"The Russians need to understand they have lost the war."
This is the one main point I would disagree with Anne Applebaum, and others, on: the Russians do NOT think they have lost the war, especially since they are still gaining ground in Ukraine. And forget about pointing out how many men they are losing every day in Ukraine. The last war where body counts were used as an indicator of who was "winning" (Vietnam) showed just how bogus that metric is. Far more important is the will to fight -- and so far, in spite of every negative indicator that has been latched on to by Western media and commentators -- Russia shows no sign of lacking the will to fight on. THEY believe they are winning -- and that is incentive enough for them to continue, especially if they believe they are defeating not just Ukraine, but NATO, and the "decadent" West.
