Like lord of the rings. I watched it in my childhood and it's my fave movie(s) and now I compare everything to it. Nothing will ever be as epic as these two.
Joaquin Phoenix's acting shines through in this particular scene. In the movie, we as an audience are wrapped up in the gladiators confession but acting wise, the weight is carried on the emperors shoulders. Excellent acting from both actors and very well played scene.
Such a powerful scene. An emperor silenced by the roaring demand of a crowd of thousands. To be in the center of all that, to have the people of what was once a powerful nation cheer for you, to demand you live. Such drama and for Maximus to raise his helmet as a sign of respect and thanks. Amazing, simply amazing.
My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, Commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next
Wow! This scene gives me the chills every time I watch it. Imagine being a legend to the Roman people for your skills in the coliseum, a stage for death and survival. Not even the corrupt emperor, who has already tried to have you killed, can have you executed because of the respect you demand from the citizens. The only thing driving you is the chance for revenge against the man who ordered the murder of your wife and son. Death is no longer feared, only the missed opportunity for vengeance.
Amazing film, even though commodus is evil it shows how good an actor jaoquin phoenix is because of how much he gets you to hate commodus and his fantastic acting when maximus shows up
Actually, in Ancient Rome, it was the opposite. A "thumbs-up" from the Emperor meant for the gladiator to be killed. A "thumbs-down" meant for the gladiator to be spared, to live.
My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, Commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions. Loyal servant to the true Emperor Marcus Aurelius. father to a murded son, husban to a murded wife, and i get my veanege in this life or the next.
I think it's felix because it's meam lucky, successful" in Latin. It was acquired as an agnomen, or nickname, by the 1st-century BC Roman general Sulla. It also appears in the New Testament belonging to the governor of Judea who imprisoned Saint Paul.
I see the Oedipus complex in everything. The Gladiator confronts the evil father, with mother looking on and son admiring. We are all the would be husband of a murdered wife (other mother, taken from us) and the father of a murder son (ourselves, who we killed to grow up into an ego, a gladiator, and eventually, another father.)
Perhaps we are becoming late developers? While we are meant to overcome, and go on to identify with our fathers, the structure that arises - wherein we are continually war within ourselves - retains the traces of the complex from which it originates. See also the last scene of the Immortals, where the gods are still fighting overhead.
We, the viewers do not generally have evil brothers, but we do have fathers that take our mothers leaving us to sleep alone in the dark, who are hence in a sence evil, or a least present us with a fight. Hence, I claim the great popular appeal of a scene with a father mother, son, a great loss, and a fight. Do you have a brother? Perhaps a younger one?

I just dumped this plastic bottle from the Mountain dew I was drinking into the garbage even though there's a recycling bin 10 feet away. Recycling is for chumps!
I love the confusion and fear Phoenix shows without uttering a word. Great acting by all involved.
Richard V 100% agreed. Crowe stated that he wouldn’t have won the Oscar if Phoenix wasn’t so good in impersonating Commodus
They dont make movies as epic as this these days :(
+VLADBOB 007 yes they do ..have you watched mad max?
+wookie sith Mad Max does not count. It is not a historical epic, and it's shit to boot.
Like lord of the rings. I watched it in my childhood and it's my fave movie(s) and now I compare everything to it. Nothing will ever be as epic as these two.
+VLADBOB 007 They do. You just don't like them.
+VLADBOB 007 I've seen plenty of brilliant films these days. Haven't seen an epic done this well in a while, though

Robert Green he really "rose" to the challenge. Like a phoenix you might say!!

Only problem with that is Freud believed the Oedipus Complex existed between 3-6 years of age.
Zlatan👌
Makes your blood go cold.
I'm not sure if the crowd could actually hear anything he said.
Fun historical fact, when the emperor put his thumb down it actually meant not to kill him

Do you have a brother? Perhaps a younger one?
Wasn't that his friend? Next to the emperor? So why didn't he return to his position at general? Since he was already one?
How can Joaquin Change his voice like that
amazing actor
Darrell Patts here's a great character actor; still does great work to this day
imagine being in the crowd during this scene if this ever actually happened.... great fucking drama
Nice

Isn't the Gladiator confronting more of an evil brother? Don't think there is a mother in this story and the son is not related.
