- I went down to the Tahoe Keys Marina for the 5th annual South Lake Tahoe classic wooden boat show, and I got to see a bunch of great antique boats and classic boat reproductions; and got to talk to the passionate people who restore and care for these amazing boats.
I got to talk to John Walti, the vice-commodore of the vintage division of the California Speedboat Association, who showed me the FT Barron perpetual trophy with every race winner since the club was founded in 1934. I also got to talk to the owners of the 1924 gold-cup racer the "Baby Skipalong", which was widely considered to be the fastest boat on Lake Tahoe in the late 1920s. I got to talk to the owner of a reproduction 1938 Ventnor Gold-cup boat that was originally designed to carry a 500Lbs bomb in it's bow; as well as the builder of of a reproduction B-Racing Runabout from the early 1950s.
By far the most famous boat I saw there was George Whittell Jr's famous 60ft wooden Yacht "The Thunderbird". Launched in 1940, by a man so rich he owned pretty much the entire east shore of Lake Tahoe, the Thunderbird represents the absolute hight of art deco wooden boat design. - Авто/Мото
Surprised you weren’t more impressed at these historical works of art.
I use to be good friends with someone back in my school days 1967 / 1973. That had found and started to restore a 500ft tug boat in a old grave yard of ships up in NJ. I spent every summer helping out to learn master cabinet work. It took several years to get it restored to running condition. They found this old tug right after WW-2 while searching for work in late 1948. My friend’s grandfather bought it in 50. He had found a ship junk yard and ended up working there. I learned a lot about boat building on beautiful old wood ships. I remember when they got hold of a motor built in the 60’s to use, it looked so small compared to the original set up. We ended up building a special cabin for the skipper. I miss working on those old wooden boats.
Did you mean a “50”ft tug boat?
500ft seems kind of big for a tug boat lol
That was one of favorite shows of yours. I just love the old wooden boats and their history.
Nice balance between stories and crafts. Well done video
Highly recommend the tour of the Whittell Estate , the highlight is the Poker room with so much history of mega high stakes games. A small door in the room is access to a tunnel cut through solid rock that leads to the dock where the Thunderbird is stored, truly epic...
Absolutely gorgeous woody!! Wow!! 😊
Thunderbird. I've seen it out on the lake and at the dock. You can recognize it from a mile away out on the lake by the roostertail and the sound. Amazing boat.
Never see enough of the old wooden cruisers at these shows. The Thunderbird was built by John Hacker in Bay City, Michigan. Truly a one-off boat that is simply just fabulous!
That Thunderbird boat! What a magnificent beauty!
Blue is going out of style Red is the new great color!
🇺🇸
I would love to see an entire video just on the thunderbird. I keep seeing little bits of that boat and am now seriously into it lol
How s the way that guy described the Thunderbird, his history with it and his cruise on it th at morning... beautiful... the art of talking is going....
LOVELY WOODEN BOATS DELICOUS
The Thunderbird is soooo awesome what a boat WOW, I was hoping to see a Chris - Craft boat I have several advertisements 1946 for Chris - Craft which I've always found interesting I like the style of the boats.
I like wooden boats, they look very pretty
That hat makes the Vice-Commodore (wow) look like a Duffus.
Red is the new blue !
I would like to have seen more boats, the story behind the boats are great maybe if you can edit some of the stories to shorten them and more boats and there power plants.
Would have been nice to include the ACBS in the title being they put on the show and shows across the country. And fiberglass is welcome. The boat in my avatar is a Best Race Boat winner.
I enjoyed this very much!
Yeah, there was a bit of talking, and I'd love to have seen some walk-throughs of boats like the Thunderbird, and would love to know more about specs on rare boats like the Shanty 2...but other than that, I thought this was well made.
I tried to enter my boat, Cirrohsis of the River, but they turned me down.
Scott Courts is such a humble, wise and talented person, he really knows his stuff.. My father built MY SIN's engine and I rigged her under his guidance. She turned out absolutely gorgeous and is running stronger and stronger to this day. Really a proud moment.
The last race by CSA on Lake Merritt was July 4th 1988, The Dr. Barron Trophy was a race for hydroplane boats only. The winner of the trophy for that day was Harry Craycroft of Concord, Ca. with a 5.0 liter hydro named "Hydro Therapy". I thought that this information could be used as an update.
That boat was on gull lake in Minasota
thanks for the last comment! keep it clean. keep it real in the feel alright!
Well in 1942 my cousins brother uncle earl walter junior one summer decided he sure would like to get himself a nice brand new shiny speedboat so he asked his daddy for an advancement on his allowance so with money in hand he raced down to chuck and Larry's marina boat sales and put in an order for the slickest water rocket this side of the Mississippi. Now remember folks $50000 was a lot of money in them days..... To be continued!
cool
Looking forward to covering this with you this year.
wow how relaxing and sooooo very nice 😀😀
Nice work Jack!
Thanks for the video...I have been several times and it is amazing how beautiful and dedicated the owners, restorers and staff.
And the money invested in the boats is also ama$$ing. I mean BIG money. The show is a must see...and you CAN view a bunch of it w/out paying the HIGH entrance fee from the beach/walk way.
But if you decide to pony up the $20-50 dollars you will enjoy yourself. You should prepare yourself for egos larger than Lake Tahoe. As well as the "attitudes" of most the boat owners is not, well, normal. But roll with them...they do feel they are superior to others so humor-em.
But you will find some {25 +-%} still open, fun and friendly.
Enjoy,
Richard
I will be mad a lot of nice people. Humble and very kind in certain ways. they inviting me on their boats, anybody took me to lunch. and then this guy took me across the
lake. I sing a song or two to pay them for my lunch and they were happy they wanted to pay me a bunch but I said no no no have fun thanks for the ride across the lake and lunch see you again soon bye bye
The space ship boat at 3:24
wow
Would have been nice if there was much less talking and much more shots of the boats. Virtually no footage of the boats from a distance to see the overall shape of these beautiful boats.
The host, Jack Durst, looks and sounds like Rick Moranis' illegitimate bastard love child with long hair...sweet lookin wooden boats though!!
Can you pass the Grey Pophoun,?

nice bio
this guy needs to show some boats and drink a big glass of Shutthefuckup" its yummolicious !
Too much talking, not enough showing the boats. The caption is wooden boat classic, not we're all going to try and be youtube stars.
I had a tug ...............boat
Not enough view of the boats and too much of people yacking! Why not show the boat they're talking about whilst they're talking instead of wasting time shown the person, we don't need to see them to hear them but we do need to see the boats!!!
"A annual"?????? An annual sir!!!! English, please, TUT, TUT.
◉ 石巻でも。。ショーヤリタイネ!。m◉
I don't understand... exposed polished aluminum, v8 egines, superchargers, high speed crafts, racing paint jobs.
This event should have more heavy metal and tattooed dare devils in leather jackets, not soft jazz and pompous elders in khaki shorts.
Blah Blah
We used to have brilliant, talented, craftsmen, and now we have ignorant unions and absolutely no craftsmanship.
20 bucks expensive? What do you get for $20 these days? I don't think that the ice cream licking public appreciate what is involved in organising shows such as these, public liability insurance alone would be in the thousands.
More video time spent on your mug than on the boat.
boring af
Less speeches, more boats. No one tunes in to listen to commentators. The video hardly even depicts some great boats in favor of self-aggrandizement . . .
Too many talking heads and not enough boats!
This is a disgusting show of the arrogance of mankind. All motor boats should be banned from Lake Tahoe as well as all future development. It is a crime to trash this gem of a lake with human exploitation.
