  • City of Stairs is the best fantasy/spy thriller about diplomat with a pirate secretary I've read all month!

I loved City of Stairs. I felt that the characters were the weakest part as I didn't feel a connection to them until well into the novel. That said the worldbuilding was amazing. At times I just wanted the story to come to a screeching halt so I could learn more about the world. Such good worldbuilding.

I agree about the world building. I didn't have a problem with the characters, but I can see where you're coming from on that one. Very interesting world!

This is a book that I think opposite of almost everyone on booktube. I just really disliked the ending, with a passion. It's a shame because I was enjoying the book until then, but I'm the type of reader, if the ending just doesn't work for me, than the entire book just doesn't do anything for me.
However, this book did something very important for me. I read this right when I joined booktube. It extremely humbled me and taught me about personal preference on a scale I never would have thought and to have that right when I started doing reviews, was very important. I just assumed everyone would agree with me about the ending but very little did. That was important in and of itself.

Very interesting! I agree that a bad ending can spoil an otherwise great book. I had a similar learning experience with personal taste on Booktube. It took me way too long to figure out people can and should disagree on books without one of them being 'wrong'.

I didn't like the ending either.
