Great Review. This was my first Fantasy novel I read after having stopped reading for years.

I read this whole series in January and put up a series review on my channel. I enjoyed City of Stairs but really loved books 2 and 3. I found the writing quite clunky at the beginning of book 1 but it really improves as the series continues.

I liked City of Stairs quite a bit. Sigrid is hilarious and a savage lol. I didn’t like book 2 to be honest, but I loved book 3. Book 3 was so action packed and it was clever how everything came together in the end. Also gave me the feels.

It was a favorite read for me last year. I read the second book too, and I think both build to action-packed climaxes, but you have to go along with the slower build-up. The world-building is worth the patience. I prefer this to a book that starts strong but I lose interest in two-thirds of the way through.

I just finished it yesterday. I’d say I agree with you mostly in regards to the portrayal of Vo’s sexuality, something always felt wrong in the way it was written and I couldn’t quite put my finger on it, but you said it well. The only thing is, I really enjoyed his speech towards the end (not trying to spoil anything) about it, I think the author was trying to make a critique of biphobia with the totality of the story, I just don’t think it landed too well in most instances in the book.
I have it a 4 star review, though, and would rate it a 7.5-8/10 overall. It’s pretty good but I don’t know if I want to continue with the series tbh.

My boyfriend and I are doing a mini monthly bookclub together where we are going to read a book together every month and this is on our list. I am excited for it because of the industrial urban fantasy setting, it sounds like something he would like a lot too, so hopefully we enjoy!!!(:

huh, so is it like steampunk-y? i was looking for some kind of book in that vein
[although the bi-phobic lng is a big yikes, so idk]

I liked so much about this book, but the plot was a bit meh and the rampant biphobia (which seemed to be the author's, not a reflection of the world) really makes me doubt if I want to pick up another one in the series.
