"Solutions are always there," you said. Awesome. You have a great approach to getting bikes going again in a practical but beautiful way. Super. In all these restoration vids on yt, the bike is supposed to look like brand new after all the work. But in reality, the perfect is the enemy of the good. A used and worn, but functional and good enough bike is also perfect. Great job.

I like these bikes that you make out of what you can get your hands on free or cheap. Mudguards and a rack and you've got a decent cheap "beater bike".

Nice all-round adventure bike! I did the same thing with my 1994 Schwinn fully ridgid mtn bike. A bike like this can do a lot-road, gravel or even dirt mtn bike trails. I put bar ends on my flat bar to give me different hand position options.
I've definitely begun to apprciate bar ends a bit!

If you want that surface rust out of the inside of the bolts. I use a dremel tool with a tiny wire brush. Sometimes coat with a clearcoat to protect it afterwards.

It's funny how quickly a "parts bin" fills up. I probably have enough parts to make two complete bikes now, I must have a clear out LOL !
That's the hardest thing to do... Cause like.... What if you need the stuff "one day" haha

Great video! Some of the spokes looked strangely bent near the elbows in that shot where you were putting the rear hub bearings in.

Is that a bike fork specific die cutter or a general use one that you used for threading the steerer?

this actually looks a decent frame. with some nice details like the rear lugs, S-branded seat tube through the frame and neat welds. wht is the weight like?
No idea I'm afraid. It didn't feel lightweight... but then it didn't feel like a heavyweight either.
Looking to upgrade an older 1979 Raleigh to a modern groupset, is it even possible? I'm worried about the bb mainly..
Some older Raleighs had slightly different threading in the BB. But you could probably tap it out to Italian threads if you know a bike shop with the taps (they can be rather expensive). You will also need to spread the rear spacing quite a bit and may therefore also need to realign the dropouts.
Sure it is! As Ben says though, the BB threading "could" be an issue. Raleigh liked to use their own standard of 26TPI and a shell width of I think 70mm. I can't remember an exact date of when they switched to a standard 68mm shell with 24tpi threading though. That would be the main issue. A threadless BB may work but they tend to be designed for 68mm shells. You can replace the axle and keep the Raleigh cups. Use a square taper axle designed for 73mm mtb shells... but then you have to stay square taper. And yes, rear spacing will have to be spread to accept a modern wheelset

Tips, 90 degree from pivot point to pads to cable on canti brakes. Yours are set way too high. Also your chain looks too long, biggest gear should only have a little bend left in the rear hanger. You may get better tension by doing this if not adjustable cheap shifter. Cool build, the top steering tube didn't look flush, bearing cups sorted that ish.

@@michealtaylor2645 I think they're actually 26tpi weirdly. (Just checked Sheldon Brown's Headset Crib Sheet and they are indeed 26 tpi)
@@MonkeyShred defo a difficult one to get hold of I can order a 1 1/8 th 24tpi through work but there’s no 26tpi in the catalogue unfortunately I’ll keep an eye out thank you anyway been a fan for a while since the first build on the diamond back when my little boy was first born he was 7 weeks early so your visitors kept me going the long nights keep up the good work thanks again

26 x 2.2" I think. All I remember is they're described as "balloon" on the tyres themselves so theyre big!
Hi, I was wondering if you usually weight your frames out of curiosity. The thing is I have a frame I believed it would weight around 5.7lbs because it has a 4130 sticker on it but it weights 7.2lbs, just like a cheaper hi-tensile frame and I'm baffled. It's a Scott Sawtooth frame. The sticker can't be fake because I've seen other Sawtooth frames with the same sticker... I don't understand. The tubes aren't even oversized or anything, quite the opposite. I had another chromoly frame of the same size 21'' and it weighted 5.7lbs...
I've weighed some before yeah, not all though. I guess variations could come from tubes being butted/double butted, the exact placement of those tubes (eg, a 531 frame only having the "main tubes" in 531), geometry, lugs, bottom bracket, dropouts, extra mounts etc.
