37 years old and have hiked several trips over 20 miles many times, deep into terrain no one goes. I look back now and realize how lucky I’ve been not to have something happen to me that I could self rescue. I have 2 kids and a wife at home and now realize how dangerous my hobbies are. I don’t go out alone anymore, and even though 10mil is a warm up for me, I’d rather do that with a group than go out alone and possibly have an emergency. Missing 411 and and the loonies out there now, attacking hikers 😅. At least carry a gps device and have someone track you, also carry a gun.
If you go out on your own, 1. Text a few people beforehand letting them know exactly where you going, include a google maps pin 2. Carry a fully charged phone with you, ensure you have GPS tracking enabled and allow the family to track you online 3. Carry a personal locator beacon (PLB) with Satellite Messenger & SOS feature, examples of these are Spot X, Garmin InReach Mini, Garmin/DeLorme InReach 4. Carry a hydration backpack full off water & fill its pockets with some energy bars & a space blanket. The above 4 simple things will greatly improve you being found quickly & surviving.
False statement. You can hike Whitney year round. No quota after Nov. 1, but a permit is still required. The road to the trailhead closes, so you just have to park further down and walk in. They close the roads during the winter, but the trails are still open year round.

This story is incredibly sad but it happens time and time again. I have not yet been to whitney but I've done plenty of research and there is no such thing as a "quick day hike" on that trail.
@@karinr5168 The other thing is Loma Linda is basically at sea level. Then she drives to Lone Pine 4000' elevation, then to the portal, which is above 8,000'. If you are used to it, you can do it, but if you aren't, your brain and motor functions aren't going to work properly. I know, I've done sea level to 11,000' in a day (after being at sea level for a while). I saw the rock ahead of me, I knew what to do, step over it. When I got to the rock, my leg didn't do what I desired, and I fell in a pile of sharp rocks. No injuries other than cuts and bruises. But that's me, I live at 5000' elevation, and was down to sea level for a couple weeks. You gotta know about this stuff before you go for a "day hike."
