Yes in 2014. Actually even earlier, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, when Russia was PROMISED by the US that the Nato would not move one centimetre closer to Russia. And then the Americans decided that as the Unipolar power they wanted rid of Russia and access to all her raw materials. And then the US used the EU to try to separate Ukraine from Russia's sphere of influence.
Imagine the attitude if Russia had done in Mexico what the US has done in Ukraine. America would be outraged and sabre rattling. But because it's the US doing it, it's all about muh' Democracy...not US Imperialism in any way.

We think that it is a shame that the Russian government feels it is ok in the 21st century to invade its neighbours and start war, a war that it WILL lose and already is, one that will destroy its already failing economy and sink a great country back many decades in its developments whilst also sacrificing hundreds of thousands of its men for your leaders own ambitions and sending all of its intelligent young people fleeing to other countries to escape conscription. I said from the start Russia can only win if the West allows them to win. It is not within their power to do anything but try to keep fighting and hope for a change in their favor so they can win. They can't actually create the conditions for victory. The annoying part is neither can the West, because support is only reactive and there is no long term strategy. The West CAN create the materiel terms for victory, but not the political ones. We're hanging around waiting for a black swan event in Russia or hoping the whole thing eventually sorts itself out. It's rather dangerous to have no vision in this way, for everyone.

It's fairly obvious that the west can give Ukraine the means to throw Russia out. Pretty likely the reason we choose not to go ahead with that is that western leadership has intel suggesting it's too risky to face the Russian or Chinese responses. It might not be nuclear war, it might be something as mundane as Russian sabotage of e.g. all subsea infrastructure, disruption of trade routes, or it could be that China would step in with lethal aid.

THE next flash point that NATO and America need to watch is CHINA and the PHILIPPINES. There is a lot of bullying going on by Chinese PLA Coastguard ships in the South China Sea. I think that the US needs to keep at least two Aegis Class Destroyers working together with their Filipino Navy partners such as they are to protect those reefs and coastal and regional waters. Those marine territories are much closer to the Philippines than to CHINA.
I also want to see a lot of coordination between US and Taiwanese and Filipino assets in that Strait between the south of Taiwan and the northern Islands of the Philippines. That's the next area to keep control of.

"As a result of Soviet Union's collapse it's 15 former republic became the newly independent states, Ukraine among them......, having strong industrial and agricultural sectors, a favorable climate and fertile land,
Ukraine had great potential to become one of the most prosperous European countries. That is, if its leadership had chosen a political course that took into account the country’s centuries-old economic, family, cultural and religious ties with Russia.
Effective anti-corruption reforms, a certain level of autonomy for the regions with large Russian ethnic population, two state languages and neutral status with no membership in any military blocs would have made Ukraine if not a new Switzerland then definitely a happy and prosperous state. There would be no civil war and Donbass and Crimea would still be a part of Ukraine."
