I'm so glad you posted this. I've been wanting some nonfiction about comics recs.
Stories from the Shelf I'm glad it was helpful! :)
Great post (although you called every one of your own selections "weird"!) - it brought back memories of the days when there were almost no books about comics. I agree with you that "Understanding Comics" is hands-down the best such book, but I just have to mention my two favorites: Dick Lupoff's "All in Color for a Dime" and of course Stan Lee's "Origins of Marvel Comics"! Lee has a memoir coming out in a few months (co-written with Peter David) - I wonder how it'll be.
Steve Donoghue Thanks for the recommendations! I haven't heard of the Lupoff book. I'll check it out.
Thank you for this! I recently just picked up Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud. That publisher sounds really interesting, I'll put them on my radar.
Thanks! I can't wait to hear what you think of Understanding Comics.
I needed this! I'm currently writing a paper about comics, so this was helpful. And also, Understanding Comics, what a classic :D
BlabberOn Oh cool. Good luck on your paper!
I recently read Jill Lepore's 'The Secret History of Wonder Woman'. Which was certainly an interesting read!!! Have you seen this one?
yesmissjane I've seen that one and wondered about it (no pun intended). I will check it out. Thanks for the recommendation. :)
It is probably as much about the more general history of the period, and about the family of the guy who created the character, but there is also quite a lot about the business of the early days of Wonder Woman.
