Putin is gambling, and will go right up to the brink with his saber-rattling. He will use nuclear weapons if he can get away with it, say if the US pulls out of NATO. He would even detonate an electromagnetic pulse nuke in space above the US to take out our electrical infrastructure if no lives would be lost (actually there would be, as fly-by-wire airliners fall out of the sky). Putin could nuke European cities and a president Trump will say "not our problem."

Some precious resources start West of Luhansk, Donetsk & North of Zaporizhznia Oblasts. Currently they've only really obtained some of the countries oil and coal which is already common to Russia, but the more precious items are closer to the river. The country has some of the largest deposits in all of Europe.
