This story is as good as the lady that brought a blind cat home from the shelter and on the first night she heard a racket downstairs and found a broken window with some blood. She called the police and a short time later the burglar was apprehended. He was drinking in a bar close by - covered in cat scratches! Great job, Joey!

Squirrels are very territorial. When a friend of mine and her partner moved into their newly purchased home, a squirrel who lived in their new backyard and thought it belonged to him, began to pummel everyone who ventured into it with pinecones. LOL So, they named him "General."

I would’ve changed my mind, too. Squirrels have those giant buck teeth meant for cracking nutshells. I can’t imagine how much damage they could do if they were actively attacking you.
I had a pet squirrel when I was a child. He was the sweetest little guy...had to be or my mom would not have tolerated him in the house. His favorite place to sleep was mom's apron pocket. He would climb up her skirt and crawl in while she did her housework (it was the 50's). I even had pro portraits done with my squirrel. They can be wonderful pets.

Michelle Hartnett Very true! Mine will try to attack my boyfriend. I am the only one allowed to enteract with them because I am/was their sole caregiver who raised them and now they are very protective of me and their home.
Michelle Hartnett and some can bite, which you need to be extremely cautious, cause some squirrels do carry diseases, like rabies or the bubonic plague.
As kids we lived in a large wooded family compound along the Mississippi River, which had lots of oak trees -- and therefore squirrels. If there were orphaned baby squirrels, my grandparents and parents (dedicated conservationists, even in those days in the early 1950s) had us kids care of them, feed them, until they could be released safely back into the wild. Over the years, we had a yardful of tame squirrel visitors who remembered the care they had received from us.😊
I love those videos where animals get reunited with a previous caregiver. One of a tiger sticks out and he stands up on 2 legs and just hugged the human, rubbing his head and purring. It was so awesome!
My dad brought home an injured baby chipmunk in '94. We named him Alvin, and nursed him back to health, and eventually released him in the wild near our family cabin. He came to visit us for a couple of years after we released him. He would actually come in the cabin and climb on us, or eat out of our hands. He eventually got massive and lost an eye in a fight presumably. He was special.
Choo Choo Chucky and Choo Choo Story channels are full of videos from Canada where a married couple have been feeding wild chipmunks for about five years. They definitely have different personalities. Chucky gets special treatment and comes to the door to eat and socialise with the couple.
I'm going to be an animal rehabilitationist when I get my job, they say not to touch wild animals if you can help it because they will trust you and become dependent and then think it's best to trust others that actually want to harm them, it's best to leave them wild if you can help it. But I'm glad and so pround that your dad nursed the chipmunk back to life. Such bravery and courage to do something so sweet to an innocent creature who means nothing but pure care and love. I'm sorry to hear that he lost an eye, animals deal with more pain than we do. I saw a tail of a squirrel, like the fur part somewhere and I was stunned if the squirrel was surviving without it.
That doesn't surprise me! Several years ago a squirrel chose me as a friend and I don't know why but he would come right up to me, only me and nobody believed me! I love this story
I have the same experience. One particular squirrel comes up to my door and waits for me to respond. I thought the squirrel wanted some nuts, which I have given her a few times, but now the squirrel just seems to want to be in my company. She does not eat any nuts that I put down. It's really weird... :)
I have Marvin! He is very curious around me. When I point at him and say "You're wacky", he jumps around and does tree to ground acrobatics, with spinning back flips n' all! (
My squirrel named Kevin wears a diaper. It's the cutest thing ever. He can't be released in a wild because hes blind in one eye and only has 3 and a half legs. He was a little baby that was caught in a fire. It burned his extremities. Didn't think he was gonna make it but we kept bottle feeding him and giving him antibiotics. My wife is a veterinarian and amputated his little burnt foot. He still alive today. He's 2 years old and the happiest little guy ever. ❤
Your wife is living my ideal life - being a veterinarian and saving animals. I'm lowkey jealous. 😫 Edit: also, in case you/her/anybody is interested, I used to have a paralyzed rat that my Dad built a tiny wheelchair for. I also had a hairless rat who he knitted a little sweater for (it gets pretty cold in my country - Canada). I also once rescued a wild rat who'd been attacked by an owl, and he drove him about 6 hours away to a wildlife sanctuary (there are rat sanctuaries in my city now, don't worry).
@@Hollyucinogen That is so cute about your little nakie rat having a sweater 😊 If you don't become a vet there are other (easier) ways to work with animals. You can volunteer at zoos and wildlife rehabilitation clinics and animal rescues and shelters. I became a wildlife biologist and enjoyed many years in the outdoors studying fish and wildlife. There are many seasonal jobs that you don't need advanced degrees or training for too. I'm not as familiar with Canada, but there are likely many government agencies that need field workers. Can confirm! I've had 2 pet squirrels over the years, and they would only ever perch on my dad or myself. God forbid if anyone but us tried to pick them up... This is such a great story. We had a gray squirrel as a pet inside our house too. His name was Frank. She attacked a few people and bit them because they were strangers and invading his territory. He bit and scratched three different people. One because she teased him all night long and in the morning he busted out of his cage and ran up to her and bit her! The other one was a neighbor kid who was running all over our house and walking on the furniture, Frank got up on his back and scratched him up pretty good and the last time was when he almost ran out the front door and the neighbor put her hand down the same time my mom did to stop him, and he bit the neighbor but not my mom. They are very protective and they are darling pets!
I know it's old but you know, wild squirrels are absolutely terrifying if provoked. I'm a wildlife rehab student and once they get to be a certain size, the center suggests wearing leaver gloves like what you'd wear to handle a small raptor. Nothing is quite as intimidating as a squirrel growling at you and squaring up for a fight. As odd as that sounds, it's true.
How embarrassing knowing that you got attacked and stopped by a squirrel?! He'll be the laughing stock of the state prison! In all seriousness, good job Joey! You rock!
When I was a kid my mom had a platform built right outside of the kitchen window so that she could feed the squirrels while she was cooking. We hung some bells out there and the squirrels would come up and ring the bells to get fed. It was pretty cool
What a cute mascot! My squirrels prefer the trees in our yard instead of our house. We have trees all around the edges of our 4 acres and we love to watch them run through the branches of one tree to another. They are amazing little acrobats.

Squirrels are amazing. Today I had neighborhood cat stalking a friendly squirrel while he was eating seeds under my bird feeder. The cat was about 2 ft away and suddenly lunged, chasing the squirrel who stopped nearby in a tomato plant pot. The cat stopped and hid behind another pot keeping their eyes glued to each other. Suddenly the squirrel did these push up moves in a threatening manner and chased after the cat. It was hilarious!
My cat caught a squirrel when she was around one year old. The squirrel kicked her ass, and she hasn't chased squirrels since. That was about 14 years ago.
I'd hope so, but did you catch the end of the video? It's too bad the squirrel's favorite food are those Whoppers candies. But maybe if he gave Joey a giant bag of Whoppers as a reward, he would get so sick of them it would permanently cure his junk food habit.
My squirrel Zosi "2008-2013" was exactly the same. Although he could be very possessive, I would take him on daily walks and bike rides and people would constantly come up wanting pictures etc, and he would never attack anyone. "I wouldn't let people hold him for safety and legal reasons" but sometimes people would get too close and he'd run up their leg or something, just playfully. But things were very different when it came to my son or any girl I brought home. Basically he would become jealous and possessive. Nothing serious tho, just flicking his tail and making quick jabs at whoever he didn't want around me. But then one day my son came over while I was still at class and thought he would just play my computer for the hour until I got home, but the moment he stepped inside the house without me, he saw Zosi and thought he'd just ignore him like usual, but this time Zosi immediately charged and leapt on him, ran up and around to his back and started to scratch his neck area "minor superficial ones" but my son panicked and instinctivly grabbed him to throw him off, and the moment he did that, Zosi bit down and chewed his finger so hard that it fractured his finger bone. It was the only time he had ever hurt anyone. After that incident, I had to get a large cage for when my son came over because even if I was home after that, Zosi just didn't like or trust him anymore. Another time, while on one of the walks or bike rides we would do together daily, usually with a harness and leash, but this day we were walking and two pit bulls charged down a driveway while the dogs owners were bringing in groceries and in that split second, my Zosi immediately ran down from the top of my hat "where he liked to hang out" and ran straight at the charging dogs. Worried he'd be killed, I had to jerk him back so he flew backwards, but he got the message and ran back onto my shoulder ready to fight, madly flicking his tail while the dogs viciously barked circling around us just about a foot away. His brave little soul wouldn't back down from anything that he thought was a danger to me. I really miss him dearly.

Thats funny because I had a squirrel that was the same way, kind of. She was fine with my husband and my daughter- my husband was tall and her favorite activity was to hide somewhere high and jump onto his shoulder when he wasn't paying attention- but for some reason she was having no part of my teenage son. He'd always been nice to her and of course, wanted to play with her like everyone else and was very gentle but she just had it in for him. He's always been very calm and quiet so it wasn't his demeanor.
We had a pet squirrel. Raised from a just barely fuzzy pup. We named it Rocky from the cartoon show with Bullwinkle. Rocky was always playing/teasing our cats. They all got along well. When Rocky matured we discovered that he was she! Then the name changed to Rockette. SHE was always very defensive of anyone until we told her they were ok. Then, she would accept them and be her normal squirrel self begging for treats and getting all kinds of attention. At some point, she decide she wanted to make more squirrels and she bolted out the door, made a boy friend and had a family. She would always bring the kids around for treats and attention but, over time, kind of faded away. She was always missed but, we felt better once we had our pet blue jay, named BJ,or course. BJ also played with the cats and was one heck of a door bell. BJ was a clown and would imitate our telephone ringer when we were in the shower. Dare bird! Got the wife out of the shower a dozen time doing that! BJ also would do the Wolf Whistle and Hey You whistle. He did it when the kids were walking home from school and confused the heck out of the girls! The girls first were looking to see who was doing that and then saw BJ on the wife's shoulder. They were instantly tickled to meet him. He lived a long life of about 10 years and in his last few his feathers went from blue and black to almost all white. We had many pets such as above but also a dog, and some turtles and snakes and a brown bat, or two. Yes. We have a very strange family and there is rarely a dull moment in our house. LOL
Before you all head out to buy a squirrel, there is one thing you need to understand: they cannot be house broken. They will relieve themselves wherever and whenever they feel like it, and that includes while they are climb all over you.
Also they’re not fully domesticated so your chances of training them aren’t that high it’s the same way you can’t train every cat but there’s still a few exceptions to the rule.

squirrels are known to attack and kill rattlesnakes. Squirrels are immune to the venom.

I had a squirrel foster baby for a while. When she would playfight, she was gentle, but she could still do damage with her teeth, even through gloves. I can only imagine how much it would hurt to have one actually trying to mess you up
Same here .I fostered one , he loved to be up high on my shoulder.
If they can bite thru hardship nuts you can imagine what damage to soft tissue. Their claws & strong grip are something too.
That should be HARDSHELL nuts but my Google asst doesn't agree 😕
@@maryvaughn7886 Hahaha! I like it, I was trying to figure out what the heck you could've been replying to when I saw the preview
@@maryvaughn7886 he was so tiny the size of my hand. It would always run up my back and shoulder . It's scared me at first but I got use to him
This story warms my heart!! I am a squirrel lover myself, feed them daily as well as the birds and a couple chipmunks. Being around them for a few years I noticed they do have different personalities as well as looking a bit different. A couple of the squirrels are very dark haired, and some are very orange etc.......Some get spooked easily and a couple don't care at all when I am around! It really is fascinating to me how the animals around us have different qualities that set them apart from each other. I wish I could one as a pet but they are too wild for that. Thanks for sharing this story------God bless you
Be care I feed the squirrels and now i have rats and under my car hood too😫
It would be weird if they didnt have different personalities. Why do people assume thats something exclusive to humans? Were not that special. Were just really smart apes.
@@aliekatsmom I haven't had any problems thus far. I have been warned a lot about many different issues that could happen. I am fine with feeding them, if a problem comes up I will deal with it then...............I enjoy this, can't I have ONE thing in my life I can enjoy?!? Why do people always want to rain on my parade?!? Just kidding, I am in an ornery mood today. Take care now
Now this guy can say he has a squirrel who guards his house! Love this story! 😂❤😂
LOL LOL LOL oh that must've been hysterical to watch!!!
My cat caught a squirrel when she was around one year old. The squirrel kicked her ass, and she hasn't chased squirrels since. That was about 14 years ago.
Although I love cats, they're unfortunately responsible for the most new extinct species of any animal other than humans.
Getting some reps in for a pump. 💪on that 🐈
My cat makes squirrelly noises. I’ve also seen a cat who stood on her haunches like a squirrel when looking at them outside.
"So how did you get caught?"
"Damn squirrel"
"What?"
"You heard me"
😂😂
Oh, Joey. You're just sooo adorable. Well done protecting your family, and your house!!. Animals, never cease to amaze us. Gorgeous story. ❤🤗
The lady’s face when he says “I liked squirrel nuts growing up” 💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀
He's not a rodent!! He's a hero!!!🐿️
Yeah!❤
I mean, he IS a rodent... He's a hero rodent lol
Still a rodent
I think someone just earned an extra few slices of avocado and acorns.
I'd hope so, but did you catch the end of the video? It's too bad the squirrel's favorite food are those Whoppers candies. But maybe if he gave Joey a giant bag of Whoppers as a reward, he would get so sick of them it would permanently cure his junk food habit.
@@stcmww5056I don't know. Sick of Whoppers, is that possible?
@@stcmww5056 Ha, I didn't realise they were candies! I kept thinking, why would a squirrel want a burger?? 😹
For years, I've been curious about why people would have pet squirrels. They are incredibly cute, but in my home? Your story made me tear up!😥🙂 Now I want a squirrel!😁
@@carolking1502 and to all those that say just grab it by the tail or whatever and slam it against the wall, good luck ! those little bastards are extremely hard to "just grab" as the intruder found out !!
@@SirManfly "slam it against the wall"...No! I catch and release the occasional mouse! My friend feeds a squirrel at her office. There's a feral cat she also feeds. The squirrel and cat often eat dinner together out of the same bowl. They're adorable!
You NEVER slam any living creature against a wall!!
LOL
I really enjoyed this story about Joey and his owner in Idaho. All gun safes should be guarded by squirrels.
Yeah Rodents are incontinent right?
Also somes States it's illegal to have a pet 🐿
I'd rather just let them be free and enjoy their lives outside!
And they can carry a few diseases that we can catch.
This is truly funny! Anyone who's had a squirrel as a pet or friend knows just how smart they really are so this doesn't really surprise me .... but I can't stop thinking that a little fuzzy 2 pound rodent actually got a grown man to leave the house he was robbing lol
Really? 😮 How fascinating!
nexus169 i didn’t know squirrels were that fucken ballsy omg 😹😹
Abida Babida that's exactly how I feel. Lol your comment needs more likes. I'm glad everyone is safe.
I bet these reporters are so grateful to be reporting on stories such as this one.
I hope that squirrel has lived an awesome and wholesome life ❤
The fact he actually has a gun safe is so respectable. Joeys so cute
He had to lock up the gun or Joey might have shot the theif😊😂❤
Yes!!!. Very responsible. 🧡
Depending on the state I think they're legally required
FWIW - that's not a safe, per se. It's a lightweight security cabinet. I have the same thing, and don't expect it to keep even a semi-competent burglar out for more than a couple minutes.
Joey needs his own RUclips channel!😀
TEX SUN then Sparta the Cat will get jealous and go after Joey
Great story! I loved it so much I had to share this story with my friend's! ❤🌹
I rescued a baby squirrel about a week ago and I had a friend coming look at him and he tried to attack my friend and my friend said can I pick him up and I said please don't because he is obviously very upset and I made my friend leave LOL I wasn't trying to be mean but I don't want my baby to be upset and I've only had him a week but with me and my son! He is very sweet! He looks like he's only a few months old! And we have so much fun playing !!! Thank you for your video because I feel even safer now! I am a single woman living in government housing and I think my squirrel is going to be my little guardian angel
Shannon 222 make sure you feed him properly....
@@stacyrich113 after the second week my little squirrel was strong enough and he was starting to get Territorial and he attacked me and bit me so I took him out to the woods and tried releasing him and he was more than happy to go so I do not have him anymore and I've been going out there several times a day and leaving snacks and apples and stuff and feeding the wildlife too LOL but he is happy and gone and thank you for your comment hugs hugs hugs

This isn’t surprising to me because I actually had a pet squirrel in college. He was a rescue because he & his sister were rejected as babies, and my roommate & I rescued them. I turned my boy over to a rescue group, but he was a wonderful squirrel that imprinted on me, and I loved him very much.
Joey is a cutie ♥️♥️♥️ I raised a squirrel and he was my baby for 2 years I let him go in my back yard and he made babies and had a great life. The squirrels in my neighborhood had white bellies and my Rhett had an orange belly. There were no white belly squirrels born after his release they all still have orange belly’s for these 20 years. He left a legacy ♥️♥️♥️
that's an absolutely horribly negligent idea if you took a prey animals sense of fear and put them back into the wild, why the hell would you do that? that's a death sentence
and not just that but getting them used to human company, protection and resources to a world where people are allowed to murder them and all kinds of violence to them
@@astral_hazehe was obviously fine Most animals prefer to be outdoors when they can care for themselves
Reading this after learning that white bellies are endangered, and the red bellies are taking over. 😱
@@nanhand99 did you even read what I said? the whole reason it's bad to release pets is because they have problems taking care of themselves. wild animals are afraid of humans because they fear potential predators. pets are trained to stop being afraid of strange big animals who can kill them, and trained to get food from humans instead of the normal way. it's lazy, self centered and careless to just give up and leave them outside to fend for themselves after *you* chose to alter their behavior to be a pet
1:55 “he usually doesn’t bite but you never know I mean he is a squirrel heheh😅”
Joey: “HAHA😈”
