    Bruce Lee was certainly a legendary martial artist. He perfected his techniques and yes also threw out what didn’t work although some film kicks and choreography was for effect. I keep hearing from people about his speed and how this all had to do with his physical exercises. Having done martial arts for 40 years now, I am in no way saying that I could match his speed, but I greatly increased my speed through meditation! Something that hardly anyone realises. Bruce himself used to spend a lot of time on meditation. Not only for concentration/ relaxation but also for training the mind to be in a reactive state. Food for thought........

    What most people seemed to not know is that in none of the footage is he even coming close to what he was capable of. His life is not threatened, there is no one trying to literally fight him to the death. He’s teaching and demonstrating don’t you get it. The guy he met at the ymca that challenged him, they thought he was dead. Bruce knocked him out cold. There’s a big difference in fighting for your life and sparring against people who are your friends and you don’t want to hurt them. And also in some of the footage he merely practicing to see what camera angles are best for movie films. I dare anyone to challenge anyone as good as he really was.

Not even close. Small amateur gathering of four-five kid-boxers with a few month of training... Not a victory which should be used as single example of martial arts legends professional fights triumph

      2) Who were the fighters? Where did you learn those details of fights? Source please.
      3) You are calling a high school kid that won some high school boxing championship a “reigning champion”. C’mon man 🤦‍♂️

    Honestly can't believe what I read sometimes. I see people on here that think he was superman, then I see people who think he was just an actor. Have you ever actually done proper research?
    Amazes me how many people seem incapable of expressing themselves reasonably.
    For me, the question isn't "was Bruce a good fighter", the question is "how good was he?". If you follow MMA, you should be able to notice his amazing technique, speed and reflexes, power, and seeming understanding of a fighting. Apparently, he enjoyed a fight too, so it wasn't like he had never been in a fight.
    I think the real question is how would he stack up to today's greats? Although BL didn't train for sport, it's like comparing athlete from the past to present, it's just pointless. People and methods evolve. But one thing is undeniable, he was advocating modern day methods 40 years ago. He was clearly ahead of the game, was associated with world kickboxing/karate champions of that time, and his contribution to martial arts as a whole is huge.
    We will never know how good of a fighter he was unfortunately.

    • @niallwatts789
      @niallwatts789 5 лет назад

      @@henryrhee47 No we don't. Unfortunately, we only have anecdotal accounts to go by. There was one interesting interview I saw with Jim Kelly (martial artist, who played Williams in Enter The Dragon), who said that there are many martial artists who are downplaying Bruce to save their own face. He saw them spar and Bruce was looking pretty sharp.
      However, back to your question, even as a huge fan, I can at least be honest enough to acknowledge we don't know if he was a good fighter for sure. I think it's safe to say, he had plenty of fights. Everyone knows this type, the one that grows up fighting all the time. There were plenty in my school, one being Michael Bisping haha.

    • @niallwatts789
      @niallwatts789 5 лет назад

      @@henryrhee47 There's nothing wrong except that anecdotal accounts will never be enough for some. They are wide open to dispute.
      And with respect, we don't KNOW. I firmly believe the man as a fighter was probably a beast, but we don't know this for certain. I wish we did, but we don't.

Bruce would comment about regular punching bags, how they weren't enough, how he needed a "real" bag, so they made that monster you see on the video. I hate to bust everyone's bubble but Bruce Lee was just a man. His contribution to the martial arts was his philosophy of eliminating traditional baggage from his training. He was a rebel among his peers for the way he thought and the students he taught. He was a great action star and a very proficient martial artist, but nonetheless a man. I have personally met and trained with Dan Inosanto and spent about two hours talking to Bob Wall about Bruce Lee the real man and not the movie icon version we all know. They both have similar stories of the real man. He was very cocky and got angry about the smallest things. He was dealing with self esteem issues just like everyone else. They also said he was friendly and outgoing but if anyone ever said anything or made him feel challenged he would snap on them. With all this being said he is the reason I started training in martial arts and the legend of the man will far out live all of us.

      henry rhee To be a great fighter, a real competitive fighter a person needs to compete, compete A LOT. And, moreover, gradually heighten the level of this competition to the very best there is.
      It is not enough to be talented, not enough to train everyday and in different systems. You need to fight serious opponents in serious competitions.
      And Bruce Lee did nothing of the sort. All he had under his real fighting belt so to say:
      One school boxing tourney with just a few kids competing including him. Not something to write home about.
      One fight with some Chinese “master” (in quotations because he also didn’t have any serious fights in his career), where it is not even clear who won.
      And one exhibition sparring in the video above (and we can’t see his face and/or be sure it was him) - again without any knowledge of his opponents’ level or skill and it was not even a real bout. Just a spar session.
      That is all there is!

But at t he end of the day...Bruce was a "traditional martial artist". Incorporated a little from many styles he thought was useful. But in the end JKD is not a "full-contact combat style"....if one isn't conditioned and trained for full-contact...in ring or street...learning "practical moves" won't help in a real situation...for fitness or competition...
    Also, there are things you can only learn if you step in a ring or have fought on the street VS only practiced in a school with fellow students who hold back and are going "with the flow". for demo purposes or practice. Bruce was never a "fighter" (amateur or professional). And the fights people say he had on the street or film sets were alleged. No video footage at all. No photos.
    Bruce was a visionary traditional martial artist/entertainer.

      Anderson C, Bruce didn't start his martial arts with Jeet kun du that was later. Bruce started teaching with a style called Jun Fan Gung Fu first a style that approached wing chung. Bruce did appear at the 1964 international karate championships, &the 1967 international karate championships. He also did have a private match with Wong Jack man. Bruce came to the United States as a martial arts instructor not as a student. Also Jim Kelly swore that Bruce Lee was untouchable he knew Bruce personally. He wasn't just an actor he was real martial artist.

      @@oldschoolhiphop2275 He didn't compete, that is the point (your statement made it sound like he did compete at the Karate championships). I am just correcting that oversight. I wasn't trying to be rude, just factual.
      Many other teachers/instructors also 'appeared' at the championships to show/demonstrate their style/skills, just like him.
      No, he didn't have to compete, nor does anyone. That however proves nothing either way.
      Yes, like many men around the world, he did get into some fights i am sure. But that in itself (as you and i were not there) really doesn't help either way.
      Point is this: He was exceptional and far above most of us in skill, and dedication (agreed). But, he was not the super-human-magical-god like figure some want to portray him as. 'But' if he was, we won't ever know, as we never saw him compete to show that skill under live/real world class opponents.

      @@hatch1892 I never said he competed. I clearly said he appeared. You talk as if Bruce was some average guy when he wasn't. Bruce also did have other fights outside the United States. He's had several undocumented fights with real Kung fu masters in China. San Francisco Chinatown Bruce has fought masters. By the time Bruce came to America he really had no competition as there was no one who could actually compete with him he was too far advanced. Many people knew this that's what the demonstrations where for. I don't care what your opinion is on Bruce but the facts are documented.
