    I remember seeing these awesome turbine powered hydroplanes with my dad (RIP pops) as a kid in the mid 90's. While we are much more into racing cars I'll never forget the sound & speed of these babies. Was a magnificent sight to behold.

      Remember this one?? "The same can be said of the Miss Bardahl, which won more races (24) in the decade of the sixties than any other team. Between 1957 and 1969, Miss Bardahl accounted for 27 race victories, five Gold Cups, six National Championships, and was the first to average 116 miles per hour in a heat of competition (in 1965)." Seems slow by today's hydroplanes!

      Both the Bud boats from when Bernie died are still racing today. This boat was converted to a standard design because it just didn’t perform as well as expected. It went on to win quite a few races even. Then with the dissolution of the Budweiser team both the boats were bought by Formula Boats, and races for them for a few years. I can’t remember off hand who owns them now but they still show up from time to time.

My friend commented on Bernie's gold watch, Rolex I think and he handed it to us through the fence to look at and try on. Fricken amazing memory. If we had turned and ran he probably would have jumped the fence and kicked our asses.

    I'm 58 yrs old, grew up in Burien, south of Seattle. As a kid I can remember hearing the piston powered boats racing, even that far away from Lake Washington. The back and forth between the Bud and The Pac (Miss Pay-n-Pack) as well as the Atlas Van Lines were epic. The Bud was faster in the corners, but the Pac was faster in the straights... set up classic and exciting racing that tested the skill of both pilots to get the absolute best out of their machines. The racing was exciting, and unfortunately dangerous. Thanks for the memory.

Tell me how ANY of this effects your life, other than to illustrate how easy it is for others to manipulate you. My aunt was Bernie's personal secretary for many years and we were given a full tour of the facilities, at this facility Bernie actually had his office on the second floor of a massive warehouse full of cases of Budweiser beer and other Anheuser-Busch brands if memory serves me well., 1000's of them all in a environmentally controlled warehouse, I've never seen so much beer in all my life, I'll never forget that day. Growing up in Del Mar, California we used to go every year to Mission Bay in San Diego to watch the Thunderbolts race. These boats would pass by us only a few hundred feet away.... awesome power, shook the ground. Before the races during warmup and trial runs we could hear them from my front porch...30 miles to the north.

    I remember as a kid in the 70’s..we lived near a freeway that runs through southern Idaho. There was a Stuckey’s about a mile from our house. All of these boats would be stopping there enroute to the Burley (IDAHO) regatta. They were fascinating pieces of machinery. 🤙

    Different purpose, but it's amazing how small Ken Warby's "Spirit of Australia" was by comparison. Still the fastest boat ever, remarkably a record that's stood for 45 years.

    • @stinkyfungus
      @stinkyfungus Год назад +12

      Spirit of australia was a slightly different animal.
      It was built for straight line speed, and not circuit racing
      And she didn't have a gearbox like the unlimited - the U class uses a T55 Lycoming turboshaft engine out of a chinook helicopter and a gearbox to drive a cavitating surface drive propeller (hence the MASSIVE roostertail)
      Spirt of Aus used the thrust of the westinghouse J34 engine (the same engine used in a pair in the F2H Banshee jet fighter)
      The form factor of the j34 turbojet engine was quite a bit slimmer than the Lycoming T55 turboshaft mill in the Unlimiteds.

    Back in the early 90's I was a speedboat designer. I had drawn up a wing on the front of my tunnel Hull boat and was the 1st to ever come up with this type of design. They neighbor used to come over and see what we were up to, Jeff Knudsen and he stole my idea. I owned Hurricane Performance Boats then, he worked for Jennings Corp then. It was an adjustable wing in between the front picklfork tunnel and I could set the night to fly above the waves and the bow would fly steady at any altitude I wanted. It was originally designed so they would not flip over. I feel pretty ripped off. And it would be cool to get credit were credit is due. I wish Jeffy would have never been let in the door....

    The MISS BUDWISER was one great looking boat, with Chip Hanour in the cockpit. The MISS BUDWISER won many races, and Chip earned himself a pilots license as the boat spent a lot of time leaving the water. The BUDWISER boat hit speeds in excess of 265 mph and better. With the canard wings in the right position, the boat would go airborn and come back down a few seconds later. In 😅 boat race the MISS BUDWISER was one of the fastest.
