Please leave a message after the tone. if it's important, i'll get back to you. if i dont get back to you, then you know why."

Nah, it needs to be in Latin:
"Ego sum Maximus Decimus Meridius, habitque ducem exercitus ad aquilonem imperator legiones Felix, fidelis servus verus imperator Marcus Aurelius. Legationem post tonum commodo licentia."
Isn't the phrase "ego sum" redundant? And shouldn't it be Marci Aurelii since it's dative?
I love how the other gladiators surround Maximus when he is threatened.
A good leader has men who will kill for him. A great leader has men who will die for him.
He lead them to victory over near certain death, and lead directly from the front. He earned it.

2:22 Hatred, shock, fear, embarrassment, frustration, and submission all in one shot. Joaquin Phoenix was absolutely brilliant in Gladiator
He was. He was a little too good.
The sign of a really great actor....one who can convey so many conflicting emotions simultaneously without uttering a word. It's a rare gift!
One of the all-time great movie villains.
The "busy bee" scene gives me chills.
He's one of those few actors who is so good that you forget you're watching fiction, because he makes it so real.
Should've got the Oscar
One of those rare cinematic moments where everything comes together in perfect harmony. Script, score, performance, editing, cinematography... Genius
Indeed
Whilst there's many scenes in this perfect movie. This moment and the moment Commodus's sister makes the speech at the end are exquisitely perfect
If there's one thing Ridley Scott excels, it's epicness and grandeur personified.
This. The delivery by Crowe of one of the greatest move lines ever. The intensity of Phoenix. The way the core just rolls in at the exact right moment. It's fantastic. It's the perfect scene.
I actually heard that the guy who played the Gladiator (I forgot his name sorry) hated the speech but did it anyway, saying "A good actor can even make a bad script sound good"
"And I'm his younger brother, Minimus"
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I still come back to this comment every now and then to smile
Lmao 😂😂 genuinely a good comment
I am the middle child, Midimus.
And I am their Dad, Dadimus.
The acting from Joaquin Phoenix is incredible in this scene. When Russel Crowe delivers his epic line, Phoenix literally looks like he's seeing a vengeful ghost rise up from the grave. He visibly pales, grimaces, and trembles, but in a way that an unstable young ruler would while trying very hard to maintain self control. Fantastic acting.
Compare this scene with the one he has with Robert De Niro in Joker. He's not a fantastic actor, he's phenomenal.
Joaquin Phoenix est un fabuleux acteur.
Phoenix in this movie its amazing. No one understood... They were concentrated in Russell's role. The real star here is Phoenix, brilliant actor! And that was the beginning...
@@johnscintilla3458 everyone understood, he is one of the most hated villains in screen history.
One detail that absolutely sells it for me is the shaking of his hand as he tries to decide if he'll spare them or not. Phenomenal scene.
Commodus made the oldest villain mistake in the book: never ask the hero who he is! They will always respond with a badass monologue or one-liner
It's badass because it's the truth right in the open.
Or they will kill you in a shoot out and stick a harmonica in your mouth.
I wonder how many tourists have said this inside the Colloseum?
Still is and always will be one of the Greatest scenes in cinematic history. The casting for this movie was just perfection.. The actors really gave a lifetime performance
This scene drew the most applause, but in IMHO the most subtle and interesting scene happens after the next round, when he refers to commodus as highness, and walks away showing his back to the emperor
Russell Crowe's acting was great, but Joaquin Phoenix did such an amazing job as well. You have to be a great actor to make people hate you as much as we hated him.
The whole movie was fantastic but I cannot watch it again because the scene where the Roman soldiers run over Maximus' son looked too real to me. The same with the throat-cutting scene in Braveheart. I'm not squeamish, I just hate when the bad guys get away with evil.
So true. I appreciate the evil actors, like Joffrey from GOT
bingo!!!
@Ron Hatfield This was very very very very loosely based on real events. Just one example, Commodus never died in the Arena, and this scene about the gladiator revealing himself is completely fictional
I agree. On a lighter note though Trump and Modi must be top contenders for Oscars. They have much fan following and still a tad more people that hate them Worldwide. LoL.
Its scary how good Phoenix is at playing the "bad guy"
What would skeletor know about being a good villain?
As good as Crowe is in this movie I actually thought Joaquin Phoenix stole the show. He was/is an amazing actor.

The scene when the Emperor walks away & Maximus gives Quintis a nod & the soldier's hand to the chest is brilliant.. It shows that Maximus still has respect & for Quintis.
Nope, he was mocking Quintus...mostly implying "I will kill you for betraying me"
@@eddiemcnulty1978 he wasn't showing respect lol
He was basically telling him "I remember what you did".
Quintus betraying commodus at the end was due to him finally realising what a fool and monster he was. Especially after he stabbed maximus before the final fight so also a coward. And he threatened quintus earlier on too
@@Mainlyeverything I believe the OP was closest with his/her analysis.
Maximus gave a soldier's gesture to show Quintus that he understood he was only following orders.
It was a very minute detail, but I believe it was this gesture from Maximus that allayed Quintus' mind and guilt and ultimately led to him choosing to turn on Commodus at the end.
@@SlouchingBadger what changed quintus mind was a deleted scene when maximus was tied up before the final duel
And then commodus stabbing him in the back acting like a coward
@@SlouchingBadger No, Mainly Everything has the correct analysis. There's more depth to the gesture that Maximus displays torwards Quintus than just "you're still my bro". It's shown in Maximus's facial expression, he's mocking Quintus with the "strength and honor" gesture because he knows that Quintus betrayed him, and he hasn't forgotten that fact.

Russel Crowe is also one of my favourite actors, so it's big plus too :)
The pure terror on Joaquin's face says it all. Gives you chills. Russel's voice and Zimmer's swelling and ominous music behind it make this an unforgettable scene for sure.
it all came together as close to perfect as you can get...it was one of the only movies I have ever seen where I walked out of the theatre thinking I wouldn't have changed a thing!

The music is outstanding!!!!
I've always loved how Commodus holds the kid in front of him like a human shield in a really subtle way pretending to give him affection.

@30'ROUND'DRUM It's a line from the movie.
"A power to amuse a mob"
It's interesting that during this period, Rome was in decline. Think about this movie and King Arthur taking place less than a century later. Christianity offered a reprieve from the corruption and bloodshed, only to be adopted and perverted by the very same leaders that killed the Empire. How is the nephew going to be told the truth? Your uncle killed the greatest leader Rome had seen in hundreds of years.
Really it's not a good quote. Rome is not a democracy nor is it an egalitarian state. The quote is more true if applied in this sense; that the slave wasn't a slave because he was actually a commander of army (thus obviously above the plebians/soldiers).
@@bobastu Christianity saved the Roman empire but changed the entirety of Europe into a state of kings rather than one emperor. Catholicism specifically is corrupt but more corrupt than it ever was. A little less bloodshed wasn't exactly the goal of Christianity (or frankly, just Catholicism) in the first place. The crusades and man other battles like in Poland or Vienna are justified wars.

As a humble historian, my comments are...Commanders of the northern armies were basically the most powerful generals in the empire as they commanded an army of several veteran legions, cavalry & war machines and could march easily on Rome by crossing the Rubicon River as Julius Caesar had done before..that's why they and this top General in "Gladiator" were such a threat to the emperor...several of them even became emperors after overthrowing the previous civilian emperor( four such Generals in succession took the throne, albeit for very short rules )

ok I'm gonna sound old here, but they do not make movies like this anymore.
You are right
Hacksaw Ridge- True Story!
Yea Will Smith After Earth.
Not movies, but there are some great TV shows that are much better if you like this.
@@sh0cktim3 Name some ?
2:58 the subtle gesture to general Quintus, even after he arranged for his family to be killed.
I snuck into adjacent screenings ti watch this repeatedly. A formative film for sure.
The movie would’ve ended here if that boy didn’t come out, lol
Probably why he came out then
*Insert Kratos God of Father man declaring the gender of his one and only son*
😂
In a way, its OK in this scene. Plans do not always go smoothly, but Maximus adapted.
@@gorillaguy5664 Wtf?
Its still amazes me how a 20 yrs film still can make me feel like this one.
I miss the old days where good films were made.
I love how the crowd in the upper rows heard Maximus say "..."
My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the phoenix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.
Please leave a message and I will get back to you as soon as I can
Wow! Epic line! But so true! 👍😄

I've been a Pretorian for almost 20 years, Pretoria South Africa.😁
Such a powerful scene. He said his name in the most powerful scene.
One of the greatest, most iconic scenes of all time.
This is a literal challenge to present better scenes, and I welcome it.
The charge of the rohirrim in LOTR is up there as well
@@villacresesrenato There are so many movies that can make one cry...recently I have watched slumdog millionaire which is to me even more intense than gladiator 🙏 But I do not compare 🙏
Maximus: Commodus, one small thing, when you bring me out, can you introduce me as "Maximus Decimus Meridius, Commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife" ?
Underrated comment 😂
Commodus: You’re awful Maximus.
Maximus: I’m awful? How am I awful?
Commodus: You try to take my throne. Refuse to serve me. You just wanted to take power away from me. You’re just like the rest of them.
AND i WILL GET MY REVENGE.

@@antonioferrari241 wow I laughed at the reference

lol
Had to give you a thumbs up. Made me laugh my ass off. LIVE AGAIN MR RUSH.
absolute most beautiful scene in cinema history
Phoenix and Russell are 2 of the best actors whose work is not appreciated enough! Their transformation into the characters they play is INCREDIBLE!
Joaquin's acting was so underrated in this movie! He did it so well that I cant even stand his character 😂
Underrated??? How??? He won a golden Globe and got and Oscar nomination lmao
He reason why everyone is now noticing Joaquin's acting is becus of him playing the Joker
I'll keep saying this till I run out of heartbeats, but Joaquin Phoenix was robbed in this movie. His performance was that of a young Olivier and he should have got an Oscar.
Couldn't agree more.
hear hear
Yup. Nailed it and of course he's great in anything he's in.
OFFICIAL AN4B0LIKA CHANEL is
underrated actor
This movie has the greatest soundtrack of all time
i just love the alliteration in his name and how the words were arranged in the quote..absolutely perfect
