasi restaurants from Colaba to Mahim. N.V.Hattiholi,Belgaum,Karnataka.
beautiful video
Very super information brother
This is our culture our heritage
I used to chitchat in the irani hotel near our college with friends having chai, bun maska, omelette pav. Those were the great days which have now gone with the winds,it is taken over by mcdonald's,CCD,starbugs. But no outlet can match the irani chai and all other stuff which was available those days. LONG LIVE THE PARSIS ,GREAT PEOPLE'S.
Your presentation is very good.
In the fictions of Manto and Karshan Chandar I read about Irani cafes and bakeries.
True herritage f test n love!!!
Very nice
I AM FROM SOUTH MUMBAI COLABA AND NOW I FEEL SAD FOR ALL THESE BAKERYS 😑
