Johnny Mathis loved the original jazz number written by Erroll Garner so he requested lyrics. They made it happen! So, Johnny has the first recording of "Misty" with vocals!

I've listen to Johnny mathis since 1960 when I was three n had a stack of his records at home I love this particular song as it's so romantic for someone like me whose heart is softer. But I still can't find a girl nowadays as romantic n lovely as the song❤

Johnny singing 'Misty' with this arrangement behind him is, in my mind, the finest example of what music is all about and what it is meant to be, to touch our spirit and awaken thoughts of love which we, way too often, tuck away in our hearts away from the hustle and bustle of our daily lives. We tear up and in many cases cry uncontrollably when we hear Johnny sing it and if we listen to it a thousand times, the feelings we get will never ebb. "Look at me, I'm as helpless as a kitten up a tree." After that opening line a listener hearing it for the first time gets 'locked in' and can't wait for more!
Yes indeed with all of the arrangement behind him he was fun to listen to. However he could have easily jazz-ed it up a bit more to further engage a broader interest. I saw Johnny Mathis live in Seattle many years ago and he did some of his hits and he did put some serious R&B into those songs and it was fabulous.
I just read about how he created that famous fade in effect where his voice seems to come right out of the orchestra. It was as if the orchestra became is voice. Amazing. He did it by walking closer and closer to the microphone as he saying that note.
Those strings sure did the job back in that day. However, his phrasing and such could have touched more with the more powerful male sound that he always had and he could do it. But he was 'different' and successful with this voice and sound so producers with the money said keep it going because he does the full spectrum of sound and he could compete with the string section.
Yes, when everyone heard that for the first time the reaction was always, "Did you hear that! Was that his voice?" It's funny, but when I turned on the video to see your comment I couldn't resist singing the song with Johnny before I did. It's one of the few songs I know EVERY SINGLE WORD and when I come to the part you were talking about I have a little difficulty 🙂to say the least! There are so many songs and artists we have become fond of over the years but this particular song sung by Johnny Mathis with fabulous orchestration behind him is, to me, the musical moment in my life I am most endeared with. I immediately think of a woman I was infatuated with at the time this song came out and you can guess the impression this song had on me. @@JohnBernardon-py7wf

When I hear Johnny Mathis's songs it reminds of my Dad who would sing and whistle them to us as kids....his songs as gentle and loving as my dad was....would love just one more dance to one of Johnny Mathis's songs with my dad.....one day when we meet again....
Thank you for posting all the Johnny Mathis songs; they are divine! I’ve never heard a more beautiful male vocalist in this genre than Johnny Mathis. At 2:40 when he comes in over the Oboe “oooooon my own...” sounding like the instrument! ❤️ It is “heavenly.”
In a time when gays (they weren't even called gays back then) were virtually not accepted anywhere, Mathis was so beautifully gifted with voice, and so romantic, that no one cared if he was gay, or even mentioned it. Sixty years later this remains the same. I saw him at the beautiful Fox Theatre in St.Louis when he was 70 or 71, and he still had that voice.
I felt so lucky to get a pretty clean copy of the Heavenly Album in true stereo and original 1959 pressing. The orchestral arrangements of Glenn Osser is kickass amazing! And yes - nobody can better this vocal version of a Errol Garner jazz standard.
Truth be known, he was my voice teacher and especially with MISTY! At one time I could imitate him, but old age has done a number on the old chords. I would love to have the instrumental version of MISTY by the same director Glenn Osser, that piano player is (was) Marvelous!!
I took my wife to see him in 1969 at the Melody Land theatre in Orange County, California. He performed all of his tremendous songs and was wonderful. I wish it were 1969 again. Thank you Johnny.
Arranged, orchestrated & produced by the Great Mr. Glenn Osser. -----In '59, only Columbia had an echo chamber like this. ----------An all-time Masterpiece, Ladies & Gents, we'll not hear the likes of this, ever again. ---------------------WolfSky9, 71 y/o
'still brings a "tear to me eye!" I like Johnny's version better than any other version. I'm glad he decided to be a singer, instead of an Olympian, like he was preparing to do! And thank you for posting this wonderful song!

You're very lucky...I wasn't born until 1965 so I never saw the sane world of yesteryear firsthand, as it had already started going to hell when I came upon the scene. 🤮
Johnny Mathis has been the love of my life for 66yrs. Fantastic voice, we will never hear the like of again, just perfection. Thank you John, great singer lovely man.xx
One of the greatest love songs of all time..❤️🔥
When I hear Johnny Mathis's songs it reminds of my Dad who would sing and whistle them to us as kids....his songs as gentle and loving as my dad was....would love just one more dance to one of Johnny Mathis's songs with my dad.....one day when we meet again....
My Dad would play his music as we were going to sleep.
my dad would whistle to us, too - sweet memory (this was his favorite song)
I love this song and i love the beautiful comments i read here .
love is still the sweetest candy in the candy store.
Johnny Mathis is America's gift to the musical world
One of the most beautiful songs ever written! And only Johnny Mathis can sing it so well!
That song is his....this song you some wine that’s a perfect evening
@@melianna999 He sure can hit those high notes. Beautiful voice. I’ve seen him maybe three times. Perfect!
Thank you for posting all the Johnny Mathis songs; they are divine! I’ve never heard a more beautiful male vocalist in this genre than Johnny Mathis.
At 2:40 when he comes in over the Oboe “oooooon my own...” sounding like the instrument! ❤️
It is “heavenly.”
Amazing ❤❤
Que coisa maravilhosa! A voz de um anjo, a música simplesmente divina. Como foi que deixamos de lado obras de arte tão belas como essa?!
Verdaderamente!!
And never, ever any kind of scandal...just a beautiful, sensitive, wonderful person.
I SAW HIM AT THE FOX THEATRE IN St. Louis WHEN HE WAS IN HIS 80 AND HE STILL HAD HIS WONDERFUL VOICE.
Hey, was Johnny Mathis gay??
@@slicesofsib5572 yes he is!
I never cared one way or another, never asked... I love the man and his Music, have since his beginning! My dying wish is to see him in Concert!
No one can top this version of Misty in my mind.
Mr. Mathis is the most romantic singer I've had the pleasure of enjoying for decades🎶🎵
Recorded 59 years ago, this fantastic song still withstands the test of time. We will never again have such incredible artistry, class & fidelity.
I felt so lucky to get a pretty clean copy of the Heavenly Album in true stereo and original 1959 pressing. The orchestral arrangements of Glenn Osser is kickass amazing! And yes - nobody can better this vocal version of a Errol Garner jazz standard.
Couldn't agree more Bob!
Wow Thisnwong is timeless
Truth be known, he was my voice teacher and especially with MISTY! At one time I could imitate him, but old age has done a number on the old chords. I would love to have the instrumental version of MISTY by the same director Glenn Osser, that piano player is (was) Marvelous!!
@@bpabustan ...and it was recorded on the very best vacuum-tube equipment with the best engineers that ushered in the stereo era.
This was one of dads favorite songs. Happy Fathers Day dad.
God blessed you, Mr Mathis.😇🙏🏻
I took my wife to see him in 1969 at the Melody Land theatre in Orange County, California. He performed all of his tremendous songs and was wonderful. I wish it were 1969 again. Thank you Johnny.
Arranged, orchestrated & produced by the Great Mr. Glenn Osser. -----In '59, only Columbia had an echo chamber like this. ----------An all-time Masterpiece, Ladies & Gents, we'll not hear the likes of this, ever again. ---------------------WolfSky9, 71 y/o
I AGREE WITH THAT ONE! WONDERFUL MAN AND SINGER.
respect man
That echo chamber was called "360 Sound".
I love the Glen Osser Orchestra. I also like Mathis with Percy Faith in the background. I"m a Faith Fan as well as a Mathis Fan.
Erroll Garner...
'still brings a "tear to me eye!"
I like Johnny's version better than any other version. I'm glad he decided to be a singer, instead of an Olympian, like he was preparing to do! And thank you for posting this wonderful song!
This is a great version but you should listen to Sarah Vaughan's.
Johnny mathis is wonderful
A truly beautiful & romantic song...1959 classic.....🤗❤🎵🎼🎵🎼
I used to be a fan, now I'm an air conditioner.
Brilliant
Love it!
Good one 👍
I used to like tractors, but I don't any more. I'm an ex-tractor fan.
LOL, cute
A voice that never grows old as the years have gone by. He put romance on the map.
This cats voice is butter baby....chances are is my favorite.
So dope OV!
Oscar Vega armando
2:40 ... i love how Mathis' voice perfectly blends out from the wind instrument (clarinet?)
Oboe
So Beautiful And Relaxing, Compared To The Bull 🤬They Play Now Days Now This Is What Good Music Should Sound Like.
My God, listen to that fade in on the words - on my own. Heavenly voice.
Joey.....I know....so lovely, right?
Silver linings playbook anyone?!
want to say 'yes', but my grandmother made me fall in love with this song first. thank you, Nanny. I love and miss you in equal amounts.
Conan O'Brien opposite for me, i watched it cuz Misty played in it 😀
no.
@@asstroeongdong-min1709 that's just beautiful 😍❤️
@@maziebunny2 bless your nanny dear
The smoothness and purity of his voice is so moving!
Hello Amy
How are you doing today?
Look at me, I'm as helpless as a kitten up a tree
And I feel like I'm clingin' to a cloud
I can't understand
I get misty, just holding your hand
Walk my way
And a thousand violins begin to play
Or it might be the sound of your hello
That music I hear
I get misty whenever you're near
Don't you know that you're leading me on?
And it's just what I want you to do
Can't you see that I'm hopelessly lost?
That's why I'm following you
On my own
When I wander through this wonderland alone
Never knowing my right foot from my left
My hat from my glove
I'm too misty, and too much in love
Too misty
And too much
Too much In love
the violins are just beautiful
I had a dream one night, johnny Mathis was onstage singing this song. I was wearing a gorgeous pink dress, with a vee neckline and long white gloves. I was dancing with a man on the dance floor. It seemed funny when i woke up, because i cant dance and i dont like to dance. It was still an awesome dream though.
Majority of the songs of Johnny Mathis are beautiful
i cant believe i found this album at the thrift store
Picked mine up at half price books. $3.00 😎
Thats where I found ALL my Johnny Mathis albums....and I HAVE THEM ALL!!!
Yoitsily you are very fortunate l have sung this song at least 500 times
Yoitsily, One of my Ma's favorite albums...still have the original copy she bought in 1959...she never sent it to the thrift store, and I always heard it while growing up....
CLASSIC! The music of yesteryear will never be forgotten, unlike the music today can't even understand anything.
Tears in my eyes
@Johnny Mathis uh oh
J'adore, pour moi et mon père Marcel, combien il aimait, c'était sa vie , la musique. xxx
We lost Jessica Walter (from Arrested Development) today. She was also in Play Misty for Me, with Clint Eastwood. Here in her honor. #rip
That's why I'm here
@@jasonmoody4219 Same here.
Mike, I'm here in Jessica's honor too. I miss her and I will Johnny, when his time comes. I guess I feel my own age creeping up on me. I won't be too long before I can saw "hello" to both of them, and have a dance with my sweet wife.
Rest In Peace, Mallory Archer!!!
Loved that movie!
I love me some Johnny Mathis!!!! What a godsend vocalist. Majestic!!!!! This particular song takes me back to an innocent time period when life was beautiful, vital and sincere. Life use to be graceful.
When you are in Heaven, you get to choose exactly what your idea of Heaven is!! Your reward. This0 is not your Home, Honey. ❤❤
Sempre me imagino num lindo salão com casais elegantemente trajados e Johnny no palco cantando esta música deixando todos ainda mais apaixonados. Ai ai... 💓
A mis 17 años ya escuchaba a jhonny Matthis. Me trae mucha nostalgia. Sus temas...
Por siempre serás escuchado.....
Hoje, amanhã e sempre!
Johnny Mathis, o eterno !
A lenda viva das belas canções românticas desse século!!
That top note is just beautiful. He was going to be a baseball player...glad he ended up a singer. Unique, lovely voice. You can spot his voice anywhere.
Rico yan and Claudine Barretto everyone 😊

I’m in a beautiful dream, please don’t wake me up.
I've been looking for this very romantic music from Johnny Mathis oh!! I found you at last ,thank you so much
Maravilhoso inesquecível obrigada...
To the young folks out here....guys and gals....listen to the lyrics while the beautiful melody is playing.
This is what romance and love is all about.
Your music today has NO soul,NO heart,NO feeling....just notice and obnoxious lyrics.
The music today is why you are all fucked up.
Change it.
It's best one Johnny, I don't know what to say..so old and so good song :)
SIMPLESMENTE MARAVILHOSO NÃO CANSO DE OUVIR ELE CANTA E NOS ENCANTA VOZ IMPECÁVEL
