The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Macini's glorious songs, the beautiful orchestra and Johnny's gorgeous vocals; magnificent!
The bygone quality of music. Thank's for such!
I have fallen in love with this man ♥ He could seriously be the greatest male singer of all time, and oh boy was he beautiful 🥰
When I was a little girl, he was one of my favorite singers. I do miss these days of yesteryear , the music was so wonderful, the talent, but this can now be only a sweet memory for this old gal.😢❤
Angelic voice. He made my LIFE sweeter as a youngster.
Johnny singing near his peak..how could it ever be less than great
His singing was so good that people thought his peak years were in the late 70s
Wonderful, wonderful! :) Johnny is still performing and touring. He turns 88 this month. I have a ticket to see one of his Christmas shows this year.
After enduring the current culture and what’s going on in our nation today, almost brings a tear to my eye that this was once on prime time TV ….
Back then the United States was in the beginning phases of the Vietnam war, race riots, civil unrest and an ugly string of political assassinations..jfk, rfk, mlk. They were not the "good old days" that people romanticize. Nonetheless, the music was beautiful.❤
@@richardbocanegra5945 Maybe, but still doesn’t change the fact this was on primetime TV.
Marvelous and stupendous, just lovely!
Mancini and Mathis magic! Bravo! Just like coffee and doughnuts and peanut butter and jelly, superb pairing.....
What a voice
The way he started the medley was so subtle and smooth. He is one of those rare talents that still has his voice. No one can imitate this master.
One of most wonderfool voices...👍
They had something missing with today's performers CLASS. I ve seen Johnny Mathis three times.
Did Mathis ever sing a duet with Connie . That would be something to see and hear . Two of the greatest singers . Both Connie and Johnny recorded the song " I'm Glad There is You " in a very similar arrangement . Connie sang it on her great 1964 album ' A New Kind of Connie ", the time when she went from singing about lipstick , cupid and boys and metamorphized into a singer of adult standards .
What an ending! And wasn't it great to see Johnny and the great Henry Mancini congratulate each other and appear with Ed at the end? 🙂
Love the songs, the music, the men who gave the magic.
Those were the good old days of television, Ed Sullivan show
The music of my life. Love you forever John Royce Mathis. ❤️
The great Johnny Mathis turned 88 this weekend. He is backed by Henry Mancini and his orchestra in this classic clip, and with all due to Andy Williams Johnny does wonderfully by all these songs. See him while you can; he will not be with us forever but, while he is, you will hear about 85% the quality of the voice you hear here.
A class act; thank you for this video! Johnny singing a medley of songs composed by Henry Mancini who, as others have mentioned, is seen here leading the orchestra.
So beautiful.
Bravo!!!❤❤❤ My mom listened to Johnny Mathis when I was a little kid...😮 those last notes on Moon River!!! 🔥🔥🔥
what a vocalist, I saw mancini in 64 in Cleveland but still have never seen Johnny. so great!
I saw Johnny last year. His voice was unchanged...and he was 87!
Dear Heart, Two for the Road, Days of Wine and Roses, Moon river
Oh my goodness just beautiful, brings back lots of memories.
I saw Johnny with Hank years ago in Michigan. Great concert! 👏👍🌹🌹♥️♥️
It simply doesn’t get any better than Johnny Mathis and Henry Mancini performing Henry’s incredible compositions. Johnny, who always gives it his all was over the top on the whole set, particularly “Moon River.”
wow, Johnny sounds fabulous!
I will never get tired listening to this
The three songs which from the very beginning typify the soft side of the 1960s.
I feel sad we cannot have a modern interpretation of this sort of music in 2024 but glad/grateful we have RUclips.
Thanks for all your beautiful songs.
❤❤❤maravilhoso te amo
JM: The King of Vibrato
We should not watch recordings such as these as we will be reminded of what has been lost since the creation. Standouts:
1) The absence of a civilized variety show for family consumption
2) Henry Mancini and Johnny Mathis - These men are the definition of professional artists to be admired and respected
3) We may appear financially wealthier as a nation today, but in many clear respects, we are much poorer and underserved in quality entertainment
4) @0:47 - 1:33 - The transition from Dear Heart to Days of Wine and Roses. So elegant and moving
Perhaps Moon River can be done as well by others, but I don't think it can be done better by anyone.
MATHIS is Greek for Gift from God.
How true! Thank You, God!/
Beautiful and with Henry Mancini!
HEAVENLY
Three movie songs by the great, great Henry Mancini, here leading his orchestra from the piano. And performed in this case by, in my opinion, one of the best crooners ever. "Dear Heart", original song from the film of the same title, directed by Delbert Mann and starring Glenn Ford and Geraldine Page, was nominated for Best Original Song at the 1964 Oscars, but lost to "Chim Chim Cheree", from film "Mary Poppins." "Days Of Wine And Roses", like "Moonriver" with lyrics by Johnny Mercer, did win the 1962 Oscar for Best Original Song. It is the main theme of the film of the same name by Blake Edwards, with Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick. And finally, what can we say about the legendary "Moonriver", sung in "Breakfast at Tiffany's" with that sensual and at the same time fragile voice of the unforgettable Audrey. This song was also the winner at the 1961 Oscars. These songs, in addition to Mathis, have been covered by many artists, so we can choose between Andy Williams, Tony Bennett, Bobby Darin, Sinatra, Billy Eckstine, etc., etc. Which version of each song do you remember most?
I think Andy Williams version of these songs are the ones I remember most, but Johnny Mathis is great.
@@60Cascade I think he is one of the few who recorded a version of each of these songs, certainly his versions are very elaborate and popular. Thanks for your comment!
@@edufau815 You bet, and thanks for asking!
CLASS
When will Johnny get a Kennedy Center Honor?
Long overdue !!!
❤
I love the instrumental bridge "Two for the Road" .. always reminds me of Audrey Hepburn and then to close with "Moon River" .. gorgeous Mancini and Johnny Mathis collaboration.. beautiful❤🎉
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Can you also after all this time upload The Supremes’ original-quality “Thoroughly Modern Millie” 1967 episode appearance, or possibly that was inaccessible although “The Happening” performance from same episode was available? 🧐
Breakfast at Tiffany, my story in a parallel universre
