    In this video: I recently picked up this 1989 Marin Palisades. It had been owned since new by the same person and had clearly been well used but also maintained! I wanted to give it a Spray.Bike restoration with a modern twist.

    There's something about these old pre-suspension 26" mountain bikes that just looks "right" to my eyes. I agree about using a threadless stem adapter. It just wouldn't have looked right. Only change I'd make it using riser bars (but that is because I'm old lol)

    • @oftankoftan
      @oftankoftan 3 года назад +1

      best part is they'd probably smoke gravel bikes on trails.

    • @MonkeyShred
      @MonkeyShred  3 года назад

      I was originally going to use threadless so I could fit some 31.8mm modern wide bars to it but I'm more happy with the Girvin and the narrow bars now. Especially because the Girvin is pink :)

    • @retromod7525
      @retromod7525 3 года назад

      Agree totally. They also make brilliant heavy duty commuter/town bikes when built up properly.

      @@oftankoftan
      eh, gravel bikes are essentially just retro mtbs with drop bars from what i can tell. If this Marin had 28" or 27.5" wheels and drop bars, it would look almost indistinguishable from what people call a "gravel bike".

      I converted to 1x8: 11-40 cassette in the back, 40 tooth narrow-wide chainring in the front. Makes for a good cruiser with some climbing ability. Everything else cosmetic: Schwalbe Billy Bonkers, changed saddle and grips, got a front rack for the commuter look 👍 but coming from road bikes everything takes ages

    You can get thread-less stem adapters that have a sharper angle between the two diameters, so less of it sticks out. It doesn’t matter anyway because that Girvin stem looks really good. I really want to try one of those stems. I bet it makes for a wild ride.

    Great restoration and retro paint scheme👍. I was curious to know, with some of the older late 80s and early 90s MTB frames, is it possible that the frame and forks can accommodate 27.5 wheels or is the spacing a bit to tight for circumference height? I'm guessing hub width on a 27.5 wheel would be ok to slot straight in or am I wrong? 🤔

  • @vivoslibertos
    @vivoslibertos 3 года назад

    Alternative way for the stem adapters is using the lower part only cut the the upper parts and use am adaptor shim, it looks good on slam position. Though some case you might want to re-thread the long stem screw.

    • @MonkeyShred
      @MonkeyShred  3 года назад

      That might be a bit dodgy if the stem isn't properly inserted or the adapter isn't in to the fork enough. I've took in bikes before where the stem was run WAY too high and it damaged the fork.

    • @vivoslibertos
      @vivoslibertos 3 года назад

      @@MonkeyShred There's stem adapter that isn't in tapered shape, so you can really slam the stem. Also if the adapter long enough you can put spacers between the stem and the headset, kinda mimicking the ahead stem system in case you need higher cockpit setup.

    I love that moment when you turn the cranks, shift the gears and it all works. Then you spend four hours getting it just right, the brakes are out, the front mech won't shift, the front wheel has some how got buckled from the time you put it in till now.
    But just before you toss it in the nearest skip, you drop it and realise, if I tweak that, it'll be fine...

      Nope. I've often found 7 Speed freehubs will accept 10 speed cassettes.

      @@MonkeyShred I think that there is a 5 mil difference between the gaps between the dropouts on my old Scott Tampico 1994 model MTB and the OLD distance of wheels with 8 or 9 speed freehubs. That MTB is off the road and at some point I want to buy a new rear wheel and fit a new gear cassette and chain.

      That said, you’d need to fit a brace to the front and rear so the frame doesn’t snap

    Does 10 speed fit on a vbake specific hub ? Whats the rear hub ?

    • @MonkeyShred
      @MonkeyShred  3 года назад +1

      There isn't really a V Brake specific hub. From my experience a 10 speed cassette can slot on to a 7,8 and 9 speed freehub. Some of the older 7 speeds may not be compatible though.

    How to say "Marin":
    1. Say "marinate"
    2. Say "marin" like in "marinate'. Make a note: Option 1
    3. Say "Marin" but not like in marinate. Repeat that a few times. Make a note: Option 2
    4. Do Option 1 and Option 2 sound different? Good. Stick with Option 2 and you'll fit right in out here on the West Coast of nowhere.
    5. Say "huh?" but make it real long. Huuhhh?

      Walmart level 😂 Pretty sure a Marin is well about a Walmart level bike but thanks!

      @@MonkeyShred Well it sure came out nice. Now you have endless hours invested in a $300 commuter bike.The Walmart dig was just a point of reference comparing the quality of entry level bike shop brands to department store brands .Now if you had put that effort into a Marin with a hand made American frame and adorned it with quality vintage components, you would end up with something collectable and even enjoyable to ride in the dirt. Bicycles are a lot like guitars. Dolling up a $300 Stratocaster serves no purpose. It might look pretty, but there is a reason Fender and Marin produce and sell ten different levels of product.Cheers.
