Looks like you know what you're doing with a bike. I learned some tips here. I'll watch some more so that I can learn more. Thanks for taking the time to produce this video.
Yeah, 1x7-8 or 9 is my go to as well for moderate terrain, urban commuters I've converted. Lock the front der and use an Origin8 46-48t chainring. Usually it's a 14-28 7sp freewheel or 12-26 7 sp cassette. But, 1x is the way to go.
Thanks for posting again Mark, looks a great pub bike ! I appreciate the fact that even when you are not narrating, the combination of the pace and detail/camera work (and the odd sigh or mutter ! 😉 ) enable someone with a little knowledge, like myself, to pick up some useful tips, such as your tweaking the spokes on the front wheel ! Good luck with the sale !
@@MonkeyShred You are a cool kid so perhaps.. A double I don't mind but a triple is an ugly set up and un-neccessary. However I really like your videos and your excellent collection of bikes so this isn't a big deal.
Nice one! ❤ You should have swapped the concave washers vice versa on the rear V-brakes; the thinner ones should go inside in this case. This way, the levers won't be so spread outwards but will be nice and parallel instead
Unsolicited advice: in order to maximize mechanical advantage (leverage) the vertical portion of the arm (usually the lowest part which is closer to the screw) should be as close as possible to vertical when the pads contact the rim. Beyond that angle, the brake system starts losing power drastically. Most shimano, but not tektro, v-brake arms flare outwards to provide room for chunky tyres. This is normal.
Hi Mark, and thanks for yet another great video. To comment on your issue with the triple - i currently have a Japanese-made commuter (circa 2013) with a triple, and the stock gearing on Shimano cranks is 48-36-26, which seemed weird to me as well. Works well with an Altus front mech (some Mega Drive one, can look up the part number if it's of any use) Cheers!
As far as a cheap bike goes this one is of good quality I made note of the altus on the back I got a pretty good buy on some tourneys add this usual I learned several things on this video got quite a bit of work to do I got an ill so I lost about 3 weeks one bike should not be hard to finish so get it done this weekend new cables etc over in the UK our family has a lease on on a townhouse or brewhouse whatever you want to call it someone stole my old triumph three-speed from the shed I wonder if it was a renter or someone else I suppose I would have to consider finding something if I went back over there shouldn't be that hard anyway I've got quite a bit of getting caught up on my work it just seems something always needs adjustments over here well thanks again I found that very entertaining
That yellow grip might have been saveable with some Dasty and a toothbrush. I'm not sure how easy it is to get in the UK but ive saved many grips and even bar tape with it. Just the basic yellow stuff in a sprayer bottle. Cheap too, as its not a bike specific thing. Definitely worth seeing if you can get your hands on it Mark!
Good to see you are still at it mate 👍🏼 I dropped out of the hobby due to knee problems so haven’t been checking bike videos much. I still get out sometimes on the Raleigh Twenty folded up in the back of my van but no serious cycling. Do miss working on bikes, really enjoyed the video, as always 😊
You managed to build a nice used everyday bike on a low budget. The market's sales crisis of new bikes led me buying a new niche bike GT 29" BMX with gears and disc brakes with a 50% discount, but unfortunately in the end there will be no discount for me when upgrade parts are bought, that's how it is with most hobbies.. Greetings from Croatia
Nice job Mark👍 Simple is definitely best - I 'm just not a fan of gripshifters because every one I have had on a bike I've bought to restore has had a broken leaf spring. Thankfully NOS 7 and 8 speed trigger shifters are cheap on eBay these days .
Thanks! Yeah I think a trigger would look a little better but I had them spare and they function well. Love that you can trim the front derailleur slightly too.
rage quit IG again... can't sell my pub bike.. 1990 alta with Sakae Ringyo MTS-101 you have the best process of all of the group we know. I tossed my CBBO Nishiki.. BB stuck and slightly messed rear triangle I've never had the more than 10 problem with FD but I think it's always been the smallest one.. because I have plenty of 22(32-34)44 triples and as well a 26 38 48 biopace 200gs original equipment
Yeah the inner to middle I haven’t had problems with but I’ve definitely run in to problems with middle to outer a few times and it’s always been a 36 to 48 combo. Could always be the choice of front derailleur though I guess.

cheap bikes are satisfactory bikes to build (and enjoy)
I hope so!
More than satisfactory, i think for most of us without deep pockets its the best way to go. Plus the pain of "separation"😂 is less too.
I don't agree. While cheap bikes are worthwhile, they are horrible to work on with their cheap nasty parts, some of which seem to be made from cheese.
Nice to see you back Mark
Thank you!
I went a step further and ditched the front derailleur for a 1x7 config. Even simpler when you’re carrying beer and pizzas.
I’ve never tried to mount a pizza to my seat tube before 😉 sounds complicated.

Nice and simple always wins! 👍
Absolutely! It’s a great little beater.
Nice. simple and very functional.
Defo!
Great old bike with SACHS shifter.
I only watched this to see the cat. 🙂
Cheers from Germany
Thanks for watching! She made quite the appearance this time.
Always for the cat 🤣
Yes the cat is the best art of this build. Triple chain rings scream out that this is a horrible bike. I love it.
@@jeremynorth all the cool kids ride triple still.

Very nice bike and lovely to see Torvi again. Yay !
She’s the star.
awsome build Mark !!!!
Thanks!

I’ll check that out. I didn’t even notice the arms were spread!

Good to see you back trust that you’re doing well.. This would have been a nice 1X also cheers 🇨🇦
Thanks. Luckily the freehub is the 8+ speed version (just currently spaced for 7 speed) so in the future the new owner(s) could always add more gears
Great nice simple build, mate 👍 I really like the older Raleigh non m-trax frames clean lines and simple and ride nice 👌
Cheers bud!

Ah interesting! I do wonder if it was more of an issue with the front derailleur design.
I had sachs wavey shifters on my Cannondale since the mid 90’s. A great shifter. I’ve just done a resto mod build so only just replaced them
Awesome! They seem a pretty solid shifter.

Torvi! We missed you!
She’s been supervising a lot more with the weather getting warmer 🙂

Thanks for the tip. Looking at it - it was pretty worn out so it was best to replace it
Very similar to my bike except I've gone one x nine , but it does everything i need for bugger all cost 👍
Always potential for more gears on the rear on this. It already has the 8+ speed freehub 🙂
Good to see you are still at it mate 👍🏼

Ah sorry to hear that! What a pain. Glad to hear you’re still getting out occasionally though.
Thanks mate. You’ve given me an idea to look for a retro unisex/ladies MTB, something easier to step through! 👍🏼
I love bicycles
Me too
Nice building, clean, elegant, simple. I love it ✌️😁
Thank you!
That cat!!! 😻😻😻
She’s a cutie.
nice build andso satisfying to see a parts bin build 🙂 and hi Torvey!
Got a few more to do I reckon before the spares are thinned out 😅
I love old school ridged mtn bikes
You can always rely on them.
Was that Norwegian 19:38?
Any chance of getting any Torvi inspired merch? Stickers maybe??
😂 Good idea.
Cheap bikes are the best bikes
Definitely!

I don’t think this would draw too much attention but yes - always lock your bike!

@MonkeyShred I wonder how seatpost angle makes these things react.. my 1990 200gs Biopace unit is glorious.. just doesn't say XTR anywhere
I've ridden with another bike frame tied with rope to my back. This is the way.
Just always got to hope nobody tries to be ‘funny’ and grab the frame as you’re riding by.
How do I find it on eBay
Search!
Accumulating is easy. Getting rid of your builds is hard lol. I got 5 builds left then I'm done for a long time.
Right?! Pretty difficult to shift them unless they’re ridiculously cheap at the moment
id love to take one of your bikes off your hands but I am in Canada so exchange rate and shipping is insane
Yeah 😅 shipping to Canada wouldn’t be worth it at all. It would be insane.
Sick
Thanks.
03:19 mildly disturbing
Bad experience at customs?
He said "hair spray"? Why?
It lubricates when sliding on the grip, and when it dries it's like a mild glue to stop the grips rotating
Thank you Demon!
