The reason is that tournaments have to actually end. They changed their time rules because of people playing 15-20 minutes after time to finish the current turn and the next 2 turns. Then current turn led to issues because the turn player got a BP, leading to slow play so it wouldn't switch back till time. Now it's at the end of the current phase.
If you just passed back and forth like in chess that wouldn't work because you can do actions on the opponent's turn. Plus in chess, I'm pretty sure you just lose if your timer runs out. Master Duel has shown how shitty of a way that is to lose.

    • @jk844100
      @jk844100 Год назад +4

@@DoctorOaks you don’t always lose in chess if you run out of time.
There are things called “run out of time Vs. Insufficient material”. Which means you ran out of time but there is no combination of moves that your opponent could perform in order to beat you. You had the game won but ran out of time.
      That results in a draw.

A thing I read once is that a way to improve ygo's time rules is to make the game end at the end of your opponent's turn.
Right now it's at the end of your current phase, but if it was at the end of your opponent's turn, then both players would actually hurry up to pass the turn to the opponent, and get the last turn.
Chances are, the games will end much faster, neither player would be incentiviced to stall even for a bit as to be as efficient as possible, etc.

I was playing when this was still a rule and frankly time has told that the current rules are better.
Not for player satisfaction but because in tournament setting the rounds would go to long which was a problem for other players who wanted to start their round or for and more importantly venue booking. This did also help save Players time who would spend a superfluous amount of time at events.
From a gameplay standpoint it’s the better choice but irl settings it’s been a big help.

I have said it before and I said it again time rules are dumb as fuck hp total is a pissppoor representation of who would win a game if played out and at that. If someone in the chess community seriously came along and said "hey guys our tournements are getting way too long because people take to long on their turn so lets just give two people a combined 30 minutes and randomly count material at the end point to see who is winning" he would get laughed out of the room and rightly so. and that is WITH material on board being a 1 billion times better representation compared to hp total in yugioh.
Of course turn switching on a chess clock is slightly harder to get done and the process would have to be modified a bit for passing priority e.g. you would probably switch your own clock on during an opponents combo for a response but even that could make duelling more smooth. not as smooth as the brain of the person who desinged time rules though

In an in-person tournament you have a round timer, usually of 45 to 50 minutes to complete your best of three match. If you run out of time then time is called. What happens next depends on the card game.
Some tcgs and things right then and there and make the game a draw. Some give you X additional turns for people to win the game before it is declared a draw. Yu-Gi-Oh says currently that whoever has more life points at the end of the phase wins. Thus a time card, like those explained and explored in this video, are cards to let you gain LP or inflict direct damage so you can cheat out a win at the last second.

I had a big argument with the HJ and Konami when I was judging Edison at our nationals and YCS Utrecht over the time rules. Sadly, it makes perfect sense to use modern policy. If we use old rules, the public events last significantly longer because some table is going to a fat overtime every round.

O.K. I feel kind of dumb, but are time rules different in OCG? Or are the current rules different? I never heard of these "End of phase" rules. We always do "extra turn" when we run out of time then go by life.

So I got to use the Agave Damage to win. This was a playground format and I was playing a deck comprised of 3 Branded Structures and some cheap things I bought online. I was able to get out Mirrorjade early so my graveyard with the Branded Dragons. my opponent destroyed my backrow and I had a set Waking Dragon. to flex I brought out Agave. One of us had to wrap it up to go to class but I Agave burnt him just enough for me to win.

mikanko runs axe of fools and it is the worst time card in the deck
it negates an opponents monster, gives it 1000 attack and during your standby phase burns for 500, its good it turns mikanko rivalry into a time card a monster negate and a spell negate with angel ring, but if you just need a time card you just grab mikanko spiritwalk instead because it burns instantly

    • @jeremycarromero5302

It kind of depends on what deck you play, etc. But since typically players like playing combo decks and these decks can take a lot of time doing there combos, both players can end up using all the time you have in the round. Since the current time rules in YGO state that whoever has the most LP at the end of the phase, in which time was called (like MP), you can use a card or effect to gain life or burn life from your opponent. Since you would have more LP than your opponent, you would win that game per the time rules.

I remember back before the Time rule was a thing and my friend and I were dueling in this local tournament in 2007 he was playing some beast deck and I was playing water pile with random nonsense I had lost game 1 but won game 2 because my friend didn’t read Neo Spacian Grand Mole and tried to bring it out with some card that brought a beast monster before we both realized that for some odd reason it was a ROCK game 2 goes to me because a judge called time and saw what happened after he asked for him, judge also called the round since our game was taking a while tells us in game 3 first to inflict damage or gain life points wins game 3, I went first and the first card I played was Goblin Thief a card that inflicts 500burn damage and lets you gain 500 life points , my friend couldn’t believe it, and yeah I was the guy who played all kinds random shit like dice jar and barrel behind the door because I thought it was funny.

I’m actually sick of the time rule and end of match procedure as are a lot of players, it is stupid and unfair. Konami needs to change it back to the way it was where both players get an extra turn and add for bigger tournaments that after the third round it changes to single elimination.
