Johnny Mathis is a national treasure. Hit after hit after hit. No comparisons.
One can't appreciate his music until attending his live concerts --- blew us away --
The voice is just beyond words Heavenly ❤
Her reaction is perfect.
Pure talent. Unmatched before or since.
Such an angelic voice.
Beautiful voice. Johnny still with us.
He has a truly amazing voice.
A voice from heavenly quality
What a great voice! So sad music like this is no longer made. I do miss it.
He has a voice like velvet, smooth and timeless.
I just found your channel and am a new subscriber. I have been watching your reactions and I love how genuine they are.
Then I came across this one. It took my breath.
I literally welled up listening. He was my mom's all time favorite singer. It takes me back to my youth and the days it was just her and I. She'd play his record over and over and dance around to it.
I on 2016 my mom passed away from cancer. I sat by her side each day the last 2 weeks of her life. Watching hallmark Christmas movies over and over with her, holding her hand.
Her last day, I played her bagpipe music (we're Scottish) and literally the last song I played her was Chances Are. It was the last time I saw her smile and I'll never forget that moment.
She always had that "dreamy" look that you described as she listened to him. I can only hope it helped her in peace as she crossed.
Thank you again for this and bless you.
I am so sorry for your loss
My Mom was my best friend.
John is a great singer. He's still performing at 88. I heard a song on an early show of American Bandstand in 57, too young back then. It's What Will my Mary Say by John. Ever so beautiful probably my favorite of his many great songs. I truly recommend checking it out
I got to see Johnny Mathis in concert twice. His performance was so great with that beautiful voice of his!! Anything he sings was unbelievably beautiful!! ❤️🎵
My grandmother used to say his voice was like a cashmere sweater. You just let it surround you.
i love that 🥰
Lead Scouter Your grandmother was right.
Lead Scouter Thank you I like that.
That is THE BEST description of his voice!❤
I was there he first song a wonderful man a generation grew up listing to this wonderful man
Johnny is gorgeous, inside and out! A black man who not many people realized was black, he said himself that although he is gay a lot of women who come to his concerts fancy themselves Mrs Johnny Mathis - with songs like this kind of understandable! Incredible range, and with circular breathing he can hold a high note for several minutes!!! Listen to 'It's Not for Me to Say', or 'Fly Me To The Moon' - it will make you scream 'breathe, Johnny!' at your screen!
He is one of kind. He goes back to my high school days. My girl friend at the time would hear him and get lose at it.
Johnny Mathis and Nat King Cole where two of the ultra smooth singers in the 50's - 60's. Voices you will never hear again.
This gorgeous man was in my day very vary popular and such a talent everyone of my friends loved him so much. Great Voice
Versatile, flexible velvety voice that could go from high to low back again with seemingly no effort and held for as long as needed. Fabulous.
Johnny Mathis had one of the best voices ever and was also a very accomplished songwriter. Johnny Mathis songs worth checking out are wonderful wonderful, A Certain Smile and a child is born.
Johnny made a TV appearance on the show "Criminal Minds" - he sang at David Rossi's wedding in one of the last shows of the series.
At 3:27 I Love Johnny's Raised Voice!
He's just amazing plain and simple!
On the other hand, there's the "good boys".......just as yummy as the "bad boys. Johnny's voice is so smooth; he was my older sister's generation of pop, and I remember every time "Wonderful, Wonderful" or "It's Not For Me To Say" came on the radio of her VW Beetle, she would give me the goo-goo eyes, and we'd both sing along. His voice still melts me.
you are like a beautiful flower, blooming, when you smile.
My father sang in the choir in high school (and was on the track team) with Johnny. Future Miss America, and Catwoman actress Lee Meriwether was also there with them.
My son is a good singer too.
As for me, it's like my dad told me, "Son, you couldn't carry a tune in a bucket."
You would also love Where Do I Begin (A Love Story) and A Time for Us, both theme songs for popular movies at the time. Smooth and beautifully romantic.
One of my favorite artists. I got to see him live in Las Vegas in 1990, while my fiancé was in Saudi Arabia with Deseret Storm. Hearing Johnny and missing Randy, you can imagine how I was feeling with this music.
I love the way you're smiling. I'm saying..."Yes...he IS that good."
Ha! Too cute wit your singin! Didn’t realize you did this one already. He had another one called It’s Not For Me to Say, & Misty, also some Christmas hits: Sleigh Ride, & Most Wonderful Time of the Year, & of course the stuff he did with Niecy Williams.
You would enjoy a vocal & jazz legend collaboration by Johnny Harman & John Coltrane:
My One & Only Love & You Are Too Beautiful.
Just that smooth Johnny Mathis 😎 magic. Enjoy hunnie bunny 🐰 😘 💕
Very Romantic song.
One of the greatest singers of all time. You want to be sitting in front of a fire listening to this. What a silky voice.
He has such a beautiful, silky smooth voice.
JM is a legend. Chances are is / was his signature song. He sang for decades and quite well . My Mother loved him. She felt he was extremely kind and such a pleasant person. She loved every song he ever did. He was extremely popular - for decades and very well liked by the public.
It*s so nice to see a YOUNG woman like yourself who appreciates the music of Johnny Mathis.
Johnny Mathis was one of my most favorite voices on WPAT, growing up!
Girl at 84 Johnny Mathis can have me blushing just like you were....I saw you twirling your hair as and giggling.
Johnny Mathis has an amazing gift, and I am so glad he shares it with us. You might enjoy a seldom heard song of his called "Arieanne." It's so beautiful! Thanks for the review! Blessings to you!
I heard a variation of this song where when he gets back to the beginning part and the background orchestra switches to a Bossa Nova. It fits perfect
I found this video in my list as I was watching the same Song on another 'reaction'
The difference between this and the other was obvious, the previous stopped theirs part through which spoiled it. You watched it and offered your obvious reaction visually...
We all enjoyed it, together...Perfection.
From the summer of 1957---------------this song was # 1 all over the world. Recorded at Columbia Records Studio, which in those days, had the best echo-chamber.--------------------Arranged / conducted, by Ray Coniff, one of the many masters of arrangement, that Columbia had, in those days. -------------Real music---------real singing. No computers-------------captured on 2" tape , with a 4-track mixer. Recorded ' live " ---------------singer & orchestra, together. ------------------------------WolfSky9, 74 y/o
Check out Heavenly-Misty-12th of Never-Up Up And Away in my beautiful Ballon.☺
Johnny Mathis is alive and well at the age of 84.
That's my man. Always loved that woice. When I was 10 I went and bought myself tickets to his concert. He was awesome.Super romantic right?
The ladies loved his romantic vocals so much that here in Montreal we referred to him as "Johnny Mattress" LOL
...and the manufactured fantasy continues, lol!
ooh lay down my love
Hahahaha omg I remember that now! Too true
🤣🤣🤣👍
Great music to dance to!
One of the best voices of all time. My mom would play Johnnie Mathis when I was a young boy loved his albums.
My mother's favorite. SOOO charismatic, i love his voice. His lives are so great.
I'll take Johnny Mathis every day for listening pleasure 🤘🏾🤎
My parents loved his music...
Maravilhoso 🥰❤️❤️❤️
Simplesmente o máximo 😘😘😘👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Amo ouvir esse maravilhoso cantor 💓
This song is iconic. My mother loved it so much. I do too.
Johnny was always a class act.
50's. On the radio all the time. Performed at Carnegie Hall.
Been a fan of his for years. Beautiful voice and beautiful music! Thank you for this!
His voice is perfection and so was his singing anywhere near his peak!
Thanks for reacting to Johnny! I saw him awhile back. He did "Misty" and there's a couple of measures where he sings a high falsetto note. Normally, he would continue with the lyric but the entire band stopped, it got deadly quiet, and all you could hear were all of the females swooning! Of course, it was followed by a lot of laughter.
Can you imagine a rapper opening up his show?
That was a very cute reaction. I enjoyed it. Thanks
This was the number one make-out song in the late fifties and all of the sixties. His Greatest Hits lp was on the Top 100 list for over 500 weeks!!!
Yes, yes, yes. I love this man's voice. I never thought I would hear anyone react to him. Thanks so much for this memory.
One of the best singers of all time
VERY ROMANTIC, KSO ! ------------------This song was #1 all over the country, in the summer of '57. -------------Arranged & produced, by Ray Coniff, one of Columbia's best .-------------------This WAS romance .------------------------------WolfSky9, 73 y/o
Frankie Avelon, same general generation. But I like Johnny Mathis even more. I fell in love with his voice when I was 12. 1 of the best Christmas presents I ever got were tickets to a concert of his. He sounded even better than on a record. The notes danced around the theater.
I was raised on Johnny's music...love it
I love this mans voice! I of course have his Christmas albums as well because he just warms my heart and puts me in a festive mood. And to be honest his radio hits kinda put me in the mood as well ☺️(TMI lol)
Johnny Mathis is a light skinned black man. He is truly a pioneer and icon. Having achieved huge fame in the 50's as a black man with such huge hits is amazing and his "Greatest Hits" album was on the Billboard charts for years. Also, he was a gay man. Imagine being black and gay in the 50's. His close friends knew but he did not come out publicly until 40 years later. I can't imagine what he had to go through not being able to live his "true" life or be his "true" self for all those years.
I used to play my mother's Johnny Mathis album and set it on the last song to play over and over again because it was my favorite; Wonderful, Wonderful! Please react to that one!
One of the best voices in his generation - or any generation.
AMEN!!
...JM’s music was considered the best “make out “ music 🎶
I love how I'm so d*mn old that most of the time I'm going through these lists going "OMG YOU'VE NEVER HEARD THIS?!?"
I can never keep from crying when I listen to this song.
LOVE JOHNNY MATHIS! One of my all time favourites, despite being an 80s teen. Some talent/ sound is just pure. Timeless. Undeniable. And the songwriting, musicians...when love songs were beautiful. Thank you for covering it and to the person recommending him. He has SO MANY GORGEOUS SONGS! Not just the Christmas albums. Check them out.
KAO : This is from summer of 1957. Johnny Mathis was THE romantic balladeer of the 50's & early 60's.-----------WolfSky9, 74 y/o
Arranged & Produced by Ray Coniff, one of Columbia's best in those days. ---------------------------------------WolfSky9
What I love about following you is when you dig deep into oldies you bring up songs I haven't heard in decades. Peace and Love and big hugs dear
As someone else mentioned previously, "Misty" is another great song by Johnny. It really plucks on the heartstrings.
Smooth as melted butter...😁
Great artist had the good luck to see his concert in Australia in the 70's just as good live as in the studio thank you for playing it.
This is one man singing!
Mr Johnny Mathis -------------his albums on Columbia , are now legendary. --------------------------------WolfSky9, 74 y/o
My wife is in love with Johnny! He was quite the athlete at San Francisco State University and invited to try out for the US Olympic team.
I have always had a crush on him too
i wish youngsters today would listen to this master crooner.
The master of mellow love songs.
I know Johnny Mathis because my family listened to him and everyone loved his voice. Great singer and entertainer.
The velvet voice. He is magic. I suggest that you hear a body of work before you compare! There is no one like Johnny Mathis. He is one of a kind.
There was a girl that i love in high school she was in every class we had i wrote the words down from this song and sung this song for her but the next year she left our school
Early life and education
Mathis was born in Gilmer, Texas, on September 30, 1935,[2] the fourth of seven children of Clem Mathis and Mildred Boyd.[3] The family moved to San Francisco, California, settling on 32nd Avenue in the Richmond District, where Mathis grew up. His father had worked in vaudeville, and when he saw his son's talent, he bought an old upright piano for $25 (US$363 in 2019 dollars[4]) and encouraged him. Mathis began learning songs and routines from his father. His first song was "My Blue Heaven".[5] Mathis started singing and dancing for visitors at home, at school, and at church functions.[6] Mathis is of African-American and Native American heritage......from Wiki.....He like me was African American and Native America....so...many of us have cold black curly hair....and olive complexion skin...AAAAwwwwwwww......I miss him....R.I.P. Johnny.
Johnny Mathis is still alive. No RIP neccessary. He's 84.
Johnny’s voice makes you feel a certain way. Make-out music, we used to call it. A lot of babies were born 9 months after this came out 😝
I always regretted that as a black man he was unable to star in the movie musicals. His rendition of those songs are amazing. I have no idea if he ever wanted to act. He is beyond successful as a singer. Lovely man too
Johnny Mathis, voice like warm honey from an era when popular music was good and good music was popular. Thank you, I'd forgotten how good he is and your not silly at all.
He is the top 5 singers of the 20th Century
TRIVIA -- Who holds the record industry record (all time) for number of YEARS on the chart for an LP -- Johnny Mathis TEN YEAR ON THE TOP 100

His voice can only be described as Butter 🎶🎧 great song
Madeline Kahn (God rest her soul) described his voice this way: "it sounds like Jello". Hilarious
I love your reactions! And I love Johnny Mathis! Listen to his song, Misty, and What”ll I Do?! Have you ever listened to anything by Gene Pitney? He was popular just before the Beatles. His song, I’m Gonna Be Strong, is very emotional and his voice is so poetic in it. I think you’ll like that one and some of his other big hits - Town Without Pity, 24 Hours to Tulsa, and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.
LOVE Gene Pitney💕
Don t forget Half Heaven, Half Heartache- Maybe Pitney s best.
Such a romantic melody. Sweet like candy.
Mohamed Ali Sang "Chances are I'm gonna' kick your scrawny ass". on a boxing reel I watched back in the seventies. I can't hear this song without thinking about that moment.
I grew up with Johnny Mathis music all over the house ,what a memory!
Is that great or What? Great reaction as always. Hope you and yours are well.
Since the age of 10-11 ,cant remember anymore , I heard this icon of music. Secretly recorded one of his record's ,vinyl records ,to cassette tape. We were not allowed to listen to secular music. Fan for life!
A very sentimental song....
