Once a 32gb console comes out yeah.
Until then 12gb is enough since that's the vram usage target for console's 16gb unified memory, and those assets are basically straight-up ported over to PC. Very few titles will bother enhancing assets above and beyond that for PC.

By that time, these cards will probably not be strong enough to drive desirable frame rates. I mean, look at the 1% lows, the 4070 is often beating the 7800XT despite the hampered Memory Bus..which matters more than people give credit for.
Textures on high instead of Ultra at 1440p is not as big of a deal as stability, emulation performance, and features.
Then again, this is assuming prices are similair.

The power consumption difference is going to make the 4070 free if you game for 10 hours a day. Within the period of 3 years you save 1 Megawatt of electricity , in my opinion, this beats the difference from vram if you live in an area with expensive electricity.

In my county price is 0,15€ per KWh. So you would save 0,15€ per day. If you playd 10hours a day (wich almost nobody does) you would save 51,1euros a year. Three years would be 153€. IMO, AMD has come a long way regarding driver stability and performance bang for buck. Nvidia has become overpriced and are using their reputation and fanbase over the years to justify their prices. Plus, their higher end RTX 'BBQ' 12VHPWR connectors skewed me away. Speaking of the used market, I wanted to buy a used RTX 3080ti from FB marketplace however some are asking ~$1K for it. Rather then getting the run around from FB, delays in response ...etc, people are still cocky in relation to their prices and its saleability, so I jumped on the RX7800XT new for cheaper with full 3 years warranty. It's NV counterpart didn't even sniff any of that. There have been multiple other cards where this happened with AMD. Also, if you plan to keep it for 4 years or more, the price difference is negligable for cards in the same price range.

Clearly the big difference in the vram capacity has something to do with that, as people are afraid that 10GB will seriously limit the 3080. The 4070 ti is another Nvidia card with a very low vram capacity for its price tier, and the same thing could easily happen again with the 4070 ti vs AMD's closest competitor, the 7900 XT.

I recently upgraded my system from Ryzen 5 2600 + Asus ROG GTX1070 to an Intel 13600KF + Sapphire Nitro+ 7800xt. To those who are into "content creation" such as streaming. Your best bet would be to go with the RTX4070. Sure its just 12GB but what most content creators and tech youtubers have not said is that the encoding across all platforms is just better when it comes down to AV1 vs H264 and NVENC.
The NVENC encoder is at the current time superior over the rest of the encoders as it is widely supported by different platforms such as twitch, youtube, FB etc. It will not require you to have super high bitrate just to stream a really crisp image to your viewers.
AV1 is supported by both cards however the platforms that support it is at the current time is just RUclips. If you stream on Twitch, the AV1 encoding is not available yet. That said, you will be stuck with H264 which is suffering from pixelation when you do rapid/sudden movements or anything that requires fast/quick movements. Nvidia's NVENC encoder does not suffer from this.
16GB is nice if you are just aiming to game but if you ever want to do productivity, NVIDIA cards such as the 4070 is a much better card for your needs.
12GB of ram is more than enough even for fortnite lumen high.
If in the near future platforms such as twitch would start supporting AV1 then you can go with the 7800xt but at the moment, 7800xt is just good if you want MORE VRAM for your games. Don't rely on the amd cards for productivity. You will just be as disappointed as I am.

With the drivers from the last 2 week the computer has been running perfectly.
Many pointed out that it waa drivers fault that provoked the gpu doing power spikes whwn playing games.

Sorry, Bryan - one correction: percentile frametime values are NOT fps values and SHOULD NOT be converted into fps numbers. Many outlets make this mistake but it's like quoting an acceleration value and turning it into a velocity value....
Other than that - excellent review! I've also looked at 7800XT vs 4070 (I have the "reference" models of each) and the 4070 is an amazing card for SFF and power efficient builds. The 7800XT is, overall, the higher performing card if you discount RT but even then it can be pretty close depending on what settings you play at.
My leaning is more towards the 4070 because it's available in very small sized two-fan configs, whereas the 7800XT's smallest design I've found is the Sapphire Pulse, which /just about/ fits inside my SFF case. On the other hand, the Geforce cards in those small designs are all very cheap feeling, which I'm not a fan of...

    • @Eternalduoae
      @Eternalduoae 7 месяцев назад

@@syncmonism Technically, you're correct. However, the AMD reference design basically doesn't exist (and certainly not available in my region). The Pulse 7700 XT and 7800 XT are essentially the reference design with a slightly longer PCB (which is mostly just empty space) and a few extra resistors/capacitors in optional spots and a HDMI port swapped in for a DP port. The difference in size is minimal, too.
So, for me, the Pulse is the defacto reference design since there's no OC and no special board alterations. It's also the cheapest and smallest design you can buy from any partner. The rest are all three fan configs which are too long to get into my SFF case.

They're both very good products, they just have a lot of different strengths and weaknesses, but they're both very well rounded and good value products.
That being said, pricing can vary a lot by region, and some specific models are going to be better than others. Personally I'm not a big fan of Zotac, Gigabyte, or Asrock, especially their lower-end models, and lower-end Asus and MSI models often aren't great either. Sapphire and EVGA are my favorite brands for having good quality even with basic models, often offering the best bang per buck, imo. Powercolor also makes a lot of good bang per buck models now as well, though I think some of their most basic models might still not be great. Unfortunately, EVGA isn't making graphics cards anymore, so you won't find any EVGA 4000 series cards (unless it's an extremely rare pre-production model).
Ideally, you can find some good, detailed, 3rd party reviews of your exact model before buying. At least with this price tier, even the cheapest quality models tend to be of a higher quality than the cheapest quality models of some lower-end products. With the 6700 XT, the only good cheap model I have seen is the Sapphire Pulse. I would avoid any of the other cheap models for that card. The build quality of the 7800 XTs is, overall, definitely a step-up over the typical build quality of the 6700 XT (especially for the most basic models coming from Asrock, MSI, or Asus).

with the 4070 you get about the same performance in raster with 100w less power draw, significantly better raytracing performance, dlss & framegen (for games such as cyberpunk), video super resolution (which is great for low bitrate/resolution web videos), cuda support, better video codecs (especially h264) and better application performance especially for 3d and cad.
i like the amd driver interface better, the need to use afterburner for a simple undervolt is very convoluted. but that doesnt really outweight the pros of the 4070 over the 7800XT.
the 7800XT should be a constant $100 below the 4070 to be a strong value competitor. at the same price, its just not worth it - give or take that 4gb (or rather 2gb) gap of vram. UNLESS you play call of duty, the extra performance of rdna2 and rdna3 is quite substantial here.

The vram isn't a big issue at all. The 4070 beats the 7800xt in 1% lows. AMDs 80 class can't beat Nvidia's 80 class. You AMD fanboys don't even watch these videos anymore, you just type these essays to reassure your own egos. Pathetic.

I considered these cards in the future. I mostly game but also do SOME content creation. I have an RTX 4060Ti w/ 8G VRAM. I like DLSS frame generation when its supported and power consumption is kind of important to me. But I really wanted the 16G VRAM. Im not a big fan of Nvidia GeForce Experience for recording gameplay. But AMD STILL doesn't support frame generation.
I considered the 7600 XT but it performs slightly worse natively and has no real frame gen.
Admittedly I turn ray tracing off in most games.
I play at 1080P with an AMD Ryzen 5 5600X CPU.
    What is the better buy?

Vram does matter to an extent, but at 1440p, 12GB should be enough until the next generation of console titles start to release.

I have a RX7900XT that replaced my RTX 3070 to which I think the RTX 3070 did better with the games I play. Best thing is upgrade your monitor before you upgrade your GPU. Due to if you cap yourself with a 60FPS with a 60 -75 HZ monitor and you will never get 4K on a 1440P monitor. That cuts down most of your need for a higher video card. I got a better monitor but have not been moved to install it. I will due to I paid for it. May be then I will see a upgrade other than the AMD software is better than the NVIDIA.

You people don't understand how expensive electricity is in some areas, at least for me in Denmark the difference between 4070 and 7800xt is 150€ per year in electricity consumption. 100w difference with similar performance is huge....during the 3 years period that I keep a card, the difference in consumption makes the card free.
