I never spent a certain amount of money for only one card. But in my early Yu-Gi-Oh days, I did exchange my Game Cube with one game I don't remember for a box of sorted cards. One of those cards was a first edition Blue-Eyes Toon Dragon from Dark Beginning 1, which I don't have anymore because I gave away the binder where it was to my nephew years ago.

Ygo players always talking about being gatekept by decks that cost 500 dollars ignore that the most played competitive formats in magic cost 2-6 times that at minimum. S:p out of a series of 10 matches(as a very small sample size) will be less relevant than a card like Thrust, Fenrir, Accesscode, Baronne, and Prosperity yet it commands a price tag above the rest of them upon release date? The other was when a Japanese set had a "ghost rare"-style reprint of a certain Rayquaza card from a past sub-set, but the English game didn't get the subset until AFTER the extremely rare reprint so it was the only version of that card to exist. This stems from two factions: TCG Konami bumping the rarities of many cards in core sets and ruining the OCG's rarity system for sets. Horus and Snake-Eye are far easier to collect in the OCG since most are common and rare with only 3-4 cards at most taking up super or ultra rare slots. Over in TCG anything of value is anything less than super rare. Not to mention odds for pulling valuable stuff is lower in TCG since there are fewer packs per box and you'll only get one card in each pack that is a super rare or better.
The other faction is the section of the community who blindly buy into every set of relative value to get hundreds of worthless bulk for some needlessly rare cards.

I think one of the really big issues is the TCG rarity bumping cards for their initial release. When the OCG prints an intended staple, cards like Little Night and Droplett, they tend to release in multiple standard rarities in the set. TCG tends to take those cards and shove them up to the rarity ceiling that the OCG released them at. Somebody at Konami probably has some bad excuse about needing the space for TCG exclusives, but those cards and decks tend to be critically undersupported till the OCG gets them, so I don't exactly find that compelling.

As a general rule of thumb I never spend more than 20eur on a single card, so far it has worked out for my engagement level with the game. If prices are too high I usually just wait for a reprint - that is one thing this game does better than say magic.

I watched the price drop from £350 down to £200 and stop there for over a month, so I decided the time was right and went in, deciding it could only go up as a collectable in the long run…

Considering owning prosperity made playing a bunch of decks much more playable I'd say it was more worthwhile to pay the staples tax than the deck core tax.

The most I have ever spent on a single card in any card game was 30 USD for Tapu Lele GX back in 2018. For those unaware, Tapu Lele GX was the big-money support Pokemon for the SUM era of Pokemon. For the longest time, the regular print was hovering around 70-80 each until prices got to the point that 30 USD was a steal. Not only did it search for a supporter upon hitting the bench, it also had a generic attack that was good plus it lacked a weakness. Most decks required at least two copies. Thankfully the last time a support Pokemon hit that price was Dedenne GX but it's price tanked when it got a release in the Trainers Toolkit.
As for Pokemon now? You could almost every top deck in the format for under 80 USD except for Charizard ex but that should run you less than 120 now.
