Being white, growing up in an all white country town, My bedroom held my 45 rpm player and was filled with records by Sam Cooke, Jerry Butler, Jackie Wilson and many more along with Elvis and Bobby Darin. Down stairs my mom and dad listened to Sammy Davis Jr., Count Basie, Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. My mothers favorite was , Nat King Cole and she cried like a baby for a solid week when he died. Christmas would not be Christmas without Nat King Cole's Christmas albums being played in every household. His voice was like a red velvet cake you just wanted to savor.

I'm glad to see brothers and sisters from the X, Y and Z generations listen and discover the once-in-a-lifetime voice of Nat King Cole. As a baby boomer, I found Nat King Cole's voice to be awe-inspiring. Even today listening to his classic songs gives me goosebumps. As a request, play "Smile" by Nat King Cole. You won't regret it!

This man's tone, sound, delivery and stage presence was something to see! My husband and I are 50s babies who know all his songs! And to think he was just standing in for the singer of the combo they were in and was primarily the piano player! His timing is impeccable and that voice!!! We still miss him!! Thanks for this reaction, loved it!!

My father's childhood best friend was driving and stopped to help a couple of ladies in a nice Cadillac with a flat tire. They offered to pay him, but he said no. They wouldn't take no for an answer, so he gave them his address to send a thank you card. The next week, Sears delivered their most expensive television, with a note saying, "thanks for helping my family, Nat King Cole".

Nat King Cole was huge in the 1950s. He is from my folk's era, but mom and dad would play his records all the time, especially his Christmas album, at Christmas time. What an absolutely beautiful and unique voice. He was also a wonderful Human Being, helping poor people, both Black and white. There was no "Welfare" to help you back then, only churches and charities. Nat (Nathaniel) King Cole, died of Lung cancer, at a relatively young age. Almost anytime you saw Nat, in a movie, or on TV, (He had his own tv show too.) he had a smoke hanging out of his mouth. Everyone knows his daughter "Natalie" (named after her father) who also was a famous R&B/ Gospel artist. Natalie was a huge star in the 1980s, and won a couple of Grammy awards for her music in that time period. So many songs by Nat King Cole you could play.
Thank you for remembering this icon of music world wide.

Yes! The incomparable Nat King Cole. The man just oozed class and sophistication. Such an amazing voice. It's a real shame that he died so young (age 45). I was born way back in 1954 and I remember seeing him on TV in the early 60s when my parents would be watching television. Nat King Cole was my mother's favorite singer. I think she had just about all of his albums. I still occasionally listen to some of his music. He's a true legend.

The thing that sets songs from back then apart from today's music, is that they left space in the song for interpretation. You very rarely find that today. Today's songs are jam-packed with lyrics, that there isn't room to breathe. If you were to do a cover of a modern song, you would have to phrase it exactly like the original record as there is no place else to go.

So what is it about the singers of yesterday, like Louis, Ella, Sarah, Frank and Nat, that was so appealing? First it was because they and the musics composers took the lyrics so seriously. The lyrics have a story to tell, and because of Louis Armstrong, singers interpreted those lyrics. Each word, every syllable was clearly pronounced so that you could hear what they were singing. Second, these singers sang that lyric directly to you personally, and their interpretation made you feel what they felt, understand what they see. They looked right at you and kept their eyes open. Third, these singers respected their audiences. Not only did they dress for the occasion, they respected the relationships between people. They never talked down to or dressed down for their audiences. Fourth, because of all this they made the audience feel as if they knew them. Frank was the coolest guy in the room. A guy you wanted to pal around with, have a drink with, and could interpret a lyric with the best. Nat was that interesting and endearing uncle with the golden deep voice you could cozy up to. Ella was that sweet, lovable woman with the pretty voice that never hit a wrong note and could improvise like crazy. Ella was the woman that let you look deep into her soul, laying bare all her emotions. Sarah was the queen of elegance with the divine voice and incredible range. We are lucky to have had them all.

Now just imagine he was the first Black Man to ever have a show on Television, even though it didn’t last very long, but it was a good show and the people who came on to support him were equally fantastic. The sad part about things back then that he couldn’t stay at the Hotels where he performed, many times not being allowed to walk into the front entrances. Also he was met with opposition when he bought his home in California, to the point where the neighbors offered to buy the house if he would just move, because he was unwelcome in the neighborhood. And i bet those fools listened to his music. What a talent, and his daughter Natalie had a great career as well. When the duet between them came out i lost it. That song in itself just was equally beautifully arranged, and you would have never thought that he passed away years before it was made. WOW!

Almost 64 ok 63 1/2 my dad was from the era that he could be forgiven? for feeling a certain way about folks with different coloured skin, my first experience of someone who wasn’t completely washed, I think I was 4 years old, his words were that man just has different coloured skin, and that was that. A fond memory of that time for me was Nat King Cole Christmas album play on the record player. As someone late to Apple Music I was delighted to find that same album. Nat King Cole, Louis Armstrong and others are a real treasure.

I sure hope that you have heard and appreciated the duet with his daughter Natalie. He's may ALL time favorite singer. I have a lot of his music in my music collection. You should check out L-O-V-E ( the Multilingual Version)

Nat King Cole had a unique voice as did his daughter.

You guys have to do Nat King Cole's version of "Stardust". The gold standard for that song that has never been approached. Pure Magic.
