What's happening in Syria is historic. Syria was a Russian close asset since the cold war Soviet times. It became even more important in recent years when Iran joined the BRICS alliance. With Iran help Russia had open passage through Caspian sea into Iran, Iraq and then into Syria basically into Mediterranean basin and further into Africa. Now this open corridor is blocked and there's no safety for Russian military bases in Tartus and Letakia.
Depending on how things go with the new Syrian government Russia may very well lose not only access to the Mediterranean, but also their easy access to support their forces in Africa Iran will find it much more difficult to support its proxy's Hamas and Hezbollah against Israel It may also affect their ability to support the Houthi as well If Syria doesn't go full terrorist state it may actually create an avenue for peace in the Middle East with a reduction in the influence of Russia and Iran in the region
@AS-np3yqthat would be good.. The one of the major reason why Russia was involved in the Syrian war because they didn’t want the gas pipeline from Qatar to pass through Syria and into the European countries.

That's why he loves dictators: they're "Strong Men" and Trump gains Street Credit based on association with them. But the collapse of Syria makes Putin look weak. Meanwhile, it wasn't lost on Trump that Zelensky got an extended standing ovation at the unveiling of the rebuilt Notre Dam. Trump may decide that hanging out with Zelensky may make Trump look better ...
I'm glad for the comment about Russia losing a warm water port. Ukraine controls access to a deep, ice free port for the Russian Fleet. Besides all the other benefits of controlling Ukraine, that is the main reason.
Im totally unconvinced that new clothes and better equipment from Turkey, arming Muslim Brotherhood militias, represents a real change. They're taking you for a ride.
Doesn’t Russia have more energy, resources and time to put into Ukraine now, seems not good for Ukraine. Finding out Ukraine was sending weapons to ISIS before Russias invasion made me look at this differently. The poor Syrians will now get wiped out by Israel. Five countries are bombing Syria today doesn’t seem great for them either.
Unfortunately, it also brings Bashir and Asma Assad to Russia as Putin's guest at at time when sanctions have begun to bite and Putin is in increasingly desperate need of funds. Asma has used her expertise and connections to grow the Assad fortune to well over $135 billion. Much of this money will be pressed into Putin's service allowing him to prolong the war.

No. Why not? Afghanistan was a burden with negligible benefit and great cost. No one needs Afghanistan except Afghans. It was a false target for the USA. Syria used to be a huge asset for Putin and the USSR before him. The way we pulled out lacked grace but should have been done sooner. Excellent as always
