So, what does insanity look like on the water.......
Do these boats still race today ?
I was there in July and had a great time seeing the old boats I remember growing up with.
No sear belts, no roll cage, open cockpit in those days. Those guys were nuts.
My Dad worked for Champion in tbose days (I was 3) and he got pit passes for the hydros and had tons of 8mm film (no sound 🤷)
TV!
Back before Bud went geay
0:30 What an awesome start to a race. Muncey nailed that one!!!!!
What’s the point of all this….why not have a world wide competition on under water basket weaving while holding your breath…???
got to love 8mm film!
That's sick, love to see that someday in my life and where is this boat race at.
This was the boat that would later become the Miss Budweiser after Jim Lucero designed "The Winged Wonder"
In the late 70's thru the early 80's the speed far outpaced the safety. It seems foolish now to separate the driver from the boat
My Dad worked for Champion in the 60s so he got pit passes for the hydros on the Detroit River so i got to see those races as a little kid. Pretty cool.
Drove those things in those days in an open cockpit. Those guys were fearless and crazy.
One of those boats is sitting on a trailer in Bradenton Fla off 9th st. Probably see it on goggle earth just follow the road over the green bridge heading south passed pirate stadium
My dad used to take us to watch miss Budweiser and miss kisw at seafare in Seattle when I was a kid in the early 80s. This brings back great memories.
When BUD was a man's beer. Now, it's no to all Budweiser products 🖕
Damn those were the days
The cameraman should be fired. When they took the cover off of the engine, instead of showing a view of the engine, he shows them placing the cover on the ground, and then a picture of the word Budweiser. What a pity.
I used to pass by Bernie Little Distributers every day on my way to school in Lakeland Florida back in the late 70s, and every once in a while, Miss Bud would be sitting outside, amazing! I believe they used to run on Lake Hollingsworth in Lakeland also.
I love the new speed but the sound of the old boats can't be matched.
Very good video. Thank you for sharing.
Leif Borgesen probably never forgot that, that was an absolutely wicked crash.
Now miss Budweiser has a whole new meaning😂
What happened to that 4-seater Miss Bud??? That would be great to have now to be able to take fans for rides to experience what it was like 50 years ago.
A number of unlimited hydroplanes including Miss Budwiser and Miss Atlas Van Lines were built by Les Staudacher in Bay City Michigan. I used to drive by the shop and they would move the boats out into the parking lot. I had a number of chances to walk right up to them. Then I could watch them race on the Detroit River.
Now they have the Dylan Mulvaney canoe. Would no longer touch Budweiser with a 10ft pole
Those uniforms remind me of Kenny Bernstein and Dale Armstrong NHRA Top Fuel Champions. I've always loved Miss Budweiser Racer too.
21:20 This is a dream of mine. I would love to ride shotgun in the old Pay 'n Pak!!!!!
The Pay'n Pak/Atlas Van Lines/Madison boat probably has the most points of any hull in history. She had a long racing life. My favorite boat of all time.
🤔 The owners name should have been 💡 US‼️ 😡
My favorite hydroplane EVER. I love that boat.
He needs a map. How hard is it... drive a mile or so and turn left... drive a mile or so and turn left... Repeat.....
Heat 2A was bittersweet. The Atlas/Pak/Madison is the greatest boat of all time. It was truly an innovation. It did pretty good for a 13 year old boat.
What a final! Mark Tate in his prime!!
I wish I could ride in the old Miss Budweiser with the Griffin power boat. Racing is not the same without Miss Budweiser the Squire Shop and the Alats Van Lines. I was the last person to get Dean Chennworth autograph before he jump into the Miss Budweiser and got killed in Tri City Washington.
Saw them run in Evansville Ind. Unforgettable. Really miss them
Should take a look at this home video from the 1940 Toronto CNE? which was due to be wiped but was uploaded thankfully to YT, at just past the 5 minute mark a couple Hydros whiz buy. Perhaps you guys can figure out which boats they are? 1940 Toronto CNE? ruclips.net/video/AsGJy3z6vfc/видео.html
Pat O'Day's play by play was so much better.
"The sin is not losing. The sin is NOT TRYING. " Words to live by!!!!!
Piso plano !!! No entiendo como se pega al agua en lugar de volar 😮😮
Interestingly the Pay n Pak, owned by Dave Herensberger was racing against the Budweiser, the boat that he sold to Bernie Little at the end of the 1972 season.
back when boats sounded good and deck to deck was normal not rare.
Incredible sound!
Small appendage syndrome
I grew up racing in the 70's and 80's racing APBA. I idolized Bill Muncey. I remember when one of his Boats was on display in my City. I still have an engine from the outboard race of champions that Bill put together at Miami marine stadium. Godspeed Bill!
That's crazy fast
totally forgot about the split canard
what was top speed
