Most American singers before the us General’s report of 1964 smoked tobacco. People were falsely led to believe that cigarettes were healthy for them, and singers were included. Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Judy Garland, Sarah Vaughan, Samir Davis Jr, Dean Martin, Dionne Warwick, Aretha Franklin, Dusty Springfield, Tony Bennet, Ethel Merman, Joni Mitchell, Whitney Houston( who smoked as many as 4 packs a day) all smoked at some point in their careers.
This song, and others of his, was played in our high school cafeteria during lunchtime EVERY SINGLE DAY! The idea being that the mellifluous notes would have a soporific effect on we wild and crazy teenagers and they were right. I don't recall a single riot or even a mild outbreak of chaos then, in the early 1960's.
My Mum had a copy of Johnny Mathis' Greatest Hits with I was a girl. We would sing along and knew every word. This is one of our favorites, along with Twelfth of Never.
John didn't smoke for very long. It affected his voice pretty quickly and he immediately stopped. Back when the cover pic was taken for publicity purposes in the late 1950's, cigarettes were considered "cool" and sexy which is why he is shown with it in the pic. He smoked for a off and on for about 2 years. He is still touring and still has his amazing voice. He's 86! He looks great and he works out 5 days a week at the gym.
Johnny Mathis is known for his beautiful romantic ballads. He has a very unique velvet voice. His music has spanned over 6 decades. He had so many great hits such as "Wonderful! Wonderful!", "It's Not For Me To Say", "The Twelfth Of Never", "Gina", "What Will Mary Say", "Misty" etc. He also did a couple of duets with Deniece Williams "Too Much, Too Little, Too Late" & "You're All I Need to Get By".
This man is a true artist and a true talent. Johnny Mathis will always stand the test of time. His music is just as popular today as it was 50 years ago. You will never see an artist like Johnny Mathis in this day and age. Pick any of his songs to play and you will not be disappointed! "Too much, too little, too late", "Twelfth of Never", and "Life is a song Worth Singing" are some of my favorites.
One of the original “Crooners”! This silky smooth voice reminds me of my mother, who loved Johnny Mathis and the long list of others who sang like this. His voice is also synonymous with Christmas for me because my parents had an album of Holiday music by this iconic singer. 🎄🌺✌️
OMG HE HASEN'T SMOKED IN YEARS YEARS

I used to sing like that, but then I woke up!!!
Once upon a time, almost everyone smoked. It affected the lungs more than the vocal folds.

I have Johnny Mathis stuck in my car CD player so fortunately, I love listening to him..(although there are times I'd like to listen to LP)
Crazy in this era it was considered "cool" to smoke and a lot of people did.

Johnny Mathis was truly a gift from above. I’ve always loved his music. That says a lot because a lot of us remember his music from when we were kids
He could sing and was and still is a beautiful man.
One of the best male ballads ever.
