A few years ago, me and my best friend at uni visited Lisbon for the first time and we fell in LOVE with the city!! We promised ourselves that one day we'd spend more time there and I realised... why not now? I have a remote job, I'm still figuring out my life, but why can't I do that from Lisbon? So I found a cute sublet and I'll be there until the end of the year 🌻

It's a bittersweet feeling knowing you'll move here. Obviously I hope you have the best time ever, but it's so sad that us portuguese can barely afford to survive and save up for anything fun in life and at the same time it's such a good destination for outsiders because we make so little money :')

It’s good that you mention the housing crisis here. I’m English too and very aware of how destructive my presence could/can be. All I can say is try and learn the language, culture and make some Portuguese friends. Portuguese people as you say are so open and friendly. I hope you fit right in!
People can’t find anywhere reasonable to live in many parts of the UK too?
I'm in Barcelona and I'm totally with you on the feeling aware of how I might be perceived by local people. Learning the language, immersing yourself in the culture, join courses, go to meet-ups... I also try to make sure I spend money and support only locally owned businesses.
Whatever? Every citizen of Portugal is free to move anywhere else in the EU. There are no good countries in the world and absolutely no one has a right to live somewhere anymore than others do.
I've just graduated from High School and am doing a gap year for now before I start uni. I just wanted to say that your videos and posts always inspire me and also help me so much as you currently go through experiences similar to mine to which I can relate, which helps a lot, especially when I'm in phases where I doubt myself and my choices.
So yeah, I guess what I want to say is a huge thank you for letting us be part of your journey in life!☺️💌

Hi Jade! I know I'm a stranger on the internet, but I've been watching you pretty regularly for a couple of years. You've definitely been a source of inspiration for me in my journey of introspective and self-defining work. I also have a professional mentor who has a daughter applying to college, and she got really excited about Minerva when I told her about it. :)
I have a question that I hope I can ask in the spirit in which I intend it, which is one of friendly curiosity. You mentioned your discomfort with contributing to Lisbon's housing crisis, and I think that's kind of microcosmic of the bigger picture of financially well off 20-something's using travel and short-term living arrangements in major cities as a way to self-actualize. So while you as one single person probably don't have much of an impact on Lisbon's housing market, the fact that a lot of people are doing is does impact these housing markets.
So to finally get to my question: Have you looked into any ways that people who want to have the live-in-another-city-for-a-season experience can do so while being intentional about the ethical implications? I'll admit I've never had that experience, so I have no idea what that might look like.
Again, no judgement or hostility from me about this. I wouldn't ask if I didn't think you were a super thoughtful person. :)

This is something I'm trying to figure out as someone who loves travel, learning about new cultures and the subsequent self-growth, but also cares about the world and social impact. I appreciate you recognising the emerging trend amongst Gen Z/millennials tending towards slow travel and remote work, and the issues this can cause when adopted on a mass scale.
Having navigated slow travel for a few years, suggestions often made by locals include making an effort to learn the local language, support local spaces (restaurants, supermarkets etc), engage with local culture, learn about local history + politics and volunteer locally. Does this solve potential housing crises? Not really. Does volunteering ensure you will make a positive difference? Not necessarily, as 'volontourism' and short-term projects sometimes have a negative impact too. Does learning about the local culture lead to cultural appropriation, or emphasising your role as an outsider in making culture performative and observable? Potentially.
Lol so many questions, to which I do not have the answers. Some may also say that gentrification and increasing internationalism is inevitable as cities grow and that it is the sole role of the government to support locals (e.g rent freezes) and decide the rate at which local landscapes change.
I think it's especially hard for young people who are sold this lifestyle as the dream on social media, so will seize any opportunity to fulfil it without stopping to consider ethical implications. And to what extent is it their job to, if they have worked hard to achieve a lifestyle that no regulations stop them from living?
I have no real answers, but many many Qs that I continually explore. I am an imperfect gal trying to figure out life hahaha, but being in the public eye gives me an opportunity to interrogate my life in a particularly unique way!!

You never really get out of it. You just keep winging it. Especially now that people don't really work or live at the same place their whole life anymore because of how quickly things are changing.

Yup. The housing crisis it's been crazy. People are not happy. We see single moms not being able to find a room to rent, old people being evicted from their houses to turn them in airbnbs, and young folks not beings able to move out of their parents house and start a life of their own. Not to talk about people from 3rd world countries sharing apartments with 20+ others emigrants

About 2 hours from Lisbon, there is a surf and yoga place called Golden Wave Surf Lodge that I think you would really enjoy. They offer surfing lessons as well as a morning and evening yoga class at the lodge, and the town is just a short walk away and leads straight to a beach!

What??!!! I just left Lisbon after a year living there 😍 Wish I had gotten to meet you randomly at a cafe, that would be some casual magic!
Definitely try new things, I joined my uni rock climbing society this week and before the meeting on Monday, my hands were shaking so much I couldn’t write anything but it was so worth it. I’ve never been into sports and it was my first time climbing but it was so worth it even just for the community (and bouldering’s quite enjoyable too, I’m still a total beginner and don’t expect to ever be amazing but it’s enjoyable and that’s the point)

Omg, I'm going to Portugal in a month for a week long Erasmus+ program, we will probably spend one whole day in Lisbon so maybe I'll see you! Hope this experience is super duper lovely for you. Omg when you said you were going to Lisbon, it made so much sense! I'm Portuguese and I think Lisbon will honestly match your vibe so much. I really hope you enjoy the city and culture! If you're into history, I would definitely recommend visiting other cities in Portugal while your there! :) I'm from Porto and I can't recommend it enough. That city is my home.

This is completely f cking disheartening. Me and all my portuguese friends being pushed out of the country due to the unlivable conditions and suffocating housing crisis. And you come and promote our country as the “land of digital nomads”. Part of trying to do the right, responsible, and educated thing, should have been being careful with the way you are promoting this to the huge following you have. This is disgustingly disappointing. I am so sick of yall with big followings being able to pick and choose your ethics when it is most convenient for you.
Our housing crisis will not be solved by you doing community volunteering but I hope you enjoy it!🤗
