In this video: Last year I picked up a rough early 90s Marin. It had a few parts sprayed black but was mostly original so I was able to match it with a 1990 Eldridge. In this video I'll restore it back to original "ish" colours!
I love a bit of MonkeyShred - I always find it a very relaxing watch and I love how the guy saves old bikes to be ridden again.
Or locked away in the garage muahahaha. Nah I genuinely love to ride them and show them to the world.
Totally
Pro trick : you can watch series on flixzone. Me and my gf have been using them for watching a lot of movies lately.
@Ricardo Jordy yea, I have been using Flixzone} for months myself :)
A lot of vintage mountain bike are being saved in 2024 good video
We've been saving them for a while now :)
Удивительно как приятно смотреть на восстановление велосипеда прошлого -- БРАВО за этот трудный проект .
Nice touch with the talc, not many people do that anymore.
Marin was 10 years ahead with this design, I love their bikes. Marin and Kona, those are special..
I'm yet to do a Kona!
I'm glad to see you paid the special effects budget for the tire installation. Great build. Looks brilliant!
Unfortunately Torvi doesn't get her chicken this week.... that special effect cleaned me out.
Amazing restoration
Glad you like it
Great rebuild, the diffrent between the decals and the Fork, in my opinion it doesn't really matter. It looks great. Nice Bike.
Best regards and stay well my Bike friend.
🚴♂️🤩👍
Thanks 👍 It does really "pop"! Love it!
paint looks amazing, love that 2k clear coat!
Cheers! Me too! I'll definitely be using from now on... in fact, I'm going to take apart the pink / blue Marin and add a 2K clear to that
@@MonkeyShred I’d be interested in seeing this in a video. Or maybe, as the 2K doesn’t last once activated, maybe adding a bit of left over 2K clear to the existing paint finish on a spare frame to preserve the patina/decals?
Nice rebuilding marin bike...I'm the one who going to build vintage marin. I've been looking for the group set and others part....I will make like this video....inspiring...
Good luck with your build.
Nice build! I picked up an old rock hopper a while back, just been sitting. Now i wanna get her fixed up. You’re very inspiring!
Thanks! Get on it! Good luck with the build!
love how you did the tire trick...plus love the GRIVIN head bar stem
Trick? That's how I install all my tyres ;)
@@MonkeyShred it was a first time and very cool..
My Federal MTB 1995's have been restored and still looks good. I use it every go ride and I still like it.
Good to hear!
Вы очень талантливый веломостар-респект вам и уважение:)!!!
Awesome build! Enjoy watching it 👏
Thank you! 👍
Such a cool build. I am looking into that brand of spray paint for my next build
The tire drop shot was very rad
Thanks!
Awesome build pal. Thank you.
Thanks for tuning in!
Looks great man! Really enjoyed this build. Keep em coming.
Thanks! Will do!
🤩🤩👌looks awsome, the kind of bike I dreamed of in my teens and I can only afford now in my 30s.lol
Another great video mate.
Thanks! There is definitely something about these old Marin's. They always look so good!
@@MonkeyShred That is a spam comment.
Great job and paint... I enjoy so much your video!
Thank you very much!
Great effort! Super cool build. Those early Mariins were a matt black that turned to grey as they aged. You have captured a great look with the colours you chose. Personally I may have tried a matt lacquer as an experiment 🤔 high five to you!
Thanks! They were black originally? Interesting! I always thought looking at catalogues they were a dark or light grey
@@MonkeyShred, it was the Bear Valley that was the original ‘Stealth Fighter’ matt black whereas the others were dark grey. You’re quite right! I almost bought one but then plumped for a Kona Cindercone...loved the frame and forks geometry and look (Project Twos plus a sloping top tube anyone?) and I could be a Suntour clicking iconoclast in a sea of Shimano...
Looks sick love the brake pads
Now sponsored by Kool Stop ;) I wish!
Paint job awesome
Thanks 👍
One for the algorithm overlord...
No but really it looks great!
Algorithm overlord? I could do with finding a way to beat him!
@@MonkeyShred Keep pumping out the great content! It is the only way to appease him!
Damn... your tire magic game is ON POINT !!! 👍
The secret ingredient is baby powder...
Nice build. That color combo is sick too!
Thanks! Yhe I'm loving how it all works together!
Oddly satisfying. Thanks for posting.
Exquisite build. Black chainring bolts I think would give a more period look, while still adding a bit of flare.
I was hoping the "fire red" of the decals would be more red so the chainring bolts and seatpost clamp would match more!
Lovely build as always
Much appreciated!
I’m liking that adjustable stem, very handy
Oh it's not adjustable. Just "suspension"!
I have a 33yr old dawes and get out 2 or 3 times a week if I can. It doesn't look a patch on this one but you're giving me ideas.
Go for it! Hope the ideas work out for you
very nice color combination. i like the fresh look of the bike
Congratulations it looks excellent!
Thank you!
Nice work as ever Mr Monkeyshred
Cheers dude!
Grey orange...nice combination
They contrast well.
I had a 1994 Marin Eldridge Grade - the silver with red accents. It was a proper good bike for the time, with a full LX spec.
And that’s the black LX group right? Nice group that!
Another banger!! Looks great!
Banger! That's what we like to hear!
This was a pretty cool bike once you redone everything
It was! I want another!
O........................M.......................G , EXCELLENT JOB .
Awesome job, as always. 😍
Cheers!
Damn cool..very much like the color way..love marin bike.
Thanks. These old Marin's really did grab your attention with the colours.
Nice tyre fitting.
It's the only way to fit them ;)
You're a pro with the can, now it's time you go for the compressor.
I don’t have the facilities unfortunately
@@MonkeyShred yeah, that type of upgrade requires a lot of space. But I'm pretty sure you could do awesome bikes with that.
Awesome build im gonna get some montana paints next week !
Good luck with your build!
That’s nuts!
Thanks!
magnificent job!
Appreciate it!
wow!! what a beauty, congrats!!
Thank you! I love the contrasts :)
You did great. I mean, I would have put a 1x with wide ratio cassette, drops and brifters. But that's just my preference. The finish looks fantastic though. The cool stops salmon fit perfectly with your color scheme. I enjoyed watching the build.
Cheers! Maybe that layout is for a future build!
@6.40
nice. i had to get an extra long bolt for the shimano tool.
they can be hard as hell to move.
good job.
Oh yeh those original BBs can be a right pain sometimes. I always bolt the tools on now for added security.
Theres something satisfying about the ping when a cage bolt thats been sitting for decades breaks loose
Amen to that!
cracking build again - you must be very happy with your painting skills?
the state on that BB though!!!!
Definitely enjoying the painting more and seeing the finish improve!
Perfect Sunday evening viewing 👍 Love that colour. Ever used a can gun when using rattle cams for spraying?
Thanks. I haven't used one of those adapters yet. I've seen them around though.
Damn man, I had to come back and watch again, I love the result of this so much. I have a cannondale that I need to weld a section on, and I’m thinking I’ll paint the back half, and that red colour would look dope. I wonder if this paint is in Australia, and more importantly affordable. This bike is so nice though, if it was mine I’d never sell it lol
Ah thanks! I find the Montana paint from Graff City, maybe they ship down under?
@@MonkeyShred it looks like there is a stockist here in Aus about an hour from me, but my wife’s family is maybe 10 minutes away, so that is handy. They don’t seem to be too so that’s rad.
Beautiful restoration, can I ask where you got the bottle holders in that colour? Or did you spray them?
Sehr schön👍
Danke!
Great video. I have a question: would the bottom and head brackets, groupset etc from a 2016 aluminium Marin fit on a 90s Marin Eldridge steel frame?
I have no idea of the sizes on the 2016. BB. Headset etc might be different sized
Lovely work and a nice bike! Daft question...what are the chain ring bolts that you used...?
Ignore that question...read the description, followed the link and ordered some. Apologies for the sudden rush of degreaser to the brain 🙃
Haha no worries. There's plenty of different styles out there.
Just bought an Eldridge and to work on it this year, had one in the early 90’s and adored it.
What paint codes did you use?
Blimey. This was a while back. Not sure I remember them but I’m sure I’ve mentioned them in the video somewhere. Or perhaps it was the vid where I sprayed this bike in detail.
Cool bike
Thanks!
You’re getting the hang of this...
Just pushing further
That really came out gorgeous; well done! Do we get to see how she rides?
Of course!
Great job dude. What about a Smoke / Dart combo for the tyres. Real retro. I think you can still get them?
Thanks! Yeh you can still get them. I have a couple of sets floating around for other builds but this one I wanted the full contrast against the black.
I’ve got a 1994 Marin Muirwoods that I have had since new and am now using as a gravel type bike. Thinking of replacing chain and cassette but notice it is a 7 speed 13-30 cassette which seem impossible to buy anymore. Really like the 30 for grinding up steep inclines and worry a 28 such as you seem to use wouldn’t have the same punch, any thoughts/ advice?
I was recently looking around for 8 speed cassettes and found them in 30/32 from SRAM but pretty much everywhere is out of stock until late summer.... or even winter apparently! They may have a 7 speed cassette too with that range but I guess that'll be out of stock too.
I redid my 2008 Muirwoods as a 1X with a 42T chainring and a 11-42T SRAM cassette. Very pleased with the results. Probably not the answer you're looking for.
Great resto - what was the frame size?
As I stated in the paint video this bike is banging you really nailed this one. I hope you are going to keep it and not sell it . This one is a keeper. Cheers
I would really struggle parting with this one but there isn't space for everything at the mo!
@@MonkeyShred Hi Again. I am interested in buying this bike and also in tamworth. Don't know if you can do private messages on RUclips but if you're selling I'm keen. Get back to me if you will. Thanks. Chris cmmolloy1@gmail.com
looks awsome !!!!!!!
Thanks!
Great job. Btw, what kind grease did you use? White lithium grease?
Beautiful 😁
Thank you! 😊
Hey man another great build and Video. You should check out Kobra LP spray paint. They do a HP one too. That 2K spray max stuff is the Business. I just used their Primer on a build and It's rock solid stuff. A little tricky to use but worth it for the start of the Process.
Thanks. I'll have to have a look at that
Perfecto 💪💪💪💪
Gracias 🙏
Amazing restro, where do you get replacement decals from as that's the part that stops me from stripping down a frame or forks. Thanks again.
I always try and link everything I've sourced in the description should you need to find things.
That bike is dead sexy 😁 looks like a keeper enjoy😎
It would definitely be hard to part with!
Beauty!
Cheers Tony
What is the name of the pink colour you used? Love it
It’s in the previous video 😉
fantastic build! just one thing- cantis, especially with those old-fashioned straddle cables, can fail catastrophically if there isn't something in the way.
if the cable snaps, the straddle will fall onto the tyre and immediately lock up the wheel. reflectors or mudguards would stop this from happening, or the newer shimano integrated straddles would make it less likely (but not prevent it completely!)
Fingers crossed that won't happen!
Awesome job, are those waterslide decals?
Nope. They sticky decals!
Where you get that grey color I been looking but haven’t found it
The exact colour is in the previous video :)
do you know where i can buy the jockey wheel bolts for this Deore rear derailuer??? i am currently rebuilding my 1992 Mongoose IBOC Sport.. one of the jockey wheel bolt got rounded.
Unfortunately not!
@@MonkeyShred can i check with you on replacement chain, for those early 90s 7X3speed shimano.. will the KMC X8 chain fit?
16:40 glad the bird liked it too!
Haha, I noticed that aswell.
I didn't even notice that!
yeah! 🤘
Looks like a Jamie that I have ! So similar 🤔
A Jamie?
@@MonkeyShred l misspelled its Jamis not Jamie these fingers don’t work on such a small keyboard as well especially with spellcheck always changing things 🙈me bad ! Monkey too !
😊Update.....my next project: restoring my 95' MARIN PINE MOUNTAIN....you are an inspiration. I would like to use the bike for gravel and bikepacking, currently it's my city bitch...actually too good for that. Greetings from Germany.
👍👍
yeah ride it
It’ll be ridden 😏
It’s got 1991 decals... Anyway. Have you thought about experimenting with a stone effect paint? I thought this build was a bit tatty compared to some of your other work.
The decals are almost identical. I made sure they were altered in spacing to match on the downtube. The bike didn't have the original Eldridge though so I couldn't really match that. The other decal that is ever so slightly different is the "designed" decal. It has a white diamond behind it rather than jsut the box.
Tatty? You were watching the same video right?
@@MonkeyShred Yeah. Just the metal finish of the frame and some of the paint. I thought the Pine Mountain looked like a far more polished attempt. Regarding the decals; What I meant was. The 1991 bikes were color-matched. 1990 were white.
@@ektrolleyboy I don't know how I didn't notice that! It's so glaringly obvious when I look back at the catalogues
Finally this is a proper paint job out of a rattle can. Good work! You are no longer awarded with the 1st place trophy for the "most ugliest paintjob I have ever seen on a RUclips-Bike-Restoration". Nice that you kept trying out and improve your paint skills! Well done! Montana Gold are exellent quality spray cans. BTW the produce a clear (matte and glossy) which works perfect with thier Gold-Series but it is not 2K tough. Now keep up the good work. Cheers Ben :-)
Haha no no - I'm keeping that trophy! I do enjoy learning new things though and seeing the progress makes me happy.
@3:45
No rear derailleur hanger ? Interesting
It does have a hanger? It's not a removeable one mind.
Some bike! A keeper, yes?
Possibly! It is for sale for the right price but I do love how it came together
I am sort of missing the focusing sound :)
Haha I'm sure it pops in occasionally
Girvin Flexstem
Psyched
Now it's your turn ;)
@@MonkeyShred if I can get close to this I’ll be stoked . Amazing effort mate
Wanna restore mine?
Orange fork is ugly 👎
A great resto, and I've loved watching it! Loads of questions too...I'll inbox you over at Instagram.
