In this video: Last year I picked up this weathered and worn Raleigh. I'd spotted the Reynolds 531 decal and the Deore group. After a bit of digging I'd found a match in the catalogues... a Raleigh Avanti. A fairly uncommon bike but this was something different. It had been painted yellow well, and then roughly painted black. The 6 speed gearing had been replaced with 7 speed XT and the small GoD decal sat on the downtube. A subscriber commented saying I should make a Team Banana replica and even offered up some paint and decals so that's what I've done.
While the Team Banana is a road bike there is an urban myth that some Avanti's were painted in Banana colours for promotion.... maybe this is one that had the Team Banana treatment from GoD back in the day? - Развлечения
I love seeing somebody re-purposing old equipment and making the most out of old-tech. Most of the bike stuff from the 70s and 80s, especially from the big manufacturers (Shimano, Suntour, and Campag.) were of such a quality that they can be rebuilt and reused for decades. Just because you haven't got 12 gears and electronic shifting, doesn't mean you can't enjoy your cycling, if anything, to take an old bit of kit, cleaning and restoring it and making it work well, is an added element of enjoyment.
For sure. I get a tonne of enjoyment from rebuilding these bikes and love riding them all the same.
Cracking job, lots of time, patience and helpful suppliers. Great work on the paintwork, 2K really does give it that extra glossy finish.
Thanks! Sure does! I won’t be going back to normal clear now!
I luv the way a biopace spins
I love the whole bike in general 🙂
Best one yet. The paint and finish is stunning, plus I'm biased because the Avanti is a real dream bike from my childhood. And I've never seen one in Banana livery before, I reckon this one is priceless.
It’s definitely a special one now. I’d be really interested to know the full history of the bike. Wonder if Raleigh can use the serial number to pull up a spec sheet from the time it was built 🤔
Lost count of the amount of times I said to myself "that's gorgeous" watching that - fantastic from beginning to end!
Great work turned out stunning look forward to more....all the best Andy
Cheers Andy!
Best resto you've done so far. Stunning job.
Thanks! Appreciate it!
Your paintwork is getting really good, nicely done
Thanks! I feel like I’m learning fairly quick in the spraying department 😊
Maannn..I haven't seen one of the 'nana bikes for YEARS!.. great job.
love your attention to detail and the way you don't cut corners, perfection!
Thanks. I try! Not perfect thought I'm sure there are some things I've missed.
My Saracen back in the day had that very same Deore groupset with u brakes front and rear, 7 spd thumbies, etc, another nice build
Best build ever
As someone who has watched almost all the vids on this channel.... I would absolutely agree :)
Thanks chaps!
Great work as always, that's a very strange seatpost don't recall seeing one like that before.
It's a weird one, I don't know why you'd ever want that much adjustable setback. Especially when you can accomplish the same thing sliding the saddle along the rails
Thanks! The seat post is a SR MTE-100 I believe. LOTS of adjustment.
Yep, definitely your best ATB build and paint job to date. KUTGW.
Thanks!
I love this type of vintage/classic bike. Made so well , so strong, so well decorated. Great job. Thanks for the video.
Super build! Nicely done. You should be happy.
Thanks! Very happy with it.
Top job mate!
Thanks!
Awesome build. I love the colors and the whole paint scheme and story, really cool idea. Turned out awesome! Keep the builds coming.
Thanks!
Great build I just love this bike. It’s up there with the Marin you just finished. Your paint skills have definitely gotten better, your builds are most enjoyable to view. Cheers
Thanks 👍 Definitely learning and enjoying the painting experience!
Fabulous build.
Loved it. Great work
Thanks!
Another great piece of work. I enjoyed that video very much. Well done.
Glad you enjoyed it!
That is one of the nicest bikes I've seen! I've just bought an inferno myself to do up and ride around.
Thanks! I appreciate that! Good luck with your build.
Superb project, well done... as always !
Thanks!
Very good restoration. Well done !
Thanks!
Well done. Good man.
Thanks!
I love this quality of camera in natural light 😎
Good job again 🙂
Thanks! Bit of a pain shooting in natural light sometimes with harsh shadows and clouds drifting over but it does work well
Nice nice nice... greetings from Indonesia ✌️🤗
Thanks!
That was fantastic work, well done, i was particularly impressed by your method of overcoming the obstruction of slotting the sealed BB into the BB shell when the rivet is obstructing, i have managed to overcome this previously on my road bikes by precision milling the "locating collars" (for want of better word, not the actual threads) to create a grove to allow it to feed through as if jumping over, if you will, I would not have thought of that, mainly out of fear of damaging vintage italian frames, but, to tap a thread and use a bottle boss bolt to mount the plastic cable guide insert, respect man !! if i need to do so in the future i will remember that method because if need be ,you can repeat it by using bigger bolts, that was a "big learn" for me, NICE JOB!
Thanks!
Beautiful outcome,mate!
Thanks!
I always paint stuff the way it will be situated, that way you know you don't get problems where you can see them
Torvi has got one of the prettiest cat faces ever. I am going to try and get one of these frames eventually. always loved em'
She does 🥰 Good luck on the hunt. I think they’re fairly rare!
Great build ! colours are poppin...sweet build.....i built up a shogun mtb frame i found dumped and put bmx bars on it and 1 x 7 speed on narrow wide bars and its great ...im gonna keep an eye out for some raleighs !
Thanks! Plenty of Raleigh's around! Maybe not so much the older higher spec ones though!
Great job and a great show of determination to overcome challenges. Must hold the record for thread cutting. Blood on the head tube and the anguish of wheel cleaning. Monkeyshred Agonistes!
Blood on the head tube?? Definitely wasn’t from me.
Take a look in the video when you're attaching the headset to the head tube. Your hand smears something red on the tube. Paint? Looks a lot like . . . !
@@peterharrer3261 that’s grease 😂
I left a reply to that effect and the time stamp at 09:56, but it's missing now. Yes, the great mystery solved by Monkeyshred!
@@peterharrer3261 RUclips is being really weird with comments at the moment. Some I get notifications for. Most I don’t. Sometimes I get a notification, go to respond and the comment isn’t there. I believe all externals links are marked as spam and some get instantly deleted without me seeing them.
Cracking job, I tried to get the road bike from my local bike shop at the time but ended up with the black and gold Raleigh Record which was also decent.
This one came out great.
Thanks!
That looks bloody amazing! Great job, don't know if I'll ever have enough patience to be that thorough haha
Thanks! I've sort of got in to the mentality now where the more I do... I have to better the last build ha..
Looks smart
Thanks!
That’s a pretty bike! Huge amount of attention to detail man and heaps of little trick bits on it, it looks stunning!! I feel a little dirty, I’ve bought a new(ish) Giant mountain bike, but I’m pretty sure it’ll be sat aside once my Fisher Joshua arrives.
It is! I really want to finish it with the original bars but I’ve only found one set and they’re £100! Enjoy the new bikes!
@@MonkeyShred holy crap, 100 squids is a lotta money! I’m in a similar boat, though. I want a set of braced risers and they seem almost impossible to find apart from in England, and they’re £75 and post to Aus and I’m not gonna pay it until I’m certain that I can’t buy them elsewhere, and obviously once I buy one, 7 will turn up on eBay for $10. I picked up my Giant today, damn it’s a lot of bike for $150, and actually my first bike with discs, and my first hardtail too, and it’s got 24 gears or something nuts like that. I’ll be lost. I’m actually thinking of a project for my old bike, I really want some wing nuts but they’re really expensive, so I figured I’d make my own with some scrap steel and either weld the nut into whatever I use, or use another wheel nut or something like that. Do you have wing nuts on any in your collections?
just awsome!!!!
Thanks!
Love this bike...although I generally hate bright yellow. 😑 I have a '91 Raleigh Technium with a mishmash of early 90's parts (colorway: splattered steel blue w/bare anodized silver main tubes). Raleigh and Bridgestone are my 2 favorite bike makes. I'm always on the lookout for a Bridgestone in my size.
Thank you. There was a super bright yellow Raleigh Technium too. That one looks awesome too.
Beautiful!
Thanks!
Absolutely beautiful 😍❤. Looks amazing. One of the best I've seen you do. I work in Tamworth, so I'll keep an eye out for you out and about on it.lol.
Keep up the great work.
I think so too! The decals bud me a little but I think I’ll just order a couple of extra bands to fill in the gaps.
I’ve watched and really enjoyed a lot of your builds but I must say I think this one is my favourite what a fantastic job you’ve done with that Raleigh 👍👌 keep the great work going buddy 👍🚲
Thanks dude! Appreciate it!
Very good.
Thanks.
good job man, this was built in my hometown where i live. sadly an industry that has long gone along with carlton cycles.
There used to be sooooooooo many bike manufacturing businesses in the UK!
Gorgeous! I recently bought an Ozark, which is the same 531 frame but with a cro-moly unicrown fork and I am planning a rather special rebuild for it. Lots of food for thought here. :)
Thanks. Good luck with your build!
Great Color 👌👌👌
Thanks!
Awesome!
Thanks!
Hi Torvs! 🐈 Awesome video 👌. From 🇵🇭
Nice!
Thanks!
can you remember the size of the bottom bracket and head bearing? seeing your video, has inspired me to refurbish my Ozark! When i rebuilt my maverick, after stripping the paint, i went around the bike with krust, poured some down inside the tubes, done all the rust traps etc, was def better than factory finish, some guy bought it, only a few years back. hope its still going well. yep the following year, they moved the rear brakes and went to a unicrown fork.
For the BB using the MT60 crankset - I think it was a 68 x 122. That’s a pretty standard size for that crankset.
Headset was 1”.
I would love to see some 90s retro road bikes being fixed, especially non-Shimano gruppo.
I'm not too interested in roadies but I'll keep an eye out.
@@MonkeyShred I see your point, the old roads seem just heavy and more outdated than those versatile and robustly made MTBs. Perhaps you can find some nice steel CX bikes with canti brakes somewhere!
Excellent work!!! I sure hope any any of my project bikes turn out half as good as yours.
Maybe I could send you my bikes to finish, I do have a rare 1948 Hunber Sports with a 4 speed Archer hub with Raleigh ape hangers.
Thanks! Aha I’m trying to fly through all my builds so maybe in the future I can take on builds for others.
@@MonkeyShred shipping might be a bear from Arizona
@@joshuathompson2131 oh yes! That’d be a killer. I always am surprised these bikes turn up in the US! I expect them to be even rarer than they are here.
Give that man a banana 🍌, this looks sweet!
I don't actually like Banana's.... Banana flavour though. Love that.
Great build!! - how do you search the serial number?.
Thanks. There are various websites that explain how to decode Raleigh serial numbers.
Love that build. What did you do with that bike?
Nice job. How did you find working with the 2K aerosols?
You did a great job. Just one bit of advice, when your putting decals on or anything that requires freshly painted components to be laid on the bench put an old towel or soft sheet down first, there's nothing more annoying than accidently scratching your hard work.
I definitely didn’t find that out the hard way and had to add a touch more yellow....
Noticed Montana Gold spray cans for the base colors but a different brand of clearcoat (2k hardener). Would’ve done the same since the Montana Gold clearcoat is too soft when you clamp components down like a front derailleur. What brand of 2k did you use?
I believe it’s called SprayMax. I left everything to dry for a week before building to stop any soft clamping.
Good day. Hello from Ukraine. another series about the revival of a good bike. Cool bike 👍 I have a question, is this paint and varnish special, or cheap?
Thanks. The paint is Montana Gold acrylic. It is fairly cheap but good quality. The clear is an automotive 2K clear so it’s a bit tougher than normal clear. It’s expensive though.
Looks awesome! Did you wet sand between coats?
Thanks. No wet sanding but I did dry sand between both primer coats and between colours
Mate that is mint.....super nice build . Is it a keeper or are you selling it on ? mid week video of a canal tow path ride /drone footage..
Keeper! The weather is a bit shite at the moment and I want to take it somewhere a bit different so the ride video might be a bit delayed.
I painted a stem like you did and couldn't get it back in the forks, had to remove the paint
That was something that worried me! I’ve had the same experience before. I guess I was quite lucky with this!
There are more modern U brakes. Popularly called "the crud catcher". Wonder why it didn't take off in racing where on non-muddy rides it could have less drag(?).
Is that so? Like the mudguards, except, not as beneficial in mud 😂
Are you planning on getting a "proper" painting setup i.e. air compressor and gun?
Not any time soon. Maybe in the future if I can get the plans I want sorted.
can I attach a bike trailer to this?
531 thrap thrap thrapity thrap!
Do you sell these bikes?
Some! Not this one though. Not yet anyway.
Котейка =)
