- Johnny Mathis, himself, and a Mrs. Robinson wrote this song. I wish I knew her first name. I personally never upload a song unless it has a special meaning to me. This one really touches my heart. I think it will yours too.
Update, thanks to a commenter: This song was written by Jessie Mae Robinson with Johnny Mathis. I thank the commenter so much for the information.

Hopefully, the video doesn't distract from the beauty that is the voice of Johnny Mathis. Tim and Hawk dancing together nude in the single most moving scene in Fellow Travelers. It's sublime.
Love this man, beautiful voice. He came out as a gay man in 1982. He stated that he received death threats after his admission. Kind of goes with the whole theme of Fellow Travelers.

Had a crush on a lovely high school classmate named Charleen. At every Friday nite dance I would stand with the other boys on our side of the room and just stare across at her. I loved her from afar for years but never had the courage to even ask her to dance much less tell her how I felt. I am 75 now and looking back, still regret my lack of courage. Johnny Mathis felt my pain and wrote this song for me, and I imagine many other 15 year olds.
Never pass up what life presents at the moment because it passes quickly, never to return.

A classic that tells the story of every shy young boy who just couldn't get the courage to walk across the dance floor to meet the girl of his dreams. 50 years ago I heard this song and decided that I didn't want to be that guy. That's how I met the love of my life. Still going strong and try to see Johnny any time he's in town. He's still one of the best ever !!!

I spoke with Jesse Mae Robinson many years ago, when I was working on my demo. She told me that she had given Johnny the credits for some minor changes to the lyric. Boy they were far from minor. It is one of the sweetest songs I know. I still sing it.

I’ve been a fan of this man’s beautiful voice since I first heard it in the mid-50s. Johnny Mathis has a sublime voice and I’ll never tire of his magnificent phrasing. This song makes me very melancholic. Truly beautiful. :-)

I am 48 and have been listening to Jonny Mathis since I was 13. Back when I graduated my parents did not have much money but they bought be his greatest hits albums. It is a several record set. He has the smoothest voice!!! My fav singer ever. I have trouble finding guitar chords to this song and a few other of my favorites. But this song is my very favorite by him!!!!!!!!

That is a wonderful posting you put up to the meaning of a song and its connection to us. Johnny is one of the best and so unique no one else can sing a song in this style.
The story as I heard it on Johnny's name being added to the song writing credits was, the song writer was in the studio and was asked to come up with a song fast. So she penned this one really quick, but got stuck for one line, which Johnny offered up, she completed writing the song and to Johnny's surprise, she had added his name as a song writing credit.

I am loving him for months in minds thoughts and feelings.. Hoping he is really the same until we're face to face.
I met Mathis when I was a freshman at Humboldt State. The school paper was sponsoring Mathis and the Sy Zintner Band, and I was publicity person. I had run errands with Mrs. Zintner before the show, getting food for several of the band members (and three marriage proposals!). At intermission, Mrs. Zintner came out and took me backstage, and introduced me to Mathis. He was very polite, and had many questions about the new surface on the Humboldt State track. This is my favorite song!

Trying to soothe my 16 month old great niece I played Johnny on your site, and my girl is so in love with Johnny that she kisses and hugs the screen as though he was really there. When I try to move on. It is big business. I am so glad that his music will live on through children like her. No problem listening, the quality of your tracks is wonderful..Thanks for peacefully evenings with my niece.
