    The acting from Joaquin Phoenix is incredible in this scene. When Russel Crowe delivers his epic line, Phoenix literally looks like he's seeing a vengeful ghost rise up from the grave. He visibly pales, grimaces, and trembles, but in a way that an unstable young ruler would while trying very hard to maintain self control. Fantastic acting.

    • @gooscarguitar
      @gooscarguitar 8 лет назад +81

      Isn't the phrase "ego sum" redundant? And shouldn't it be Marci Aurelii since it's dative?

    • @Firion316
      @Firion316 8 лет назад +66

      The more I think about it I feel that it would actually be more appropriate to use the genitive (possessive) case (he is describing himself as the servant to the emperor, or the emperor's servant, depending on whether that turn of phrase can be directly translated from English). Depending on the translation, you could call him the emperor's servant (genitive) or he gives his service *to* the emperor (dative) Therefore, that section could read "fidelis servus veri imperatoris Marci Aurelii" or "fidelis servus vero imperatori Marco Aurelio."
      While Ego paired with sum is redundant, it can serve as an intensifier (although not usually used). Since he's really dropping a bombshell here, I think an intensifier would be appropriate.
      (For the record, it's been years since I last took latin classes, so I could be way off.)

      I went to the theater on opening day to watch Gladiator in 2000 expecting a Gladiator 2 quality movie, as in an entertaining, expensive but flat movie and I would have been ok with that, instead we got one of the best movies of all time. Went to watch Gladiator 2 on opening day too, I expected exactly that since you cannot top the first one, the movie wasnt shot on film and even though it looked pristine, it lacked that analogue contrast the first one had in 2000, so in a sense, I knew I was going to be entertained but also knew it was never going to be as good as the first one. I'll be there on opening day for Gladiator 3 if it looks like Ridley put at least the same effort he put on Gladiator 2. It's interesting that during this period, Rome was in decline. Think about this movie and King Arthur taking place less than a century later. Christianity offered a reprieve from the corruption and bloodshed, only to be adopted and perverted by the very same leaders that killed the Empire. How is the nephew going to be told the truth? Your uncle killed the greatest leader Rome had seen in hundreds of years.

    • @JohnCenaFan6298

      Really it's not a good quote. Rome is not a democracy nor is it an egalitarian state. The quote is more true if applied in this sense; that the slave wasn't a slave because he was actually a commander of army (thus obviously above the plebians/soldiers).

    • @JohnCenaFan6298
      @JohnCenaFan6298 3 года назад

      @@bobastu Christianity saved the Roman empire but changed the entirety of Europe into a state of kings rather than one emperor. Catholicism specifically is corrupt but more corrupt than it ever was. A little less bloodshed wasn't exactly the goal of Christianity (or frankly, just Catholicism) in the first place. The crusades and man other battles like in Poland or Vienna are justified wars.
