Comment on the last time entry about education of children by Ai. Cato the elder, ancient Roman Senator and Consul, argued Roman children should only be educated by their parents to ensure Roman values were clearly passed on to Roman children. We have come a long way since then and today most accept sending children to be educated by strangers that may or may not share the values and culture of the parents. Ai educators will probably not be a concern for most and might be less likely to insert non-shared values and bias into education. Assuming we obtain a majority consensus on the level of bias that Ai will be allowed to present. I expect school boards, state and local level, might try to drive some of that in reference to institutional education. But those boards will probably continue to lose influence over time with the continued proliferation of online education options. And federal or, as this video points out, corporations might become the primary influence with Ai educators. I’ll keep homeschooling though! 😊
"No employees will lose their jobs in the next five years because of AI". He can't possibly honor that commitment and stay in business. The competition will eat him alive because they don't feel the need to keep expensive human bodies on the payroll just to make headlines.
We will boycott companies putting profits before people and we will not sit by and watch the merger of corporate and state power like dumb animals.I will drop out completely and so will many others because we DON'T NEED any of it. We may enjoy it and like some of the changes that have happened, but we are not as stupid as you people think we are....we're compared to cattle, wasn't it? Yeah. Shouldn't have taught the cattle to read huh? ....some of us know what's up. Don't ever forget that.
I work in one of the biggest corporation in the world (food production). Let me tell you, current use of AI is extremly limited, what we know as chat GPT is just a better google... I work in finance as a new projects executor. I really don't see anything usful coming soon... We have to wait for quantum computers to really be able to over work human mind. Meanwhile, big corporations outsource easy task to India etc
He loses me on the climate change. 1600 science experts signed a petition saying the science models used are filled with too many variables. I think as fast as technology is advancing we will be able to have a cleaner environment, but to bankrupt our country to achieve this is ludicrous, look what has happened to Germany it’s citizens we’re having to go to the Forests to gather woid to stay warm and thank God they ended up having a mild winter. What happened to the Ice Age we were supposed to have in the 70’s?? People have such short memories, look it up and to think that we can control all of it is really unrealistic right now. We have one of the cleanest countries but what good we do is offset by countries as China, India, Indonesia, Mexico that don’t adhere to climate change policies. I think we need to use fossil fuels along with green energy until we can convert over. I live in the west and it’s crazy to take a road trip in an electric car, there are so few recharging stations and it takes so long to fully recharge a car tgat it can add one to two hours to a 3-5 hour trip. If we’re to have all electric cars by bidens schedule of 2030 he’s living in lala land, we are no where close without the infrastructure! Where do you think the electricity comes from to charge those cars, gas, diesel, natural gas and coal. And what happens with all the solar panels and wind turbines with them now wearing out. They have a pile Wyoming so big it can be seen from space and how do they break them down since they’re made from fiberglass! With gas chain saws! What will be done with the batteries that have hazardous materials that the cars run on?? I think there a lot of good ideas for cleaner energy but it seems very few people are looking at the long term effects. Al Hore the expert on climate change in 2006 all of our coastal cities would be under water by 2012 or 2015 and I’ve seen zero evidence. Read the Mythology of. Lunate Change, it may give you a little different perspective. Just my opinion.

Wow, the idea that companies won't use AI to reduce staffing immediately is wildly naive! Most large companies today have ongoing staff reduction organizations as deeply embedded as HR and accounting. Virtually every company has a bottom 20% performing employees that they would like to dismiss with cause. Additionally, a lot of companies are chomping at the bit to use AI as a means of aquiring more "obedient workers" from the labor pool. AI may well be one of the best prospective employee screening tools to come along in the last hundred years. Mark me on this!

The "big tech" relies heavily on the fact that its data centers are not being physically assaulted, or aren't they? The few fires in the EU data centers when Russia started the war with Ukraine did raise a few eyebrows. Besides, if a state, any state, decides to nationalize / take control of said data centers the big tech loses its sovereignty overnight. Do you think that in case of a war or some other major emergency the state will not want that control? Last time I checked private armies aren't very welcome within state borders and I doubt any big tech would be able to fend off the state if it really wanted to show who's the boss.
"Instead of regulating AI so only a select few have access to full models, perhaps it would be safer to ensure *everyone* has access, by supporting open-source model development. This could allow more people with a wider variety of expertise to help identify and counter threats." - Jeremy Howard
That would still leave the majority at a vast disadvantage. Those who currently have zero knowledge in this field. There is a bleak chance they can learn fast enough (or at all). The necessary regulation is to rein in egotistical and/or stupid evildoers to exploit ai for their own benefit while not giving a damn about others or not even getting the bigger picture. Basically, ai multiplies the effectiveness of human greed. That is what needs to be regulated.

Ian's last point is very powerful, and I agree, but I am afraid that ship has already sailed. I watch my grandchildren and they have used AI their entire lives!
Thank you for having on this guest. I thought many of this thoughts were devastating accurate, especially pertaining to Big Tech's massive power, and misuse of same. That said, most people don't even realize that the entire purpose of the internet was specifically developed to wage war more effectively, not for sending email or watching porn. Fighting wars require enormous amounts of data gathering, then assessing that data, the ultimately getting it out to the battlefield as fast as possible, which was its initial reason for its creation in the first place. What I'm trying to illuminate here is, if the government was so interested in using this groundbreaking technology *for killing people,* does it require even a TINY bit of imagination to see how it would ultimately be used against law abiding citizens of our own country? You already know the answer to that, proven by both Mark Zuckerberg, Google, and a young man by the name of Edward Snowden. All of our personal data is for sale to the highest bidder, and that is an undeniable fact.
I have been watching AI for over thirty years. From 30 years ago up until now, AI has been only 2-4 years away from widespread use. Maybe this time, it is really 2-4 years away from widespread use. Ian and Tom seem to have a good handle on this topic as it is Today. These assumptions about AI will look very wrong a year from now.
Lawyers and others will convince idiots to give AI separate citizenship and the ability to earn and have actual ways to invest and then they , the AI, will own it all over time.

Another problem, the older generation is so much larger than our younger… and most older people are behind the times and are either unwilling to learn new tech, or do not care to.
Good, less jobless people after wave of automation 😂 Imagine having society with age structure still in rapid growth phase. Each year youd have more young people cause your nation population have not stabilized yet. While each year another 10% of entry level jobs young people would do disappear cause of AI...
So very deflationary! The massive baby boomer retirements with its inherent reduction of spending. The drastic reduction in the birth rate resulting in less spending on baby/toddler needs. AI reducing the number of jobs and therefore less people employed and therefore no spending. Technology/blockchain reducing the cost of web3. Hence, the cost of all hard assets will not appreciate. We are probably close to long term historical highs for the prices of houses, stocks, gold, oil, crypto, etc

AI does not run itself its parameters are programmed and the people financing and programming have a set agenda. It is like saying the "algorithm" this the "algorithm" that, like this set of instructions, norms, etc. were not coming from a company or a given group of developers, like it had its own volition, will and agenda.

Where is "We the People" going? Where is "Capitalism" headed in terms of power? What will the wealthiest individuals, of whom there will be numerous, spend their money on? The path of "We the People" remains unclear as societal shifts and changing dynamics reshape the future. Similarly, the trajectory of Capitalism's power is characterized by a constant evolution, influenced by economic forces and social consciousness. As the number of affluent individuals continues to rise, their priorities and spending patterns will shape various domains. However, it is essential to consider a range of possibilities as we ponder the destinations of both "We the People" and the aspirations of the wealthy elite.
One more thing to increase drastically the gap between those who are familiar and dominate technology and those who are barely able to get money from an ATM with a card, as I see sometimes.
Working class wages are not growing faster and I did not see or experience any single mother bailouts. I’ve had to work more hours the last 2 years than ever in my life just to survive

😮 I see AI as tools to help with work. It's the employers who choose to replace workers with AI technology. Government has to look at how the impact of technology to affect its economy and citizens.
Humans working alongside AI makes sense but the next step will be to cut jobs because AI can now replace the humans. Capitalism is all about profit, efficiency and shareholder value. How does capitalism work if many humans cant work, therefore cant pay to live ? Will there be a dystopian future where we have two groups of humans, the elite AI tribe and the tribe that rejects AI. ? I do worry about the prism getting more narrow, creating infinite groups of people firm fixed on their reality and being closed minded to any other view. This is happening already... through social media, lack of fact checking and questioning everything we we know or THINK we know. I use Bard regularly and have found it to make a lot of mistakes but that's only because I question the answers and ask to cross reference. Most of the people I know take any old answer from Google as gospel, no doubt its that same for Bard and chat GBT. My concern is this is yet another nail in the coffin for "thinking" and evolving as humans. There are so many things I could unpack and talk about from the interview but I appreciate its just my view point and doesn't mean I am right and conscious that I may be a lone voice in the wilderness ! Thank you and keep these coming !
OMG he’s talking that tec corporations should be regulated? By whom? Government? Can anyone tell who’s regulating the US government exactly? Who stands behind all those talking heads? It can only be safe if there is humanity wide consensus for power of this kind or inevitable scrutiny
This time the world won't be the same artificial intelligence automation and advanced technology will take over why should a company pay the employee when it can be done by artificial intelligence automation and advanced technology see many pizza house 🏠 using artificial intelligence robots to make pizza and french fries slowly people will lose job as driver, waiter, chef, physician, lawyer government employees not a single department will be spared
He laments the jobs lost to the internet and technology but counters that with saying - but look at the rise in productivity, progress and profit. That’s just business at usual. Forget the poor dispensable worker as long as the overlords make money. I know I sound. Cynical but what is so exciting about progress that keeps funneling the money to the top and not retraining or taking care of those who just want a job that gives them a decent middle class life. What is lost in the capitalist dogma is that not everyone wants to compete to the top. Maybe they like gardening or painting. They should be entitled to a job that meets their needs without having to consume the entrepreneurial anxiety of “progress”. Must everyone be on the treadmill. I say this as someone who themselves loves the treadmill of achievement but I also recognize that that is not for everyone. As we run Pell mell into the future we should also be talking about new inventive ideas on how to keep people in the workforce at decent jobs. Perhaps when government gives out its corporate welfare there should be a caveat that workers be taken care, not just the shareholders this time.
What do you see the little people doing? Any way to prepare or tell our children and grandchildren to think about/plan/do now? Will there be schools, sports, stores, food, banks, homes? Who will do the bailing? Who or what chooses who will be helped? Will there be public travel? You said major changes in two years. What do you think about next five years? Do we just wait and see or is there anything we can do to plan?
He talks🎉 only if the companies that they do those things transparently, how about those who do things invisibly. Where we should start first talking on the visible or invisible?
The MASSIVE difference between this and the finance sector with the trading algos is those can actually can ALWAYS be rewritten with rules you want. We're rapidly going to lose that opportunity with many or all AI architectures- and oncoming new ones yet to be developed probably will have NO capacity to comprehend, let alone control.
Thank to you both for an interesting web conversation. First of all I'm 77 years old and live in Australia so I've been around the block a few times and seen and experienced a lot. Now as human beings it doesn't realy matter which side of the fence you come from or what colour you are because we all live on this planet for X amount of time. Sorry but I must say I haven't seen a country more divided than USA is in recent times ( no offence meant ) but I think you touched on that between the lines. AI as you said could or would be a major concern for us all so what going through my mind is why can't we build in a safety net ( by law ) when further developing this tool. My greatest concerns are that this tool will, in time, be used by countries and or individuals for whatever purpose they want or are after and also if AI becomes self generating. Maybe some digital signature for every AI developed could be stored somewhere so we know that it has be been authorised for safe use. We are humans need oxygen, food and water to survive where AI just need power ( Electricity ) to function so maybe there lies the key should it run out of control. My other big concern is mother nature which is bound to deliver several big " blows " well before 2045 so I can only hope Governments are well prepared for this as well. Stay safe everyone!
I hope people stop saying "stay safe" That'd be great. It implies there's heavy danger right there all the time. Imagine being a kid and still hearing that dumb covid salutation. Just putting it out there. 62 in 🇨🇦..

At 30:00 (THIS) ..Bremmer talks about getting feed/data from all different topics/streams/types of people/programs. Before there was Google, I was doing this at age 15 as a journalist through libraries and travel, and other journalists. And the advice I now give most to people who ask my opinion is to watch Associated Press, NPR, Deutsche Welle, BBC, Al Jazeera, and NBC/CNN whatever, not one of them, but all of them at the headline level for a month. It becomes very clear after that time what is propaganda and what is fact-based/neutrality with the least bias, and shows Americans what the rest of the world is thinking and what they see (which is quite frankly equal parts hysterical and terrifying).
No, the most dangerous thing about AI is the intensive to use it in a capitalist model. The thought of either of you deciding what is good for everyone should you come upon amazing opportunities is the scariest thing of all.

Well said.
Meanwhile, big corporations outsource easy task to India etc
with AGI, it is possible but with AI nope
I’m an employer. I don’t think I’ll be laying people off (yet) but I’m definitely looking at ways AI can do future roles rather than employing humans.
If cryptocurrencies are not a threat to governments, why are they fighting so hard against them?
The guest's emphatic and broad statements "we ALL agree..." on several big topics as a basis for his next statements is very polarizing. That level of polarization leads me to distrust his clarity on anything he says after those statements. Although, I am doing my best to remain open as I find this discussion interesting and relevant. Mr Bremmer had me up to the 1hr mark, when he said: "We are doing [AI algorithm] experiments in real time on human beings... we wouldn't do that with a vaccine, even in an emergency, or on a new GMO food, because we would be concerned about new cancers, disease, you name it..." Hey, I loooooove your interviews; I keep coming back to them. When listening we are so absorbed and the frequent use of the F-word is still considered unprofessional and offensive in so many parts of the world. We're used to hearing it in movies and entertainment, but this is a classroom and we come here to feed. It jerks us off when our concentration is so high on the content. Please consider toning down on expletives; we would really appreciate it. A very humble request.
I won't lose my job to AI because "my boss likes having me around"

Yup. The real joke is you're about to see how enslaved we really are. These gents just talk to get some money before the ship sinks. Human nature of panic, and control.

I’ve been following Ian for many years and read a couple of his books.
He can sometimes be a little bit of an alarmist.
1:07 and that’s great! 🎉 politicians and government should not have monopoly of power to control and restrict everything, in some areas people can have their communities where other freedom to decide applies.
You weren't thinking that corporations were running things 5 years ago? Where have you been? Everyone and their mom has known that for a while. What are they teaching political scientists these days.
Is it not the programmer that sets the boundaries/parameters and what the AI learns? And have similar "traits or personality" of the programmer?
"Instead of regulating AI so only a select few have access to full models, perhaps it would be safer to ensure *everyone* has access, by supporting open-source model development. This could allow more people with a wider variety of expertise to help identify and counter threats."
- Jeremy Howard
That would still leave the majority at a vast disadvantage. Those who currently have zero knowledge in this field. There is a bleak chance they can learn fast enough (or at all). The necessary regulation is to rein in egotistical and/or stupid evildoers to exploit ai for their own benefit while not giving a damn about others or not even getting the bigger picture. Basically, ai multiplies the effectiveness of human greed. That is what needs to be regulated.
I actually feel so much better about a whole lot after listening to this conversation. If heads like yours can prevail, maybe there is a way through all of this, that won't become a complete disaster. I'm not at all confident that the human family is ready for what is coming, given that we appear to be growing more and more self absorbed with more and more technology. It's good to hear a way forward, now if only enough people can be convinced.....

Im glad I'm a plumber. I think my job is safe for a while haha.
But the people that normally hire you might not have jobs, so they won't be able to pay you. S#!t rolls down hill, remember? LOL
Once people can't afford your hourly rate, they will turn to an app. That shows them how to fix the problem, Unless it's rodding the drain, NOBODY wants to do that nasty job.
Until they perfect the robot. Already cameras can operate themselves. Strap a camera onto a small robot and you have a visual. Robot to snake a drain and weld. I think you will be babysitting robo plumber here soon instead of hiring help.
@susanlippy1009 Yeah, that's true in some ways, but there is certainly more to plumbing than that. A human touch will be needed for a long time
@@tomp6685 i think we will see more small plumbing services. A plumber and a lot of autonomous tools run by them. One guy being able to operate many machines were once having a second set of hands was needed. That individual will need to be good at talking to the customer, it will be the one thing machines won't be able to do very well. So yeah you will still be needed to connect with clients. So very deflationary!
The massive baby boomer retirements with its inherent reduction of spending.
The drastic reduction in the birth rate resulting in less spending on baby/toddler needs.
AI reducing the number of jobs and therefore less people employed and therefore no spending.

I have to grin at way these gentlemen think through the sciences.
HUMANITY will retire to AI.
in 1991, my mortgage company had 32 women using typewriters. By 2001, I only needed only 5 women using computers to do the same work.
Great discussion.
Love this episode, thank you Tom!!
I hope people stop saying
"stay safe" That'd be great.
It implies there's heavy danger right there all the time. Imagine being a kid and still hearing that dumb covid salutation. Just putting it out there.

The combination and combining of Quantum computing and AI will be the beginning of the singularity. No matter what any of these so called half glass full experts tell you, We are screwed. This will be used against us not for us. These are truly end times. I to am from Australia and 3 to 5 years from now are going to be truly terrifying. It’s going to get real bad very quickly
Long waited🙏
Mark of the beast. You can not buy, sell or trade without taking the mark.
If our hope lies with big tech and government getting together “formally” we are so fucked!
Yes, that sounds like a disaster!
Please avoid the F bomb. It’s offensive 😢
No, the most dangerous thing about AI is the intensive to use it in a capitalist model. The thought of either of you deciding what is good for everyone should you come upon amazing opportunities is the scariest thing of all.
On my Newsletter A.I. Supremacy I wrote about technological loneliness last week, and weirdly covered a lot of these same topics.
“We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.” - Maya Angelou.
You might have a tiny, wobbly step to celebrate. If so, bravo! You might have already integrated a change. If so, bravo! Even when you’ve ignored things for a little while, notice that right now, you are here.
Give yourself credit. Delight in the beauty of the butterfly and don’t forget to stop to appreciate the changes it has gone through to get there.
❤Beautiful 😊I needed to read this 😊progress not perfection ❤
When he starts talking about climate change he loses me… “we all know…” or “we all agree…”
Yeah… the climate changes. Yes, humans pollute the planet. But please stop with the corporate establishment narrative that we’re changing the climate. The sun does that… the volcanoes do that… please just stop.
