One of a Kind Antique Race Boats (in a no wake zone)

  • Rare antique wood race boats that started the sport, and won the World Cup.
    A collection of videos that capture the sound of the boats. Many of the engines are historically significant, and don’t exist anywhere else.
    THE BOATS ARE IN A "NO WAKE ZONE !" I am filming boats from the shore, in that no wake zone. A "WAKE" IS THE WAVE MADE BY A BOAT AS IT TRAVELS. A no wake zone means don't make those waves, in that location. I am in that location. Very simple concept. A Minnesota 1st grader can understand why boats go at an idle speed, in a no wake zone.

    I run my boat in a couple poker runs each year they are around 100 miles and they have 2 classes, over 100 mph and under 100 mph and there are some very beautiful boats there and I would say the average price is around 275K per boat. Tons of speed huge HP everywhere and its fun! THESE BOATS take all of that to another level, when you look at these boats and what it actually took to build them its darned hard to even imagine today! Like was already said these boats are truly pieces of functional art in every way!!!

      Yes, that's true. I could have gone along with one boat, to film it on the big lake, but would have missed the other 99. You're right, we wouldn't hear them run, without adding in the audio later. You are a lot smarter than the average viewer. Thank you, I was beginning to worry about people. You picked up a lot of the slack for them.

    What is the point of owning such classics and never taking them above idle?

    • @gulllakeful
      @gulllakeful  3 года назад +8

      You do know there are laws that don't allow you go above idle in a no wake zone? it makes sense they aren't breaking the law. These guys did race them, even blowing an engine once in a while. Probably not anymore. Cannot be replaced. Many of the engines are valued at a half million dollars. Some are more expensive than that, and one of a kind. Most people would put the engine on a display in a museum. The Smithsonian would bend over backwards to have one of these boats.
      WHY BOTHER HANGING UP THE SPIRIT OF ST. LOUIS IF YOUR NOT GOING TO FLY IT? You would be silly to ask that question.
      It hangs on a ceiling. It's good we still keep these things from our past.
      You have to go the the Smithsonian Museum to see the Wright Brothers plane...they don't start the engine for you.
      (Plus, nobody died, flying that plane, it changed history, but did not require the balls of a winning Gold Cup boat pilot).
      I get to watch the Wright Brothers' boat go by, hear the engine they transformed into a marine engine.
      All or Alexander Graham Bell's items are in museums. I get to touch the boat he designed in his lab, and hear it run. I see all these boats crashing through waves on the lake often.
      What an incredible thing, that anybody would even drive a museum piece on the water. There are many idiots on the lake, it's dangerous.
      Thank you to the boat owners and skippers that share with the rest of us!

    When the one boat with the appeared to be a V12 or 16 gave it some revs the narrow beam boat twisted about 30 degrees about its fore/aft center line. That’s a lot of engine momentum transfer . Narrow beam made it a little easier to twist compared to later designed 3 point hydros.

      Out of all the race boats, that one probably creates the most adrenaline.
      I had a buddy who built one from the blueprints in a Popular Mechanics magazine.
      He borrowed a 25hp two stroke motor, and took it out on a river.
      He returned the motor, with the boat for free. It was way too scary, and too fast, even with a 25 horse.
      It literally rides on the prop, and requires skill.

    • @shornandkenny
      @shornandkenny 3 года назад +1

      @@gulllakeful yes my uncle bob built mine in ths 50s from a popular science or mechanics mag also. Its 10 feet long with a 92 merc 9.9 on it. It literally does 35 mph with a speed prop on it lol. But its really nice, it's got a base clear red paint job and matches the feathercraft it sits ontop of the feathercraft while towing lol. It's a pain to get it in the water but looks great on my garage ceiling. 👌

    • @gulllakeful
      @gulllakeful  3 года назад +1

      @@shornandkenny I remember now, it wasn’t only the motor that was too big, it was the untested pulley system for the steering and the throttle.
      It throttles up well, but didn’t do well on the throttling down. The steering cables were also loose and sticky.
      For anyone who builds a hydroplane, it’s a good idea to test all those connections, blocks and pulleys.
      You might end up going on a John Glenn test flight.
      On a side note, my brother rebuilt an E boat. It now hangs on the ceiling at the Gull Lake Yacht Club.
      A wood hydroplane would make a really good bar. The outboard motor could hold the mini fridge.

    These boats are the ultimate in style and class and sheer dollars. But if you closed your eyes and listened they sounded like Vietnamese river boats. Only one hit the throttle for a microsecond and then it sounded like a race boat. Open it up boys for Gods sake.

    • @gulllakeful
      @gulllakeful  3 года назад +1

      There hasn’t been a sound like that in Vietnam since the Higgins. If one of these were to idle up the Mekong, it would stop everyone in their tracks. It could also spark PTSD for many of the grandparents along the shore. In person they create a sound pressure level that you feel in your gut. It sounds better with stereo speakers, not a laptop.
      I used a good microphone, and spent some time mixing the audio. I'm standing on the shore in a 'no wake zone', the only way to capture all the boats at a boat show. I will ask for a ride this summer. They go fast all the time.
      Now I have a reason... "Let's open this thing up for gods's sake".
      I hope they don't mind me knocking on their doors, with camera equipment, once the ice melts on the lake.

    No wake zones are no wake not necessarily no speed. Ever notice a fast boat on plane and the same boat going slower?

    • @jimmartin7881
      @jimmartin7881 3 года назад +1

      5 MPH/No wake zone anybody that has a boat knows the rule. It's etiquette, boats don't have brakes and nobody appreciates having their hard earned investment banging into the dock because of some idiot that doesn't get the gist of a no wake zone.

    • @gulllakeful
      @gulllakeful  3 года назад +1

      The cops would take your boat away from you, rightfully so. It is fun to watch the bass pros come out of the no wake zone, during a tournament. It's like pit row. Then, yes very cool to watch a boat with a 350 on the back leave no wake, not even a ripple. The antique boats have a fixed propeller and steer with rudders. I believe it was the addition of sponsons on the 'later' boats, that allows them to plane out of the water.
