I havent read this and you have similar taste as me so I dont know if I will, but you make a good point. Too many booktubers put up the same Gwynne, Abercrombie, Sanderson, Rothfus, Martin, and Hobb in their list in different order. I like those authors but there are more authors out there that have good to great books.
Yeah 100%. I try to branch out when I can!
I've had this book on my TBR for about 2 years I'd still like to read it someday. Thanks for your review - I am glad that you can say what you did and didn't like rather than just saying it was a bad book since taste is subjective.
Thanks Jennifer!
Happy reading to you!!🎉
Thanks Safina!
I respect your honesty. I loved this whole series but I understand it’s not for everyone. The characters may not appeal to everyone. I kept hearing how great Jade City is, but couldn’t get into it. Mainly because JC had too many characters and doesn’t feel like it has a main protagonist. I gave up but I plan to give JC another try.
He’s on my list of authors to try. Shame this didn’t work for you
Hopefully you dig it!
This series has been on my TBR for some time but I have been kicking it down the road because of mixed reviews. I guess I’ll get to it sometime
Yeah give it a shot and see if it's for you!
Same here😅 I, also didn't have such a good time with it.
Good to know am not alone out there. Good luck with your next read.
Thank you!
As a fellow father of 2 who enjoys spending time with family, reading and playing video games
(in that order), I need advice on how you find the time to read so much as well as do your discord and youtube content! I would love to spend more time reading but I am always so exhausted!
For starters I only sleep for about 5 hours each night. I've just always been that way.
So because of that, I wake up an hour before everyone and read for an hour. Then before bed when my kids are watching TV, I read. And then after they go to bed I read for another hour. I also listen to audiobooks while driving or doing chores.
After I'm done reading at night, I play video games for a little while.
On days I am shooting RUclips videos, I just play less video games. And I don't spend very long shooting my videos (I also do it in one take), and my editing is very minimal so that doesn't take long.
@@MattsFantasyBookReviews Thanks for taking the time to reply. I hope when my kids get a bit older I will be able to get back into it properly. Currently on Book 11 of the Realm of the Elderlings and have decided that Malazan will be my next series after watching your RUclips channel. Will be at least a few months before I get through the remaining Robin Hobb books though!
@@TeamNorb2020 I hope you enjoy, both of those are wonderful series!
I enjoyed this book but it took me a minute to get into. I found the start actualy confusing because the characters aren't destinct. I dont find the book to be weird at all though. I read Foundryside first and I loved that series, it has much more devloped and unique characters.
Oof, sorry to hear that you didn't like this -- doesn't sound like it'd be my cup of tea either, given your feedback
It's all good, hope the next one is better!
Thank you! I had this on my TBR for quite while and read in February...and I really didn't like it and I thought I'm the only one.
There are dozens of us!
I’m just like you in that I prefer going into a book blind but it’s so hard when you’re involved in the community and sometimes it does come back to bite you when you didn’t do the proper research and realize the book is nothing like you thought it would be
Yeah, you have to take the L's with the W's sometimes!
Sorry to hear you didn't like this. I do agree with those other people that books 2 and 3 are much better on the character development front, the first book drew me in with the worldbuilding and writing, and 2 and 3 probably brought it into my top 10 (though I admittedly haven't read a lot of the big series that usually get into people's top 10 so...). Though it's perfectly understandable if you didn't like the first book to not continue with the series.
Glad you really liked it!
I hate this book, but not because I read it haha 😂 but because it cost me the TBR contest championship haha 😂
Lol that's hilarious.
This was definitely my least favorite RJB book. I absolutely loved some of his stand-alones like The Troupe and American Elsewhere, but yeah, I was disappointed in this one though I think I rated it a bit higher. He's still one of my favorites so I hope you give him another try some day! Great review as usual
Yeah I want to read Foundryside, so I'll definitely give me another shot!
Oh wow, I’m a character reader mostly. This worries me lol.
Yeah, it should then!
One of my absolute favorites and an excellent author. Shame you didn’t appreciate it.
Glad you loved it!
I read it and liked it though. But good review anyway. 😂
Personally I liked book 2 even less. The third book was by far the best. But I struggled to get through book 2. Cheers.
Yikes. Good to know I'm not missing much!
Really? I liked it a lot.
Yeah just wasn't for me!
Oof this one hurts.
I’m really dissapointed because it was one of my favorite series, sorry
So glad you liked it!
RJB is not for me. The Founders Trilogy almost drove me insane. I had to DNF the third book.
Really gonna miss out on books 2 and 3, book one wasnt great, it was closer to a 3 than a 5, but yeah. I think youre making a mistake
Hrm....okay I might consider it!
I actually listen to this on audiobook not too long ago I had the force my way through it because I like the world but I won't read the other books I didn't like the other book by this author that I read either called foundryside I think I just don't like your style like you kept saying it's just not for me
Yeah some authors just don't click for some people!
I don’t have a problem with your review, HOWEVER I do have a problem with that 49ers shirt!!! That’s got to go!!! 👎🏼
LOL! Who do you root for?
@@MattsFantasyBookReviews Dallas Cowboys!!!
Too bad, I thought it was good
Glad you liked it!
So glad someone found this trash of a book as bad as i did, it was so overhyped everywhere and when i read this , besides some interesting worldbuilding book didn't had any good qualities, bland characters, tons of unecessary dialogues , slow sloggish pace and uninteresting story. One of the worst books i've ever read.
the second book has a plot twist that anyone with eyeballs sees coming in the first 10-15% of the book. so i'm not sure how anyone says the second book is better than the first.
That's really unfortunate!
@Matt's Fantasy Book Reviews its the main plot point too.
