I want you to realize that there are children’s voices in the harmony aswell.
I prefer watching women react to this song because like....Guys listen to the song and they're like "Oh so she's in a toxic relationship." Which yes. She is. But what they miss is the reason this an anthem is that this song is the shared experience of womanhood. This isn't the story of just one woman. This is our story and though not all of us have experienced all of it, we've all experienced some of it.
Not all men are toxic but all women have a story.
I didn't think it was about abuse, when I first heard it. I thought I was just about relationships generally and how women do the bulk of the unpaid domestic and emotional labour and how much men take it for granted.
I'm 50, and this is a big part of the reason I will remain single by choice.
It shows the expectations society has on women and how no matter the year/century we are in, we are always expected to perform a role so tiring even against our choices in life. By all means a song that makes one reflect sooo much
She literally explains what the song is about. She read a book that inspired it. It's about escaping a relationship, and the island is allegorical to the trap in question.
But yeah, I consider myself a feminist. But I don't consider extremists who. aggressively implies there is some epidemic of men harming women. There is a religious element to this. Religion is what promotes the treatment of women as second-class citizens. Because if men (and women) are secular humanists, it tends to mean they thought heavily about their morals and ethics.
Exactly. This is what hit me so hard when I first heard it and why it made me tear up. Looking back at my mother, my aunts, my grandmothers and recognising the generational trauma and what they were and are expected to put up with.
The dual meaning in the lyrics "the capillaries in my eyes are bursting" (can be both from rubbing one's eyes from fatigue or from physical abuse) as well as "so that he never lifts a finger" (refers to both him not having to do the work, and him not physically abusing her).
Capillaries also burst in many women during child labor.

OMG! I was literally crying, when I heard the Cacophony arrangement.
So many voices and faces of so many different races and gender identities and sexualities and ethnicities. All of which have suffered as a result of the system the song criticizes, it really is awesome.
This song is a masterpiece. The use of the pomegranate in this video reminds me of the Greek myth about Persephone and Hades.
They also say Eve in the Bible actually ate a pomegranate fruit not an apple.
@@michellesimmons3150 The biblical forbidden fruit is never identified, it's only ever described as פֶּ֫רִי, which is just the Hebrew word for "fruit". Pomegranates and apples are both possible among a wide range of others, in Islamic tradition it's usually associated with wheat or grapevines. Most likely whoever wrote the myth either didn't have a specific fruit in mind or envisioned it as a totally seperate fruit unlike any fruit still on Earth, the first time anyone really seemed to care about making it a specific fruit was when the association with it specifically being an apple came about in Western Europe, which was just a pun in Latin.

Strange how we thought we young feminists of the 60's corrected this. In some ways we were wrong. In some ways we are now right. the vocal layering in this song is wonderful, then she adds the alliteration, syncopation etc and it becomes even richer and more interesting..... this sound would sound amazing no matter what they lyrics were about. the combination of lyrics and vocal choices just elevates it even more
As someone who is not on TikTok, the first time I came across Paris Paloma's viral sensation was through a Justin Hawkins reaction. I'm thankful to him for introducing me to this gem of a musical production and thankful to Beth for her added insight into the singing, the music, the lyrics and meanings of this song.

1:33 that high octave doubling on parts of the chorus is why I like this song so much. It’s such a minor thing but something about it catches my ear so well.

Beth I am her next door neighbour, when she moved in I was worried about telling her I played the alto sax. Paris is a wonderful singer and person. She was nervous about disturbing me with music, couldn't have asked for a better neighbour. X

All of Paris’ stuff is great! My personal favorite is the fruits, but that was also the first one I heard.
As some have mentioned, the ambiguity of the some of the lyrics are just…chef’s kiss. I genuinely feel like she put a lot of thought and care into the lyrics she chose. And I just absolutely love the way the music flows with the lyrics and highlights certain moments of the lyrics so fluidly and effectively.
I discovered her when her song “the fruits” started gaining traction, which is another excellent example of her work in my opinion, especially if you like the feminist themes of “labour.”
She just seems incredibly skilled and talented and I cannot wait to hear more of her work going forward. Cacophony has been such a beautiful album.
i know this was a while ago but i wanted to point out… the background vocals on the second round of “all day every day” and so on sound very distinctly childlike and it adds so much meaning and power to that bit. just… the fact that it almost seems unavoidable as a future or that children are perfectly aware of this experience.

I've never seen anyone point out the candle. She lights it up once she sits down, but his is never lighted up. The way I see it, she's giving him a deadline, while he has the mindset that she's always going to be there, that she's always gonna stay despite whatever he does or doesn't do. In the end, her candle is already melted away, and the fire is no longer there, and from the way he pauses when seeing her gone, it probably means he's surprised. He expected her to stay, like he expected her to do all those things for her.
You should watch the new version too. Not even for a video, I think every fem presenting person should watch the new version bc it's beautiful.

Actually you are incorrect, people can hear her next door, I know this for a simple reason, I'm her next door neighbour. Paris has a wonderful voice. Also she accepts the fact that I play the sax so we get on very well. Interesting fact? When she moved in I was nervous to tell her I played an instrument and she was nervous about disturbing me with music. We get on just fine. She is a lovely human being

As a guy I'm not going to resonate with the 'feminism anthem ' bit , but, It is one of those rare beautifully crafted songs.
It is , also, in addiion to any direct feminist relevance, a brilliant study of a narcassitic individual and all the gaslighting that comes with that.
And how sad is that. Maybe if more men had empathy for the struggles of women, we still wouldn't be fighting for our rights.
That chorus runs through my head all the time now. Sick of it. The patriarchy, not the song. Like a lot of people, I came from a VERY patriarchal family; just past being Amish. No, no, NO!!!! That was never going to be my life. Every time I tried to live as I was EXPECTED it ended very badly. No more. I'm finally free, and happy. My sister in law digs that "How sad you have no one to love you." ????? I have very close friends I've had for 30, 40 years history with them. A lot of people love me, actually. I'd 100% rather be single than married to.....THAT. I'm twice divorced. I do not consider them failures but learning experiences. This song struck home for me. Passionate Pagan that I am. Coincidently; I took my daughter and fled when the violence began. No. I have to fix this. SHE will not suffer my childhood. Yes, I got that it was sung....quietly. You can't raise your voice when men are around. I was punished for speaking, sneezing, coughing......SILENCE! Apparently every single man's right. ??????? I'm 65 year old woman. And I can sussinctly say....FUCK THAT! Thank you Beth.
